"Luckyman" a short film by Brad Grandrino

9 JUNE 2012

INT. BEDROOM - FOUR A.M. It is the dead of night, around four a.m. A man and his wife sleep on a large bed in a dark, banal bedroom. A phone by the bed, resting atop a small bureau, rings. As it rings, we see several shots of the room, most notably an FBI badge attached to a wide mirror on another bureau. The hand of AGENT FRANK COOPER reaches over to the phone and slowly picks it up, holding the receiver against the side of his face. He yawns. As he speaks, he sounds exhausted. COOPER Hello? Yes sir. Cooper moves from beneath the covers and sits on the beds edge, scratching his head. COOPER No, sir, its fine. Beat. Coopers wife turns and faces him, whispering. MRS. COOPER Frank? Cooper places one hand against the phones bottom speaker and looks at his wife, whispering to her. COOPER Its alright, go back to bed. Mrs. Cooper grunts, but rolls over. Cooper listens intently to the phone, speaking quietly. COOPER Yeah. Yeah. Vincent? (beat) Ash Vincent? He says this with some disbelief. Cooper sighs. He wipes an exasperated face with his hand. COOPER Sir, I dont think--- Yes. Yes, I understand why they would want to bring him in, but... Mr. Vincents condition... may complicate things. Cooper looks out the window at the night sky. Not a single sign of life out there.

COOPER Of course. Alright. Well... well try our best. They want him alive, got it. Sure. Ill call Sanderton right away. Cooper hangs up the phone. He sits at the edge of his bed and lets out a huge sigh, rubbing his face with both hands. His wife stirs beside him. She gets up and puts her arm around her husband. MRS. COOPER Was that Reynolds? Cooper just stares at the floor. COOPER Yep. His wife smiles playfully. MRS. COOPER Gave you another impossible assignment? Cooper chuckles, but he isnt amused. COOPER Impossible. Yeah. CUT TO INT. APARTMENT - SOON We are in another room, this time a pigsty apartment. A single mattress lies on the floor in front of a TV. On the TV is static, shining upon the body of a young man resting on the mattress in his underwear. This is AGENT JERRY SANDERTON, another federal agent, much younger than Cooper. A cell phone rests on his bare back, and it begins to glow and ring. Sanderton wakes up suddenly, almost panicking. He flips over and the cell phone falls to the floor. After catching his breath for a moment, Sanderton spots the cell phone and picks it up, holding it to his ear. SANDERTON Hello? (beat) Right now? You gotta be kidding. He sounds overly annoyed. CUT TO

INT. VAN - FIVE A.M. Agent Cooper, wearing a suit and tie, sits behind the steering wheel of a mini-van parked below a yellow light at the curb of an empty street. The sky is dark blue as dawn approaches. Nearby is a row of shops, most notably a convenience store. Cooper lights a cigarette just when the passengers door swings open. Agent Sanderton, wearing a red hoodie and jeans, gets in the car, closing the door behind him. He is shivering in the early morning cold. Cooper nods while staring out the windshield. COOPER Agent Sanderton. SANDERTON What the fuck are we doing out here at five in the morning? COOPER Watch your tongue, kid. Sanderton looks over Coopers attire. SANDERTON I thought you said to show up incognito. What the hell is this? COOPER Its called a suit. SANDERTON And what would be the difference between that and your regular uniform? Cooper pauses to take a drag from his cigarette. He turns to his partner. COOPER This one isnt blue. Sanderton grunts. Cooper looks him over. COOPER What the hell are you wearing? You look like a goddamn drug-peddler. SANDERTON Its my undercover gear. Its what normal cops wear when theyre undercover.

