INTERNATIONAL PIANO FESTIVAL Great music is at home in Brescia. Every year, the magic of the International Piano Festival attracts the greatest piano virtuosos and captivates the public with its very high level programmes. Muti, Abbado, Rostropovich, Lang Lang, Martha Argerich, Krystian Zimerman, Ivo Pogorelich, Stanislav Bunin, Alicia de Larrocha, Grigory Sokolov and many other musicians, orchestras and directors have participated in this event, which is considered one of the most important piano festivals in the world. MAJOR EXHIBITS Van Gogh, Gauguin, Renoir, and Matisse are only a few of the great artists who have been showcased in some of the recent major international exhibits hosted in Brescia, receiving some of the highest visitor numbers in Italy. The stunning setting of the exhibits is the evocative Santa Giulia Museum, a Unesco World Heritage Site. The Museum is located in a Benedictine convent dedicated to Saints Salvatore and Giulia, established in 753 AD by the Lombard King Desiderius. This is the civic museum, the site of greatest historical and cultural importance, where over the centuries archaeological and monumental evidence have superimposed themselves, such as for example the basilica of San Salvatore (8th century AD), with the underlying archaeological area (Roman house, 1st to 4th century AD), the churches of Santa Maria in Solario (12th century AD) and Santa Giulia (15th 16t centuries AD) and three Renaissance cloisters. Nearby we find the Capitolium (built by the Emperor Vespasian in 73 AD) and the Roman Theatre, which had space for up to 15,000 spectators and was one of the largest such structures of the age. The Santa Giulia Museum lies at the heart of Brescia, and is the custodian of its history, a site of great artistic importance and an obligatory destination on any visit to this beautiful city. www.museiarte.brescia.it www.bresciamusei.com

As well as sites of international importance, such as the Santa Guilia Museum, Brescia is also home to some of Italys top art galleries. The cultural exhibits offer the opportunity to learn about some of the most prestigious Italian and foreign artists. However, there is more than just classical art and antiquities. Important galleries offer the best of modern and contemporary art, presenting a previously unknown and unexpected version of Brescia and its cultural vibe. INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY BIENNALE Every second year, from June to September, the best of world photography converges on Brescia. The International Photography Biennale takes place in the citys historic old town, inside museums, churches, palazzos, courtyards and art galleries which host works by global professionals. Retrospectives, cultural shows, conferences and various events are organised alongside the Biennale offering the occasion to discover some of the hidden corners of this beautiful art capital. Brescias photographic tradition is consolidated through various galleries and the National Photography Museum, where it is possible to discover some of the oldest existing cameras. www.museokendamy.com www.museobrescia.net

SUMMER

SUMMER, PARTIES, HOLIDAYS.

The lights of the fireworks animate the lakeside towns. In 2011, Lake Garda entered the Guinness Book of World Records with a pyrotechnic spectacle which occurred at the same time in all the towns along Lake Garda: the Great Night of the Stars. Thousands of fireworks illuminated the lakeshore, and there were numerous special events dedicated to fun, as well as wine and gastronomy. In the summer, every municipality organises town festivals and food fairs. Moniga del Garda hosts Italia in Rosa (June), a national show dedicated to Chiaretto wine (the little citys pride and joy), offered to the public together with several of the best Italian ros wines. The restaurants in Clusane, on Lake Iseo, organise Baked Tench Week (July), to promote a tasty, traditional fish recipe. Marone presents Italian DOP olive oils: the From olives to oil event (June) promotes meetings with specialists, tastings and themed lunches for the many visitors who attend. Nearby Sale Marasino hosts the curious Pumpkin festival with a prize for the largest entry: last years winner weighed a whopping 440 kg. In general, throughout the province (from the lakes to the plains to the mountain towns) there is a wide variety of food festivals, local parties and events for tourists. www.lagodigardatuttolanno.it www.italiainrosa.it www.clusane.it www.rivieradegliulivi.bs.it

CENTOMIGLIA REGATTA Centomiglia is a sailing regatta held in September every year on Lake Garda. It began in 1951 with 17 boats participating; today there are more than 300 sailboats and it is a spectacular site to see them out on the lake together. The regatta begins at the port of Bogliaco (Gargnano), then travels north along the lake as far as Riva, before navigating south to Desenzano and returning again to Gargnano. Centomiglia is the longest European lake regatta, although the length of the route varies according to the type and size of the boats. It is a very difficult competition, with high level participants including some of the sailors and skippers who will go on to compete in the Americas Cup and other international level competitions. www.centomiglia.it

