Celebrating the Great Feast of the Corpus Christi

Scripture This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you (Exodus 24:8b) The cup of salvation I will take up, (Psalm 116:13) For this reason he is mediator of a new covenant (Hebrews 9:15) "Take it; this is my body." Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it. (Mark 14:22,23) Reflection What is the covenant of the Eucharist? How is Jesus the mediator between God and human? How do you model Jesus to those who do not believe? In consuming Jesus in the Eucharist do you become His mission? No matter how enlightened one may be by the light of the natural and acquired knowledge, he cannot enter into himself to delight within himself in the Lord (Ps. 36:4) unless Christ be his mediator, who says: I am the door. If anyone enters through me, he will be saved; (John 10:9) and he will go in and out and will find paradise. But we do not draw near to this door unless we believe in him, hope in him and love him. Therefore, if we wish to enter again into the enjoyment of Truth as paradise, we must enter through faith in, hope in and love of Jesus Christ, (1Tim. 2:5) the mediator of God and men, who is like the tree of life in the middle of paradise. Call to Conference!
Get ready for the MCCW Worldwide Conference to be held in St. Louis, Missouri October 4-8, 2012. The keynote speaker will be Mark Shea--a premier Catholic apologist, author, and speaker. We will gather at the beautiful Millennium Hotel, which is located in the heart of downtown St. Louis adjacent to the world-famous Gateway Arch and just one block from the Old Cathedral. Our parish is able to send ten women, so sign up now! We require a $100.00 refundable deposit. The deposit is refundable upon attendance. Any cancellations after registration has been sent are non refundable and the money will be deposited into the MCCW account. We are aiming at double occupancy $395 per person so please choose a roommate. We need a volunteer to be the organizer for this event. We have started a com- plete SEVEN YEAR audit of all of our sacramental records. We need your help to re-verify every Catholic Baptism, First Holy Communion, Confirmation and Marriage that took place here on post, whether in Good Shepherd Chapel or another facility on post, from 2005 up to 2012. It does not matter who performed the sacrament whether the Archbishop, Bishops, former priests, visiting priests or deacons. Provide us with four points of information: full name of the person who received the sacrament, which sacrament this person received, who performed the sacrament, and the date. What is The Great Feast of the Corpus Christi?

The Feast of Corpus Christi, or the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ (as it is often called today), goes back to the 13th century, but it celebrates something far older: the institution of the Sacrament of Holy Communion at the Last Supper. While Holy Thursday is also a celebration of this mystery, the solemn nature of Holy Week, and the focus on Christ's Passion on Good Friday, overshadows that aspect of Holy Thursday. In 1246, Bishop Robert de Thorete of the Belgina diocese of Lige, at the suggestion of St. Juliana of Mont Cornillon (also in Belgium), convened a synod and instituted the celebration of the feast. From Lige, the celebration began to spread, and, on September 8, 1264, Pope Urban IV issued the papal bull "Transiturus," which established the Feast of Corpus Christi as a universal feast of the Church, to be celebrated on the Thursday following Trinity Sunday. At the request of Pope Urban IV, St. Thomas Aquinas composed the office (the official prayers of the Church) for the feast. This office is widely considered one of the most beautiful in the traditional Roman Breviary (the official prayer book of the Divine Office or Liturgy of the Hours), and it is the source of the famous Eucharistic hymns "Pange Lingua Gloriosi" and "Tantum Ergo Sacramentum." For centuries after the celebration was extended to the universal Church, the feast was also celebrated with a Eucharistic procession, in which the Sacred Host was carried throughout the town, accompanied by hymns and litanies. The faithful would venerate the Body of Christ as the procession passed by. In recent years, this practice has almost disappeared, though some parishes still hold a brief procession around the outside of the parish church. While the Feast of Corpus Christi is one of the ten Holy Days of Obligation in the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church, in some countries, including the United States, the feast has been transferred to the following Sunday. The weekend is centered around Jesus Christ, present in the Eucharist at Mass and in adoration, and his Holy Spirit, speaking through God's Word in Scripture and the magisterial teaching of the Church to bring the life and love of the Father to every human heart. Pastoral Visitations
There is simply no place more appropriate than the home for pastors to interact with their parishioners in a personal manner. And this holds true whether such interaction is for the purpose of leading a person to Christ, reclaiming a lost soul, or offering support and guidance. For this reason, our Pastor, Father Joseph would like to start Pastoral Visitations to give parishioners the opportunity of meeting and knowing him. He would like to visit parishioners homes twice a week, so if you are interested in receiving the special visit of our Pastor, please contact the PLC Lola Rivera to schedule a Pastoral visitation @ (706) 791-2945, or plc@saintmichaelparishfg.org. Father Joseph is looking forward to visit your home, talk and pray with you and your family in earnestness and humility.

