Habits of mind to be developed by the students

Standards for Mathematical Practice

Expected to be embedded into ALL math instruction K-12

Standards for Mathematical Content ndards

Framework for the CCSS Math Standards

6-8
Number & Operations: real number system

Hallmark = learning pathways along which a student travels to be C&C ready, as well as embedded design feature of continually returning to prior learning at ever-increasing levels of complexity

9-12: 113 Standards organized into 6 Conceptual Categories, Domain, Cluster, and Standard 43 Advanced Math Standards (+) for students preparing for careers in STEM Conceptual categories, taken together, paint a portrait of what the math students must master in order to be C&C ready

1. Make sense of problems & persevere in solving them

k-5

Number & Operations: complex number system

E X T R E M E

Overarching Habits of Mind of a Productive Mathematical Thinker

6. Attend to precision
Number & Operations/Algebra: operations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals

Reasoning and Explaining

2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively

Algebra: linear functions

Algebra: non-linear functions

3. Construct viable arguments & critique the reasoning of others 4. Model with mathematics

Modeling and Using Tools

Data & Probability: measuring and analyzing data, measures of central tendency

Data & Probability: statistical computations, probability of independent events Geometry: perimeter/area of complex 2D shapes, surface area/ volume of most common basic 3D shapes, graphing systems of lines on coordinate plane, points on a line, comparing attributes of parallel and perpendicular lines

Data & Probability: complex statistical computations, probability of dependent events

Spotlight on developing understanding of core concepts & fluency with procedural skills
Written to assume mastery, in any given year, of the preceding years standards

5. Use appropriate tools strategically

and Generalizing

7. Look for and make use of structure Seeing Structure

Geometry: Attributes of 2D shapes (some 3D), perimeter/area of basic shapes, coordinate plane, points on a line, graphing

Geometry: perimeter/area of complex 3D shapes, expanded graphing, nonlinear 3D

8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

Bill McCallum, one author of the CCSS, paired the Practice Standards by common attributes his work is in lavender above

K-8 Standards organized by Grade, Domain, Cluster, Standard Domains = Larger groups of related standards 4 critical areas per grade level
CREATED BY DR. HOLLIE BECKER, K-12 CURRICULUM COORDINATOR Auburn-Washburn USD 437

Conceptual Categories = Over-arching ideas that describe strands of content for 9-12 Domains/Clusters = Groups of standards that describe coherent aspects of the content categories Standards = What students should know/be able to do

Clusters = Within domains, groups of related standards Standards = Within clusters, define what students should know/be able to do at each grade level
