8.2.3 Venue option Learners have a choice of two options as to where they want to attend the practicum. OPTION 1: THE PREFERRED OPTIONS
VAAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY Gauteng, Limpopo & Mpumalanga DURBAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY KZN and Surroundings CAPE PENISULA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY Western Cape WALTER SISULU UNIVERSITY - Eastern Cape & Surroundings CENTRAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY - Free State & Surroundings UNIVERSITY OF JOHANNESBURG-Gauteng 8.3 Submission of the practical reports OPTION 1: THE PREFERRED OPTION
On completion of the practicum, the practicum report must be submitted to the lecturer or laboratory assistant at the Institution where the Practical was done. The Institution will forward all assessed practicums to UNISA.
FMA3PRA/101/0/2012
OPTION 2:
ALTERNATIVE INSTITUTION On completion of the practicum, the practicum report must be submitted to the manager or laboratory assistant for assessment. After the practicum has been marked the marked script must be send back to UNISA. It is very important to consider the following points: No late submissions will be accepted. You must submit your report three weeks after doing your practical. Keep a clear copy of the project for your own reference. This is important, as projects do get lost. Submissions of assignments must be in accordance to the services and procedures handy guide. It is your responsibility to check whether UNISA has received your project by contacting the call centre.

DETAILS OF LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS The Fluid Mechanics III (Practical) course consists of a number of prescribed experiments. These laboratory experiments are the same as those prescribed by the Vaal Triangle Technikon as part of their syllabus. The following experiments have to be carried out : Experiment 1 : Observe laminar, transitional and turbulent pipe flow. Experiment 2 : Investigate the reaction forces produced by the change in momentum of a fluid flow. Experiment 3 : Determine the coefficient of velocity of two small orifices. Experiment 4 : Determine the coefficient of discharge, velocity and contraction of a small orifice. Experiment 5 : Investigate the head loss due to friction in the flow of water through a pipe and determine the associated friction factor. There are three options of carrying out the laboratory experiments for this course : Option : We arrange a laboratory session on your behalf at a particular technikon. These sessions will normally take place during that technikons recess, usually during June/July and November/December. Details about when and where these sessions will take place will be sent to you in advance. Option 2: You can arrange to carry out these experiments at the technikon or other tertiary institution of your choice.
10
FMA3PRA/101/0/2012 In either case above, it is accepted that the experiments you will carry out will be those prescribed by that particular institution and may vary slightly from the ones given above. Option 3: If your employer has the applicable laboratory equipment to carry out the above experiments, you may elect to carry out these experiments at your workplace. In this case , the experiments given above have to be adhered to and further details about the experimental procedures to be followed can be supplied us. Whatever option you decide upon, you are requested to fill in the attached relevant registration form in which you make your particular selection. This is important for us to have a record of where you intend carrying out these experiments. In addition, it will help us in the planning of these laboratory sessions if you elect to do them through us.
