Staff Performance Evaluations are Due March 31

Performance Evaluations are the most rewarding part of my job! I avoid doing evaluations like the plague! Which one sounds more like you? Performance management is a continual process which provides the opportunity for communication between supervisor and employee. Performance evaluation forms are just one piece of this very important process. Careful consideration should be taken when completing evaluations to ensure that they are completed honestly and accurately. There are many common mistakes when completing evaluations. Some examples are as follows: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) Completing evaluations late (or not at all) leaving the employee feeling unimportant. Rating performance as better than it actually is as a means to motivate the employee or in order to avoid a difficult conversation. Rating based upon recent performance rather than including the entire year. Dredging up issues from a previous performance cycle which have already been corrected. Not taking the time to sit down and meet with the employee to discuss the evaluation. Lack of follow-up on mentioned performance gaps or goals. Only discussing performance once per year when evaluations are due.

Try to avoid these mistakes or they may come back to haunt you later! This year the evaluations will be due to Human Resources on March 31 st (that is one month earlier than usual). I want to encourage you to contact Rich Pernell, Andrea Hooper or Brandon Young if you have questions about the process or for suggestions on how to make this as productive and effective as possible. One point we want to emphasize is that the entire process should be a continual conversation about performance and employee development. Employee development will be a point of focus for HR in the coming months so dont be surprised if you hear from us soon on this topic!

Workforce Planning and HiringPhase 3 of the Hiring Process

Now that you have completed your inspection of need and completed the VCR (Vacancy Creation Request), it is time to begin working with your assigned recruiter to decide where to publish the vacancy. Many times placement on the ERAU job site (www.erau.edu/jobs) will generate the necessary application pool. There are many options which you can evaluate when advertising your vacancy, but job seekers today look to the web. Web posts can be much quicker and can be more cost effective to the University. One of the BIGGEST advantages to web postings is the timeliness. These usually can be posted within a 24 hour time period and be viewable for 30, 60 and even 90 days. Whereas a print publication typically has a 30 day deadline that must be met and the issue will not be circulated for an additional 30 days. One additional place we can post positions is within the social media environment. Human Resources has Facebook and LinkedIn pages. Often, we will post vacancies on these sites and can do so upon request at any time. Currently we are tracking placements with online and print advertisements. We are asking each candidate Where did you hear about this opportunity? during the application process. As a result of this tracking, we will be able to provide the hiring manager with the most cost conscious, effective way to advertise for the type of vacancy available. For some vacancies, print advertisements may still be required. In these instances, we will work with the Marketing Department to design and display the essentials of the vacancy. As always, you will be able to preview this ad prior to publication.
