1.0

Introduction

The construction industry is one of the most risky, dynamic and challenging field. Some of the risk is predictable while some of it is unpredictable (Mills, 2001). There are various ways in categorizing risk for different purpose. For example, there are internal and external risk while in more detailed categories of risk such as political risk, financial risk, market risk, intellectual property risk, social risk and safety risk ( Songer et al., 1997). Hastak and Shaked (2000) classified all risks specific to whole construction scenario into three broad levels, which are. country, market and project levels. Managing risk in construction is relevant to all professional and group in construction industry like client, design team, contractor, project management team and others. This is because risk management is concerned with time, cost and quality of the construction project. In Malaysian construction industry, risk management is one of the new management concepts. Risk management is a formal and orderly process of systematically identifying, analyzing, and responding to risks throughout the life-cycle of a project to obtain the optimum degree of risk elimination, mitigation and/or control (Flanagan and Norman, 1993). The main objective is to remove as much as possible the potential impact and to develop an organized framework (Perry and Haynes, 1985).

2.0 Problem Statement Nowadays, there are many of construction project in Malaysian construction industry. But, there are a lot of incidents and risk that can happen during the construction either predictable or unpredictable risk. The risk must be take as a serious problem especially in construction industry. This is because the risk that can occur in construction project is unforeseen. This is danger and can cause a serious problem to participants that involve in construction project. The absence of the correct ways in managing the risk can contributes to serious cases like injured. So, all of the risk need to be identified and manage so that the risk can be minimize and automatically increase the performance of the construction project.

3.0 Aim of Research The aim of this research is: 1. to identify the risk involve in construction project. 2. to analysis the management for risk in construction 3. to study on how the risk can affect the performance of the construction project. 4.0 Objectives The research is to achieve the following objectives: 1. to reduce the risk that can occur in the construction 2. to make sure all of the risk that can occur in the construction will be manage in a correct ways. 3. to increase the performance of construction project by minimizing the risk in construction. 5.0 Research Question 1. What are the types of risk that will occur in construction project and affect in performance of the construction project? 2. How to manage the risk that can cause failure or defect in construction project? 3. How all of the risk can affect the performance of construction project?

6.0 Scope of Research This research was carried out with a careful study based on cases study and data collected from questionnaires. The scope of this research will focus on the managing on the risk in construction industry. This research will be carried out on the construction industry in Malaysia. The respondent will be amongst participants in construction in Malaysia and the research will be carried on the 5 of construction project in Malaysia.

7.0 Research Methodology The study forms research methodology for this research consists of four steps which are:

Literature Review

Literature review was undertaken to get the general view of the investigation carried out by the author that are relevant to the research as well as to meet the objective which is to investigate about the risk management in construction project in Malaysia. Construction risk management in Malaysia.

100 of questionnaires was distributed to respondent that come from participants in construction industry.

Questionnaires

Interview was carried out among the participants in construction industry like contractor, project manager, subcontractor and others. All of the conversation during the interview was recorded.

Interview

Data Analysis

The process of categorizing, and recording the data. This involves determining consistent pattern and summarizing appropriate details revealed in the investigation. All the data was ranking using Likert scale and rating using Average Index.

8.1 Methods of Data Collection There are two types of data collected which is: 1. Primary data. 2. Secondary data. 8.1.1 Primary Data Collection Primary data is come from the original sources and specially collected to answer the question of the research. Primary data was gathered from literature review of the various types of journals on the risk management in construction. Besides, interview was held between students and participants of construction industry to ask about their knowledge and opinion on risk management in construction project. 8.1.2 Secondary Data Collection The secondary data are usually historical, already assembled and do not require access to respondents or subjects. In this research, the secondary data was collected through questionnaire survey. Some of the questionnaire was printed; some of it was fax and email to the respondents which is amongst the participants in construction project.

8.0 Data Analysis All the collected data from the questionnaires are analyzed in two steps or methods. These are frequency and average index. Frequency analysis is used as preliminary analysis. This method will show the frequency and the percentage. The frequency represented in the form of table and pie chart.