COOPER Exactly, and thats why good cops avoid that outfit. Its too damn obvious. Sanderton is growing bored with the conversation. SANDERTON Whatever, what are we doing here? Who is this Ashley Vincent chick and why does she matter? COOPER Ash Vincent. His name is Ash Vincent, hes a guy. SANDERTON Oh. COOPER And hes... a very peculiar individual. Sanderton seems intrigued. SANDERTON Peculiar how? Cooper sighs and takes another drag from his cig. He doesnt look at his partner. COOPER Ash Vincent is a very lucky person. Very lucky. SANDERTON So he gambles? COOPER No no no, he doesnt gamble. Hes a good kid, actually. Clean record. Well, that goes without saying. Sanderton stares at his partner, confused. SANDERTON I dont get it. Cooper exhales a burst of cigarette smoke. COOPER He is extremely fortunate, in the sense that he always gets what he (MORE) (CONTINUED)

COOPER (contd) wants. Hes... well, we suspect he isnt from around here. SANDERTON What, like a foreigner? This guys some sort of terrorist? Cooper shakes his head in frustration. COOPER No, jackass, youre not listening. He takes another drag from the cig, exhales, continues... COOPER Hes a white boy, age twenty-four. He doesnt have any family, no friends that we know of. But he has a gift. An unusual, supernatural gift. (beat) Hes always right. Always gets what he wants. Has full control over his own destiny, and even the destinies of those around him. Like I said: he is a very, very lucky man. Sanderton doesnt know what to say. He doesnt believe a word of it. SANDERTON Come on. Thats not possible. I mean, thats just not something that exists. COOPER Thats what I thought at first, too, so I had to find him myself, had to see him for myself. Its unbelievable. It starts raining and hes got no umbrella, it either stops raining immediately or an umbrella rolls up to his feet. He gets hungry so he walks up to a vendor, has no money, and he finds a fiver -- right there on the ground below his nose. He gets free shit all the time simply by walking over and taking it and nobody notices, nobody stops him. Cooper ashes his cigarette out the window beside him.

COOPER Problem is... this one time, he was being chased by somebody, I figure he owed money, I dont know. Hes running from this big guy, and hes got a huge grin on his face the whole time, like he wanted that, you know? And just as the guys catching up, Vincent runs across the street, the big guy follows -a car comes out of the blue and hits this guy head-on. SANDERTON Wait wait wait. If Vincent owed this guy money, couldnt he have just made the cash magically appear? COOPER Of course he couldve. Which leads me to believe that he wanted to be chased. He wanted a little bit of excitement, little bit of fun. Then when things started to get ugly, well... he stopped it. Sanderton frowns, looking a bit worried. SANDERTON And now were the ones chasing him. Cooper takes a drag from his cigarette, looking out the window. COOPER Yep. This isnt going to end well. Beat. Sanderton considers everything hes just been told, and then laughs. Cooper offers him an offended glare. SANDERTON This is bullshit. Youre fucking with me, this is all bullshit. Cooper shakes his head. COOPER No. Sanderton is still grinning, not believing a word of this.

Shouldnt he be out in California or fucking France living the dream in some enormous mansion with a hundred wet and willing supermodels at his constant disposal? Cooper shrugs. COOPER Maybe he doesnt want that. SANDERTON Who wouldnt want that!? COOPER Apparently him.

7.

Coopers cigarette is at the filter, so he tosses it out the window and stares at the barren street outside. Sanderton turns to him. SANDERTON How do we know hes even gonna be here? COOPER He comes here every morning, just before sunrise. He likes watching the sun rise. Sometimes I drive out here just to see him work his magic. Cooper smiles to himself. COOPER Its funny. Every sunrise Ive seen this guy witness has been unspeakably beautiful. SANDERTON Why would he come out so early just to catch the sunrise? Couldnt he just make the sun rise at noon if he wanted to? And why here? Cooper lets out yet another heavy sigh, growing increasingly agitated by Sandertons stupid questions. He uses his thumb and forefinger to massage his temple. (CONTINUED)

