Cemetery Decoration Day:

The annual cemetery decoration day is the second Saturday in August. This year, the decoration day falls on August 13. The business meeting of the McMahan Cemetery Trust Fund will begin at 10 a.m. We had one of the best business meeting turn outs last year that weve had in several years. Come join us for the decoration day and business meeting at 10 a.m.

Cemetery Improvements:
Over the past year, weve made a few noticable improvements to the cemetery. The large oak tree inside the cemetery was removed and the stump ground down. The back corner of the cemetery had grown up with bushes, briars, and weeds. That corner has been cleaned out and plots for additional graves are now designated on the cemetery map in that corner. The fence was replaced on the back side of the cemetery with a new woven wire fence. A special THANK YOU to Paul Smith who spent many long, hot days cleaning out the fence rows on the back side of the cemetery to get it ready for the new fence. The hard work put in by Paul and the new fence are certainly a noticeable improvement to the cemetery.

Daughter of Jo Ann (Smith) Seiner and granddaughter of Joe and Isolene (Duke) Smith. Kimberly A. (Duke) Serna -- b. January 13, 1982, d. January 29, 2011. Daughter of Ricky and Betty (Wilson) Duke. James Lane -- b. December 13, 1935, d. June 20, 2011. Son of Harry and Minnie (Lorance) Lane.

Cemetery Directory:
Over the past year, several individuals have provided information to develop the first edition of the McMahan Cemetery Directory. The directory contains information about each person buried in the cemetery including plot number, name, maiden name, date of birth, date of death, spouse, parents, children, and any siblings who are also buried at McMahan. In addition to documenting information about each person buried in the cemetery, it also provides some often little-known information about relationships of families in the McMahan, Geedville, and Ivy Bluff communities, as well as family connections beyond our communities. We plan to have a copy of this directory for each family in attendance at the business meeting on August 13. A new directory will be developed each year containing updates to the previous edition. Cemetery Plot Map:

Over the years, graves have not always been placed in straight lines as was laid out in the original cemetery plot map drawn up by Harry Lee Smith. As a result, in some cases, there is now not enough room to continue a row between the adjacent rows as shown on the original map. In conjuction with developing the cemetery directory, the original map has been remeasured, renumbered, and adjusted to develop a new map that accounts for those spots where there is not enough room for the rows as designated on the original map. The modified cemetery map will be available for review at the business meeting on decoration day. Please note that none of the changes to the map affect the location of plots that have been reserved.

Burial Plot Fee Change:

The membership voted last year to charge a $200 burial plot fee per plot if the individual does not have a certificate or has not contributed at least $200 to the McMahan Cemetery Trust Fund over the years. This change in burial plot fee does not apply to plots that were already reserved at the time of the fee change vote.
