I think it s easier if we talk about the second question rst...

the reason we need faculty development is because we have a problem.

We are expected to be all these things and this can be too much... it can be overwhelming!

In the past, people made the assumption that... when you nished your medical training that you were able to teach...

but we know this isn t true. There are very smart and skilled physicians who cannot teach.

So when this assumption was challenged in the 70 s, they started doing studies and found those who learned how to teach made signicantly *better teachers as rated by their students and peers... and had *more successful students seen in better scores and performance. Who wants to be a better teacher - effective & respected? Who wants students to like them and learn well from them?

So this sounds great - more respect as teachers, skilled students... so what is faculty development... it sounds really hard!

Behavioral - learning was dened as changing behavior - objectives, drills, practice, feedback Cognitive - developing practical knowledge and reasoning skills, problem-based learning Social - changing values, learning culture, developing the right learning environment But I think learning this is... headache. So I think the key to faculty development is...

I want to introduce you to the red string principle. There were a lot of things for me to learn when I came to Cambodia. Some things were very different and it was easy for me to see this and ask about it. But sometimes many times I just missed things because they either seemed small or insignicant, or my eyes just werent looking for it. And this is true for those little red strings

Then one day, a Khmer friend pointed out these red strings. He explained they were for good luck and protection and Khmer use them to protect everything. Huh I dont think I ever saw those before. I asked if it was common yes, VERY common. But I asked if its so common, how come I havent seen it before?

And then as I left, I began to see a red string, and another and another and they were EVERYWHERE! On peoples wrists, on the van side mirror I took into town, doorknobs and most motorcycles!

So what does this mean this red string principle. When we actually name or identify something, we!

So what are the red strings or gorillas(moonwalking bears) we ll discuss?

Think about this scenario... in your own minds, think about what the problem is...

Pause... in your own minds, think about what the problem is...

These are examples of poor teaching because the situation was not understood. Good teaching recognizes the situation - and teaching is leadership The volunteer would have greatly helped the junior doctor, yes?

Every organization has a culture - the way we do things, the words we use, our values and expectations and assumptions...

How to help junior doctors think through management better

I know that people love to play with power point, but... Not just how you present it, but also how you organize your thoughts.