COOPER Jesus, I dont know. Why dont you ask him if we catch him? Sanderton smirks a cocky smirk. SANDERTON When we catch him. I still doubt this guys "supernatural" abilities. Plus Im pretty fast, you know. Cooper smirks and lets out a grunt. COOPER I guarantee hes faster. Sanderton frowns. SANDERTON Yeah, well, well s-All of a sudden there is a loud banging on the window at Sandertons side. Sanderton jumps, alert, eyes wide as dinner plates, and faces the window. Standing outside, looking into the car, is a disheveled old homeless man. We hear his muffled voice begging for change. Sanderton reaches into his jeans pocket, rolls down the window just a crack, and tosses some loose change out the window at the man. SANDERTON Fuck off. The homeless man clasps his hands together gratefully as he backs up toward the change that is scattered all over the street. HOBO Bless you, sir! Bless you! Sanderton rolls up the window, glaring disgustedly at the homeless man. SANDERTON Whatever. Fucking cretin. Cooper is squinting out the window at the old homeless guy, intrigued.

COOPER Strange to see the other end of the spectrum. SANDERTON What? COOPER That guy is the complete polar opposite of Ash Vincent. Sanderton stares out the window at the man. He says nothing. FADE TO EXT. STREET - DAWN The sun is beginning to rise and the sky is seafoam green. Birds are starting to sing their morning songs and one or two cars pass by. The convenience store is now open. Beside its front door, against the wall, sits the homeless man from earlier, asleep, a plastic red cup sitting next to him. Inside the mini-van, Cooper and Sanderton are also asleep. Cooper is snoring. He snores a particularly loud snore that wakes up his partner, who stares out the windshield and immediately slaps Cooper in the chest, stirring him awake as well. SANDERTON Coop, Coop, wake up. COOPER Mreh? SANDERTON Coop, is that him? Is that Vincent? Through the windshield, we see a young man approaching the convenience store. He wears a green baseball cap, a black t-shirt, leather jacket, jeans, and some sort of big necklace dangling from his thin neck. Cooper and Sanderton watch him as he enters the convenience store. COOPER Thats our guy. SANDERTON So what now? Do we go get him? Sanderton, tense, already has his hand on the door handle.

Soon ASH VINCENT emerges from the store. He walks up to the curb and looks around. Behind him, the homeless man stirs to life and asks for change. Ash kneels in front of the man and smiles, handing him the recently-purchased lottery ticket. Sanderton is in awe. SANDERTON Hes insane. Cooper, meanwhile, is smiling, pleased. COOPER He aint a bad guy, Ill give him that. The homeless man stares at the ticket, and then his eyes widen as Ash stands back up and looks at the man, smiling. A wide grin spreads across the hobos face as he stands up and offers Ash a huge bear hug. As the homeless man dances about, yelling gleefully, Ash walks away, heading in the direction away from the van. Sanderton reaches for the door-handle. SANDERTON Lets do this. COOPER Hold on! COOPER (contd) caught him? Hm? Hes gonna find a way out. He always does. Its inevitable. SANDERTON Ill be the judge of that. Sanderton reaches for the door-handle again, but Cooper interrupts him once more. COOPER Im gonna be honest, Sanderton. Im only doing this because I was assigned to do it. I know we wont get the guy. Ill follow him, but the second he sees me, or the instant he knows weve got him, Im done. Because at that point his fate -- and ours -- will be entirely up to him. Sanderton considers this for a brief moment, but ultimately does not buy it. SANDERTON See, Coop, thats the difference between you and I. Unlike you, I dont see failure as a viable option. Without another word, Sanderton opens his car door and exits the vehicle, closing the door behind him. Cooper sighs. COOPER Its your funeral, kid. Cooper also exits the vehicle, closing the door behind him. Together, the two agents slowly follow after Ash Vincent, maintaining a safe distance all the while. CUT TO EXT. STREET - SOON Ash Vincent moves down the street, which is now growing a bit populated with people walking about. Cooper and Sanderton follow closely behind, but Ash never suspects a thing. They eventually reach an intersection, and Ash is stopped at the crosswalk. Nearby, a glowing sign reads "DO NOT WALK."

SANDERTON We got him. Sanderton and his partner move in on Ash, who gazes at the glowing sign. The sign immediately changes and reads "WALK," and Ash skips across the street. Sanderton stops in the middle of the pavement for a second, slightly taken aback, but smiling a small, impressed smile. SANDERTON Lucky bastard. COOPER Come on. The two agents continue following Ash across the street. At one point, Ash turns a corner. Once the two agents reach the corner and turn, they pause when they find Ash standing in front of a store, staring at a display of fresh green apples. Beside the display stands a man -- presumably the store-owner -- standing with his arms folded, watching Ash with suspicious eyes. Next to this man is the front door to his store. Ash gazes at the door and smiles. Suddenly, a teenage boy runs out of the store fast with something under his arm. The store-owner spots him and yells, frantically, STORE-OWNER Hey! You! Without hesitation, the store-owner runs after the kid, screaming all the while. STORE-OWNER You get back here you little prick! Once the store-owner is out of sight, Ash, pleased with himself, bends over to pick up a green apple. However, the instant his hand touches an apple, he turns his head toward the two agents and frowns. Cooper and Sanderton frown too as their eyes lock with Ashs. Ashs eyes widen, but a small smile appears on his face. Still holding the apple, he darts off in the direction he had already been heading. Sanderton begins running toward Ash, and for a moment Cooper considers doing the very same, but then he stops and instead adjusts his tie, shaking his head and smiling a defeated smile. Sanderton turns to look back at his partner.

SANDERTON What are you doing, Coop? Come on! Hes getting away! COOPER Forget it, Sanderton, he already got away. He saw us. We lost. Come on. Hes got all the cards now. SANDERTON Youre kidding. COOPER Do you not remember what I said earlier? He knows were on his trail, therefore he won. Hes in full control of the situation. It is physically impossible for us to catch him at this juncture. Sanderton is frustrated. He appears to consider this for a moment, but then he dismisses it entirely. SANDERTON I think Ill take my chances. Without hesitating, Sanderton darts after Ash. Cooper calls out to him. COOPER Sanderton! JERRY! Agent Sanderton continues running until he eventually turns a corner, gone. Cooper sighs. He removes a cigarette from his pocket and lights it, shaking his head, turning back toward the direction of his van. COOPER Idiot. CUT TO EXT. STREET - MOMENTS LATER Sanderton turns the corner and looks around, eventually spotting Ash, who is peering behind him. Ash sees Sanderton and faces forward again, picking up his speed. Sanderton doesnt wait to chase after him. As Agent Sanderton pursues the subject, a skateboard rolls out in front of him. Sanderton, quick on his feet, hops over the skateboard without a problem. intersection, he is almost hit by a black car that appears seemingly out of nowhere, honking its horn in terror. Sanderton stops in front of the car, jolted, and taps his hand on the hood, then continues chasing after Ash. Up ahead, Ash turns yet another corner. Sanderton soon approaches the corner, but as soon as he turns, he bumps into the same homeless man from earlier, who is still wearing a wide grin. The hobo grabs Sanderton by the shoulders and stares at him with wide eyes. HOBO I won! I won! Can you believe it!? A million dollars! A million! Sanderton is trying to look past the enthused homeless guy, but the hobo insists on forcing the agent to keep his eyes on him. HOBO Im the luckiest man alive! Sanderton spots Ash about thirty yards ahead, moving quickly. He grabs the homeless man by his shoulders and looks into his wild eyes. SANDERTON Not quite. Still gripping the hobo by his shoulders, Sanderton throws him onto the curb. The homeless man stumbles and falls on his side, moaning, while an unfazed Sanderton runs past him. Up ahead, Sanderton spots Ash, who has just turned another corner. Sanderton quickly lets out an exacerbated groan, but continues after Ash anyway. He approaches the alley on the right, makes the turn into it, and -- sees Ash Vincent, standing in front of a huge brick wall at the end of the alley with nowhere else to go. Despite appearing to be trapped, Ash is leaning against the wall, smiling as he takes a big bite out of the apple and eyes Sanderton. Sanderton spots Ash and grins, now walking slowly toward his foe, knowing that he has won. ASH Jerry Sanderton, right? Ash stretches his right arm, motioning for Sanderton to shake hands with him, as Sanderton walks up to him without saying anything.

