Exercise 4: Multicomponent absorption Stripping with efficiency

Assignment date: Due date:

Assignment 1: Kremser equation for multicomponent absorption 75% of Propane (the so-called key component k = 2) of a gas stream (G = 1 kmol/min) with the here below given composition should be absorbed using oil. It is assumed that the oil stream is pure. 1. Which is the minimum amount of oil (Lmin) to be used? 2. How many theoretical stages are needed when L=1.2 Lmin? 3. Which is the composition of the gas stream going out of the absorber? Data: Components 0 1 2 3 CH4 C2H6 C3H8 C4H10 yin carrier gas 0.05 0.04 0.02 K- values 19.3 4.7 1.4

Equilibrium correlation:

Assignment 2: Multicomponent absorption A gas mixture contain 88 Mol-% Methane (1, carrier gas), 5 Mol-% Ethane (2), 5 Mol-% Propane (3), und 2 Mol-% n-Butane (4). The gas mixture is treated at 37C and 34 bar in an already existing absorption column with 8 theoretical stages. The oil stream used to purify the gas mixture is assumed pure. Under these conditions the methane is not absorbed since it is the carrier gas. The Henrys constant for the other components are: H1 = , H2 = 47 bar, H3 = 17 bar, H4 = 6 bar.

a) How many moles of solvent must be used per gas mole, when 95% of the Propane must be absorbed?

Pure oil (solvent)

p = 34 bar T = 37 C

5% Ethane 5% Propane 2% n-Butane

b) Which is the composition of the treated gas and liquid stream? Tipps: The numerical solution for the equation

x9 x = 0.95 is x=1.19. x9 1

Assignment 3: Stripping Propane must be stripped from a oil stream in a stripping column by using pure steam. The pure oil stream (without Propane) has a flow-rate of L = 150 kmol/h and is loaded with 2.5 Mol-% Propane. The column is set at the temperature of 350 K and pressure of 1.2 atm. The minimum Propane amount to be separated is 90%. a) Calculate the minimum amount of gas stream Gmin and list the assumptions you are making. b) Calculate the number of theoretical separation stages, when the gas stream is 5/3 * Gmin. c) Calculate the composition of the inlet and outlet stream, as well as the composition of the liquid and gas stream for all the stages considering an integer number of separation stages. d) Repeat the calculation of point c) considering that the stages have a MurphreeEfficiency of 40%. Use the following Antoines equation for the vapor pressure of Propane:
