The Welsh Revival: Points to Consider The Welsh revival brought about a tremendous spiritual awakening.

From late 1904 until early 1905, the Holy Spirit's outpouring in Wales directly impacted 100,000 people and yielded inspiration for countless millions. Few revivals have been so well documented and thoroughly considered as the Welsh Revival. An entire region came under the influence of God's Spirit, transforming it virtually overnight. The Welsh revival was not a emotional overloading of a religious community, but a "mighty outpouring of religious fervor, bringing a whole nation to its knees at the foot of the cross in adoration and praise. Everything sprang into new life." (David Matthews) A young Welshman named Evan Roberts was awakened in 1904 and he then prayed to God all night. The Lord's Spirit then communicated to Roberts that he was to be the preacher of a revival. The Welsh revival followed. He said, "This movement is not of me, it is of God. I would not dare direct it...It is the Spirit alone which is leading us." Evan Roberts (1878-1951) was the person most recognized in the Welsh Revival. He came from a humble, religious family. As a child, the devout lad took a Bible with him everywhere. Early in his life, he dreamed of revival. While a young coal miner a page in the Bible burned in his heart, the page is 2 Chronicles 6 where Solomon prayed for revival. Do you long to see God move like that in our day? If so, remember there is never great, widespread revival without personal revival. If you seek a personal, deep, Spirit-led movement of God in your life, then consider these aspects of personal revival taught by Evan Roberts. These are known as the Four Points: 1) You must put away any unconfessed sin. 2) You must put away any doubtful habit. 3) You must obey the Holy Spirit promptly. 4) You must confess Jesus Christ publicly. May God raise up a generation of people with this type of passion. Revivals start with personal prayer and obedience to the word of God, this includes addressing Acts 2:38 and applying it to our lives. Before the Holy Spirit fire fell upon Azusa Street movement, they had been praying for many months for victory. They earnestly tarried in prayer asking the Lord for a mighty outpouring of His Spirit. They were not disappointed. Jesus showed Himself alive again to many. Fervent Finney describes a man who prayed, As if he would do violence to Heaven, and then have seen the blessing come as plainly in answer to his prayer as if it were revealed, so that no person would doubt it any more than if God had spoken from heaven. Prevailing, or effectual prayer, is that prayer which obtains the blessing that it seeks. It is that prayer which effectually moves God. The very idea of effectual prayer is, that it effects its object. When I read my Bible, I learned what Christ had said in regard to prayer, and answers to prayer. He had said, 'Ask, and ye shall receive, seek and ye shall find, knock and it shall he opened unto you. For everyone that asketh receiveth, and he that seeketh findeth, and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.'" (Charles Finney 1792-1875)

Such prayer was a key to the great success of the early Salvation Army. The Booths, the Armys founders, both prayed earnestly. Prayer is agony of soul, a wrestling of the spirit. You know how men and women deal with one another when they are in desperate earnestness for something to be done. That is prayer, whether it be to man or to God; and when you get your heart influenced and melted and wrought up and burdened by the Holy Ghost for souls, you will have power." "One must pray with all their might. That does not mean saying your prayers, or sitting gazing about in church or chapel with eyes wide open, while someone else says them for you. It means fervent, effectual, untiring wrestling with God. It means that grappling with Omnipotence, that clinging to Him, following Him about, so to speak, day and night, as the widow did the unjust judge, with agonizing pleadings and arguments and entreaties, until the answer comes and the end is gained." (Catherine Booth, co-founder of the Salvation Army) Frank Bartleman of Azusa Street fame said this of prayer. "While praying in my room one evening, just before going to preach suddenly the very atmosphere of the room changed. Everything became unnatural, it was like heaven, a change of worlds. The whole atmosphere became supernatural. Seeking and needy people filled the church at all times, most Christians dont pray, it is hard on the flesh, my burden was increasing night and day. Went to prayer, my prayer partner was there ahead of me, we prayed for revival till the burden became well nigh unbearable, I cried out like a woman in labor, then the burden left us, then quiet waiting, suddenly, without warning Jesus stood before us, we did not move, I could not look, we were afraid to speak or breathe, the Lord said nothing to us but only ravished our spirits by his presence, the sun came up, the night seemed like a half hour, God eliminates all time, all is eternity. For days that presence stayed with us, I could scarcely take up normal conversations again, they seemed so empty, earthly fellowship was a torment. Conviction came on people as they walked down the streets, they fly to pieces on the street for no reason, when we came within 2 or 3 blocks of the place (Azusa Street) people were seized with conviction." Some important points on effective prayer are these things. Set aside a time and place for prayer. Ask God to help you and direct your prayers. God is the doer of all things. Center in your heart on Him. Adjust your prayer according to His will. Use the name of Jesus in all things. Be grateful and specific. Accept what God gives you and follow His guidance always.
