COMMUNICATIONS & MEDIA ASSISTANT (GS-5)


Description of functions Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Deputy Representative and the overall guidance of the Representative, the Communications & Media Assistants main tasks and responsibilities are to promote Office activities with a human rights approach; maintain contact with the Media and all communications related activities. Responsibilities: the Communications & Media Assistant will be responsible for the following duties: a) Communications and Promotion of Human Rights Contribute to increasing the visibility of the Offices mandate among different actors such as the media, civil society and general public. Assure the continuity of the social network strategy as a tool for the promotion and dissemination of human rights. Participate in the planning and coordination of major events, liaise with relevant departments/agencies, and other UN Offices. Coordinate on daily basis to compile a report with the relevant news on human rights matters as a tool for monitoring and following up on HR issues in the country. Produce communication and promotion materials. Manage and update mailing lists, databases and other materials related to communications matters. Maintain, update and edit OHCHR Mexico web site content as needed. Ensure institutional memory by producing digital materials and photos of relevant Office events and assure their promotion and publication on the Office website and others outlets. Coordinate the design and printing process of promotional materials and publications Elaborate, produce and guarantee that Office publications, promotion and image materials are appropriate and according to UN standards, rules and regulations. b) Contact with the media Provide the office with general support on media and promotion matters. Deal with the media and respond to their technical and informational needs for interviews, press conferences and other public events. Coordinate media coverage of important events; liaise with news and publications agencies, public relations firms and others. Assist in drafting and editing reports, production schedules, press releases, correspondence and other related texts. Assure the compliance with the rules and regulations established by headquarters related to communications.

c) Other related tasks Manage logs, control stocks and distribute Offices publications. Posting documents on the UN web. Elaborate and monitor the Communications Units annual work /cost plan. Carry out administrative tasks related to the Communications Units expected accomplishments. Perform other duties as required. Undertake other related tasks necessary for the completion of the objectives and the general mandate of the OHCHR-Mexico. Competencies Professionalism - Good knowledge in promotion, journalism, mass media, press-related procedures, production and dissemination of public information; ability to research and gather information from a variety of sources. Planning and organizing Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to establish priorities and to coordinate and monitor related activities; identifies priority activities and assignments; adjust priorities as required; uses time efficiently. Communication Proficient communication (spoken and written) skills, including ability to draft and edit a variety of correspondence and other communications in Spanish and English; demonstrated public relations skills. Creativity - Ability to assist in the design, creation and delivery of new and effective promotion materials, communications products and services. Technology awareness Fully proficient computer skills and use of relevant software and other applications, e.g. design softwares, power point or equivalent, internal databases, Internet, etc. _____________________________________________________________________________________ QUALIFICATIONS Education Complete secondary education, high school education diploma or equivalent. Specific training in journalism, communications or related areas will be an asset. Work Experience At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in a public information, media or communications environment. Demonstrated capacity in designing and conducting public-awareness media oriented campaigns. Previous experience with United Nations or an international organization will be an advantage Languages Fluency in Spanish and working knowledge of English, both written and spoken. Other desirable skills Ability to work in a multicultural and multiethnic environment.