Confessions
Private confessions at St. Michaels are available for you before Mass on Saturdays 4pm and Sundays at 8am in the confessional box located in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, but also face-to-face and by appointment at your convenience. Confessions are available in Spanish when Father Joseph celebrates mass.

Matrimony
Arrangements for marriage preparation should be made at least six months in advance of the proposed date. If there has been a prior marriage that has not been annulled by the Catholic Church, more time may be required. Participation in a marriage preparation workshop/program is required. Initially, all requests of information should be directed to the Catholic Pastor at (267) 243-5861.

In order to receive Baptism, parent(s) must be registered and attending Mass. Dates and times of Baptism can ONLY be set after registering for Pre-Baptism class, and talking with a Priest. Adoration on Wednesday
Join us for adoration this coming Wednesday at 6:30pm. We meet every week to spend and dedicate an hour in Eucharistic Adoration. This is a great way to increase your faith and help you with your prayer life.

Joy is not the same as happiness. Happiness can be attained with a newly acquired object, a car, or clothing or appliance, for example. A sunny day can make someone happy, or a bouquet of flowers. Usually happiness is a result of something external. But joy is internal. It is not an emotion, but an inner appreciation and sense of satisfaction due to a spiritual reality. For every Christian, the number one desire should be to experience joy even in the face of negative circumstances. In Hebrews chapter 12, believers who are tempted to become weary or discouraged. They are urged to recall examples of faith demonstrated by God's people who preceded them, taking into consideration all they endured and especially remembering Jesus Christ. "let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." Jesus believed God's promise in Psalm 16:10: "For You will not leave my soul in Sheol (the grave), nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption." Jesus believed God would raise Him from death, and ultimately fulfill the remaining future prophecies concerning Him. He knew that his sacrifice would pave the way for the nations to come to God. Therefore Jesus could have joy inside. He did not focus on the immediate circumstances, he looked to the future, even while suffering an agonizing death on the cross. Paul brought the Word of God to Thessalonica. Some people gladly received the Word, but as Acts chapter 17 reveals, there was a group of legalistic Jews who were hostile. The resistance intensified to the point that the entire city was rioting and out of control. The situation was so tense that Paul and Silas had to leave in the middle of the night. Later, Paul sent Timothy to check on the believers and was joyful to hear Timothy's positive report of their steadfastness. For what thanks can we render to God for you, for all the joy with which we rejoice for your sake before our God. (1 Thessalonians 3:9) Even in the midst of chaos and opposition, the believers were joyful. And you became followers of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit. (1 Thessalonians 1:6) Rather than external things being the cause of joy, the Bible shows that spiritual realities produce joy in a believer. In Psalm 16:11, the Psalmist writes, "In Your presence is fullness of joy." Being aware of God's presence in every situation produces joy. On the night of Jesus' arrest, at the last meal he shared with His disciples. Jesus taught them to retain the Word of truth, and then said His joy would remain in them, and they would experience fullness of joy (John 15:11). He also comforted them: "You now have sorrow; but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you." (John 16:22) Retrieved from http://www.sharefaith.com

Vacation Bible School News

Registration for Vacation Bible School is open now for children from Age 4 thru 5th Grade (rising to 6th). You may get a registration form from our parish or by visiting the Religious Education Center located in Building 39709, 39th Street near 7th Avenue.

