from McClymonds High School with youth from Hoover Elementary School who are experiencing personal, academic, and behavioral difficulties. Youth from the Alameda County Probation Department Weekend Training Academy (WETA) also researched their genealogy and participated in the project. The high school youth were trained by the African American Genealogical Society of Northern California to use genealogical search tools during visits to the Family History Center at the Mormon Temple in Oakland. Many traced their ancestors back into the 1800s through census, birth and death records. Some have also learned about their ancestry through DNA testing provided by 23andme.com They have also forged new bonds. Says youth participant Dontarion Layne, this project helped me talk to and build relationships with family members I didnt even know. The last time I talked to my Nana, I was five years old, Khristan Antoine said. I was nervous to call her and ask her [about our family], but it built a strong relationship between me and her. Now I can call her and basically ask her about anything. Asked if the experience of researching her family history changed her, Kailah Johnson-Black responded, I am still the same person I was before the project. But now I know more about my family and I had fun discovering all of the places they had lived in the United States.
