Measurement of The Local Acceleration of Gravity (g) by Inclined Plane

I.

Purpose of Experiment 1. Determining the local acceleration of gravity(g) by inclined planed. 2. Comparing the value of the local acceleration of gravity(g) obtained by using two different size marbles. 3. Comparing the value of the local acceleration of gravity(g) obtained by the previous experiment (simple pendulum) with the result of these experiment.

II.

Tools and Materials 1. Inclined plane 2. Stop-watch or Timer counter 3. Ruler 4. Two marbles in different size

Fundamental Theory An object placed on a tilted surface will often slide down the surface. The rate at which the object slides down the surface is dependent upon how tilted the surface is; the greater the tilt of the surface, the faster the rate at which the object will slide down it. In physics, a tilted surface is called an inclined plane. Objects are known to accelerate down inclined planes because of an unbalanced force. When a solid ball placed on the top of the inclined plane, there will be two types of motion that occurs on the ball, the translational motion and rotational motion. To understand this type of these two motions, it is important to analyze the forces acting upon the solid ball placed on an inclined plane (in this experiment, we use two marbles in different size).

Determining the Equation of Local Acceleration of gravity(g)

Where: g = the local acceleration of gravityin 2 L = the length of inclined plane in meter h = the high of inclined plane in meter t = the time needed for marble to move as far as L, in second These last equation helps us to find the value of local acceleration of gravityby inclined plane.