ASH So good to meet yo--Without warning Sanderton offers Ash a swift punch in the stomach. In pain, Ash drops his apple, which rolls onto the street, and falls to the ground on his side, grabbing his stomach, but still smiling. ASH Nice to meet you, too, I guess. Sanderton kneels beside Ashs cringing body, hovering over him. SANDERTON Shut up. Ash lifts his hands up slowly, mockingly. His voice is still pained. ASH Hey, youre the boss. Sanderton looks over Ash, his eyes immediately catching the red string around Ashs neck. Attached to the necklace, resting upon Ashs chest, is a white rabbits foot. Sanderton scoops the rabbits foot in his hand and holds it up, smiling. SANDERTON This is it, isnt it? This is it. This... lucky fucking rabbits foot... is the source of your power. Isnt it. The question is rhetorical, as Sanderton is one hundred percent certain of himself. Ashs smile does not fade. ASH Yep. You got me. Sanderton chuckles, shaking his head, still staring at the lucky rabbits foot in his hand. SANDERTON Unbelievable. ASH Mm.

SANDERTON Not so lucky now, are ya? Instead of replying with some snarky comeback, Ash quickly shuts his eyes, knowing what is going to happen next, and Sanderton offers him a powerful punch to the face. Everything goes black. FADE INTO INT. ABANDONED OLD ROOM Ash Vincent wakes up in a wooden chair. He has a swollen black eye. His hands are tied in a strong knot behind his back. He tries to move them, but the knot is too strong, even for a man with his otherwise impeccable luck. Dangling in front of Ashs face is his lucky rabbits foot, attached to the necklace (the broken string has apparently been re-tied), which is tied to a rusty metal chain hanging from the ceiling. There are no windows in this room, and nobody else in it save for Sanderton, who stands before Ash, the dangling necklace between them both. In Sandertons mouth rests a lit cigarette. He inhales and then blows smoke right in Ashs face. Ash shuts his eyes and coughs for a moment, then opens them and smiles at Sanderton, appearing slightly amused. SANDERTON Well isnt this interesting. The Luckyman himself, sitting here before me, tied to a wooden chair, with nowhere to go. Have you tried escaping from that knot? Its pretty strong, isnt it? ASH It is. Youre a very adept knotsman. Congratulations. Sanderton responds to Ashs sarcasm with another swift punch to his face. Ashs head turns as his face absorbs the hit. He spits out blood, but the smile never leaves his face.

SANDERTON Tell me, Ash. May I call you Ash? ASH Id really rather you didnt. SANDERTON Sure thing, Ash. Sanderton stretches his hand forward and grabs the dangling rabbits foot, shaking it slightly, the chain rattling. SANDERTON (CONTD) Now tell me, just how exactly does this little trinket of yours work? I tried putting it on, and frankly, I felt nothing. Im not daft, Ash. I know theres more to this. So tell me. He lets go of the rabbits foot and offers Ash a stern stare. SANDERTON (CONTD) Whats the secret? Ash frowns, getting serious for a moment. ASH Do you really wanna know? Sanderton rolls his eyes, in no mood for games. SANDERTON Yes, Ash. I really wanna know. ASH No, I dont think you understand, Jerry. May I call you Jerry? Sanderton smiles. SANDERTON Id really rather you didnt. ASH Sure thing, Jerry. Now, Jerry, what Im asking you, simply put, is, do you honestly think that you can handle this immense responsibility?

