Thanks to the swell of baby boomers who entered their prime teeing-up years, master-planned golf communities emerged in cities all over the country including Mesa. Apache Wells, tucked away from mainstream traffic in the East Valley, is one example. generally, its 18-hole, par-71 golf course is restricted to residents, but from April to September, the public is welcome to play here, and the rates are extremely affordable.
Apache Wells Country Club is a memberowned golf club, controlled by the members and not an outside management company, said Linda Smith, the executive administrator and marketing director. In the 80s, the homeowners of Apache Wells, a retirement community, were discontented with the direction the golf course was heading in, so they purchased it. Today, the Apache Wells Country Club is run by a volunteer board of directors elected from their membership, along with a business administrator, golf professionals and a grounds superintendent. There is an everpresent spirit of closeness and community. Established in 1962 and built near historic Falcon Field Airport, the golf course was designed so that its lush fairways would be lined by homesites. Architect Jack Snyder crafted a pleasurable layoutone that is highly accessible to senior golfers. On-site clinics are provided for members and guests by our golf professionals. Areas of instruction include putting, drives, pitching and sand traps, said Smith. The golf course is mostly levelhowever, several holes have surprisingly tough challenges. Perfect for mid-skilled players, the course at Apache Wells Country Club boasts three tee boxes per hole. Stretching for 6,038 yards from the blue tees, the average round takes just over four hours to play. Water can be found on six holesincluding the courses signature par3 fourth hole, dubbed the Apache Warrior because of the Indian sculpture placed on an island there. Golfers will enjoy the desert surroundings and the sweeping views of Red Mountain contrasted by Mesas blue skies. Apache Wells Country Club hosts several events that attract players from across the U.S., like Alice Coopers Blood Bath tournament and the semiannual Snowbird Scramble. Hungry golfers can have a meal at the full-service bar and grill in the clubhouse. There is a pro shop with a wide range of apparel and equipment, as well as a driving range with 50 grass hitting stations. Apache Wells Country Club is located at 5601 E.
