FOREWORD
1) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matt ers, prepared by Technical Commit tees on which all the National
Commit tees having a special interest therein are represented, express, as nearl y as possible, an international consensus of opinion on
the subjects dealt wit h.
2) They have the form of recommendati ons for internati onal use and they are accepted by the Nati onal Committ ees in that sense.
3) In order to promote international unifi cati on, the IEC expresses the wish that all Nati onal Commit tees should adopt the text of the IEC

recommendati on for their nati onal rules in so far as national condit ions wil l permit . Any divergence between the IEC recommendati on
and the corresponding nati onal rules should, as far as possible, be clearly indicated in the latt er.
PREFACE
This chapter is a part of the seri es of chapters of the Internati onal Electrotechnical Vocabulary (I .E.V.) devoted to general scientif ic
and technical concepts (Class 1 of the new classif ication) and which consti tutes the revised version of Group 05: Fundamental Defi niti ons
(publi shed in 1956) of the second editi on of the I.E.V.
It has been prepared by Working Group 101 of Technical Commit tee No. 1: Terminology.
The fi rst two draft s of this chapter, Documents 1(05)(Secretari at)1056 and 1061 were submitt ed to Nati onal Commit tees and their
comments were discussed at the enlarged Working Group 101 meeting at Leysin in September 1973.
As a result of this meeting, a new draft Document 1 (I.E.V. 101)(Centr al Off ice)1047 was prepared by the Working Group and submit ted
to Nati onal Committ ees for approval under the Six Months’ Rule in October 1974.