SANDERTON I think I can handle it. ASH Because once I divulge the secret to you, thats it. Theres no going back, Jerry. (beat) Are you prepared for that? Sanderton is growing impatient. He leans in very close to Ashs face, pissed off. SANDERTON Just tell me, ya little shit. Ash says nothing. Instead, he smiles, and pauses for a brief moment. And then he spits in Sandertons face. Sanderton shuts his eyes and steps back, disgusted, groaning. He wipes off his face with both hands, and as he does this, the cigarette drops from his lips. The cigarette, still lit, hits the ground and bounces once, then remains still on the dirty floor. Sandertons face turns into something fierce as he gazes at Ash, who replies by smiling and raising one eyebrow. In one swift move, Sanderton punches Ash in the face yet again. SANDERTON You fucking bastard! Another punch to Ashs face. Ash is severely injured, but his smile remains. Sanderton brings his arm back once more and yet again punches Ash in the face. He does this two more times, and then steps back, tired, panting. SANDERTON Alright. Well play it your way. Sanderton removes a cigarette from his hoodie pocket and places it between his lips. SANDERTON Evidently you want to die. And you always get what you want, right? He reaches into the opposite pocket and pulls out a matchbook. Sanderton opens the matchbook, smiling at Ash, and removes a match, but before he can strike it, he looks ahead and frowns, an expression of panic taking over his face. falls out of his mouth. He drops the matchbook, which falls to the ground, about a foot away from the lit cigarette from a few moments earlier. Sanderton, stepping back a few inches, grabs hold of his chest, his eyes widening in pain. He staggers a bit, and tries to speak, but only segmented groans escape his mouth. Ash merely smiles that devious smirk at him. ASH Feeling okay, buddy? Sandertons eyes are wide in agony and disbelief. His trembling lips manage to utter a few short words. SANDERTON Are you doing this? ASH I think all that cigarette-smoking is doing this. Ash nods, mock-sympathetically. Sanderton continues staggering backward, slowly, while clenching his heart, eyes as wide as UFOs. He stares at Ash, who smiles back at him, and lets out a pained groan. Knowing exactly whats going to happen next, Ash, still tied to the chair, moves to the side and the chair tips over, bringing Ash down with it. Ash now lies on his side on the ground. Just as Ash and the chair hit the floor, Sanderton falls forward -- and his neck is caught by the dangling necklace, which begins choking him. Still grabbing his chest with one hand, Sanderton tries using the other to grip the bottom of the necklace. Meanwhile, Ash spots the lit cigarette and matchbook several feet in front of him, so he tries to move his body and the chair toward it. Sanderton notices this, and he uses the hand that was gripping the necklace to reach out toward Ash. In doing so, Sanderton inadvertently turns his head quickly in Ashs direction, and this act causes the necklace around his neck to tighten. There is a loud crack and snapping sound, followed by one last gasp emerging from Sandertons dying lips. His neck has snapped. His hands fall at his side, and his limp body hangs from the chain above him. Ash smiles. ASH Cool.

Ash then focuses his attention to the lit cigarette and matchbook resting several feet in front of him on the floor. The matchbook is still about eight inches away from the lit cigarette. Ash frowns. He turns toward the dangling body of Agent Jerry Sanderton, and squints. There is a low creaking sound, and then a snap, as the necklace around Sandertons neck breaks. Sandertons body quickly falls to the ground with a loud thump. The impact of the body is just strong enough to blow the small matchbook eight inches closer to the lit cigarette, and within a few short moments the cigs cherry ignites the entire matchbook, which then bursts into flames. Ash sees this and the smile returns to his face. He quickly flips the chair over so that his back is facing the burning matches, and he inches himself and the chair toward the flame. He eases the rope tying his hands together toward the hot flame. The flame begins burning through the rope until it is weak enough for Ash to break free. He lifts himself up and steps on the flame on the floor, putting it out, and then brushes himself off. He looks down at the floor and spots the crumpled cigarette, which is somehow still lit. He bends over and picks it up, sticks it between his lips, and inhales, smiling. Ash Vincent approaches the dead body of Jerry Sanderton. He leans over his torso and stares into the wide, lifeless eyes of the federal agent. Ashs eyes move to the lucky rabbits foot resting on Sandertons chest. Ash holds the trinket in his hand and then looks into Sandertons eyes, still smiling. He drops the rabbits foot back onto Sandertons unmoving chest. ASH You can have it. He shrugs. ASH (CONTD) I make my own luck. Ash stands up and walks away from Sandertons cadaver. The last thing we see is the lucky rabbits foot, and then we... FADE TO BLACK. THE END.