POSITION DESCRIPTION (THIS IS A VOLUNTEER POSITION.) The Special Events Coordinator will oversee all aspects of events based on food service for approximately 4-8 events a year, including our annual event St. Michaels Day. QUALIFICATIONS Good communication skills. Enjoy working with a variety of people. Ability to organize volunteers for decoration and food preparation. Good with details. Enjoy being a host/hostess at events. Ability to adjust plans and redirect volunteers under pressure. GIFTS PREFERRED: Helps and Hospitality; Administration is a plus. RESPONSIBILITIES: Organize the preparation and serving of meals, and fellowship for the Membership class 3-4 times each year. These events are held on weekends. Oversee the preparation and serving of food at 3-4 visitor receptions each year. The planning for these events is done with the Parish Life Coordinator, and might be approved by the Pastor and Parish Council. Confirm date of event and time with the Parish Council. Plan meal and decoration within given budget and under Parish Council approval. Recruit additional volunteers. The Special Events Coordinator is required to brief the Parish Council. Questions? The Vocation of a Chaplain

Priestly ministry to those serving in the military is a unique and special vocation. The Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA is the largest geographical diocese in the country, and, within its bounds, those called to serve as chaplains must be prepared to undertake ministries as diverse as the regions they visit. As a sacramental minister, the chaplain must bring Christ and the healing power of the Church to men and women serving in an endless range of stressful, dangerous and possible deadly circumstances. He must be prepared to transfer from parish ministry to ministry in a war zone at a moment's notice, and act as comforter to soldiers and their families in a way few others will ever experience. Providing for the spiritual and sacramental needs of men and women in uniform is an essential task, and priest chaplains are in higher demand now than ever before. Christ needs men to answer the call to the chaplaincy for the good of the Church, the country and the world.

Snow White & the Huntsman

NEW YORK (CNS) -- The "Fairest One of All" morphs into a butt-kicking warrior princess in "Snow White and the Huntsman," the latest and darkest take yet on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale first published 200 years ago. In a sharp contrast to spring's campy comedy "Mirror Mirror," first-time director Rupert Sanders colors the classic good-vs.-evil fable with splashes of gothic horror and extreme violence, which make this rather grim (no pun intended) film unsuitable for young children. The battle scenes in this action-adventure would not look out of place in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy -nor would the religious imagery, unusual for a Hollywood blockbuster. This time around, instead of Julia Roberts we have Charlize Theron who chews up the scenery as the wicked Queen Ravenna. A master of sorcery who commands a phantom army, she seduces and marries King Magnus, then slays him and takes his throne, forcing his happy kingdom into painful submission. "When one stays beautiful forever, the world is hers," the Queen screams. To preserve her loveliness -- and power -- she relies on a series of gruesome beauty treatments, including a milk bath and a diet of dead birds and sweet maidens, who literally have the life sucked out of them. It's only a matter of time before that Magic Mirror warns the Queen of someone fairer, her stepdaughter Snow White, imprisoned in the tower. Her innocence and purity will destroy you," the Mirror promises. To ensure her immortality, the Queen must kill Snow White and consume her heart. Not so fast. Snow White fervently prays the Our Father as she awaits her chance to escape. It comes, and with the help of a conveniently appearing white horse, she flees to the forest. "After her!" the Queen commands the big lug of a Huntsman, Eric. He complies, only to later take pity on the fugitive and spare her life. Along the way, they run into the dwarfs, all eight of them, headed by Beith. Intriguingly, they are played by men who are not vertically challenged in real life, but transformed by movie magic. They live in the Sanctuary, an enchanted part of the forest filled with fairies and magical creatures. Skilled as gold miners, the dwarfs possess a special gift: They can see light in the darkness. In Snow White they see light, a kind of messiah, a point confirmed by the appearance of the White Hart, an albino stag that kneels before her and offers his "blessing." In the end, "Snow White and the Huntsman" is an entertaining romp with a strong sense of right and wrong. Parents should be warned that the film's dark tone and excessive bloodshed could be nightmare-inducing for the younger set. Who Is Eligible?
Any young man with a college degree who shows signs of having a vocation to priestly ministry and can meet the academic requirements for seminary training and the qualification for military service is eligible to apply. Though a sizable portion of those who pursue a vocation as a military chaplain come from prior military service or a military background, no experience with the military whatsoever is required.

RE SPOTLIGHT NEWS
Catechists Needed Upcoming Training
RE will have a Teachers Training on May 19 from 9-3pm in Bldg 13 for current and prospective teachers teaching CCD next year. The training will provide you with teaching techniques, and information on teachers certification, and other important information to make your teaching experience a successful one!.