CRAFTS AND ANTIQUES MARKET AND EXHIBIT Every August, thousands of visitors flock to Bienno, in the heart of the Camonica Valley, for the Crafts and Antiques Market and Exhibit. Hundreds of exhibitors display their works and demonstrate their craftsmanship to visitors in various courtyards and loggias, piazzas and alleyways, in historic wineries and in front of the ancient vestibules of this charming little hamlet, considered one of Italys Most Beautiful Towns. In the evening, visitors are guided by the light of thousands of candles to discover the most secret corners of the town, in a medieval dimension within which you can lose track of time: events, shows, Renaissance music, dancing, acrobats, jugglers and flag throwers in traditional costumes. www.mostramercatobienno.it September is the ideal month for a holiday on the lake, a visit to Brescia and the nearby art cities, relaxation at a thermal spa, shopping in for Italian fashion and tasting the excellent products of this charming province. Sunshine and fun are guaranteed! Spas, beauty farms and wellness centres welcome an elegant and demanding cosmopolitan clientele who wish to achieve their ideal physical and mental shape. There is a wide variety of offers, with hotels, spas and wellness centres which guarantee elegance, confidentiality and the highest level of professionalism: a unique offer, typical of the province of Brescia.

GIMONDI BIKE International mountain bike competition which takes place every year in late September in Iseo. The competition boasts a charming route through the delightful setting of Franciacorta, among hills, vineyards and medieval castles. The ascent up Monte Cognolo is the most difficult portion of the route, and also the most exciting. From this section of the race, the Torbiere del Sebino mountains are visible to the left in all their splendour. After this point, the hardest part is over and the route ends with a breath-taking descent to Iseo where, after a short journey along the main streets of the centre of town, the finish line awaits.

TYPICAL FLAVOURS In the fertile agricultural zone of the Brescian plains, restaurants, inns, taverns and agriturismi of the Oglio Valley invite you to taste typical local flavours (for example, the Bassa Bresciana Fair, in Bagnolo Mella, in September). Wine is still on show with the Botticino DOC show, which takes place in the municipality of the same name located on the outskirts of Brescia and well known for its marble quarries. Gottolengo hosts the food festival dedicated to a local product, the potato, and in Limone del Garda, during the beautiful Lemon Grove Under the Stars event, no lunch or dinner attended by the many tourists is complete without a shot of limoncello. The Garda lemons are cultivated in picturesque, traditional lemon groves, open to the public for visits. Pisogne organises the Mushroom and Chestnut Festival (in September), showcasing two typical traditional products of the Camonica Valley. www.comune.bagnolomella.bs.it www.comune.botticino.bs.it www.rivieradeilimoni.it www.comune.pisogne.bs.it FRANCIACORTA IN BIANCO Franciacorta in Bianco is the most authoritative show dedicated to the Italian art of cheese producing. Established in 1996 to promote the milk produced by Brescian farmers, it presents 400 varieties of excellent cheeses of the highest quality and is attended by approximately one hundred producers. Visitors take an ideal journey through the most prestigious Italian cheese consortiums, important firms, rustic mountain cheese production and small local producers, all of whom guide you through a voyage of discovery, introducing the most authentic and genuine flavours of the local gastronomic tradition. The event is held in October in Castegnato. www.franciacortainbianco.it

A BRESCIAN PRODUCT: CASONCELLO The casoncello (a raviolo filled with meant and other ingredients) is Brescias pride and joy. There are thousands of interpretations of this dish. In February, you must visit Breno, in the Camonica Valley, where you will find caicc (casoncelli); to the south of Brescia in Gambara, in March, the local trattorias serve tortelli stuffed with pumpkin (a Mantuan influence). Pumpkin is also a key ingredient in the tortelli served in April in Montichiari; then in June in Palazzolo you will find csonsi, stuffed with meat this time. In Lograto, they are served in both restaurants and family homes (in June), whereas in Darfo Boario Terme they are prepared for the feast of Saint Anna (July and August). In October, Calvisano hosts the Sagra Viadanese, naturally with casonsi on the menu; a few days later Acquafredda hosts the Festa della funzione and the ritual is also celebrated by dining on tortelli and agnoli. In November, you will find them in Bottonaga, at the festival organised by the Italian alpine troops, and casoncelli are also prepared in November in Nuvolento. All Brescians produce excellent casoncelli, but two of the most famous festivals are held in September: the Brescian casoncello festival in Barbariga and the Biolcheria Festival in nearby Longhena. www.fieradelcasoncello.it

SKI SEASON
L Pontedilegno offers night skiing, on illuminated runs; in Vezza dOglio there are snow shoe paths for the Moonlight snow shoe walk; and various events are organised in Corteno Golgi, Montecampione, Collio and on Mount Gaver to enjoy fun with friends. Obviously, there are many opportunities to enjoy the Brescian mountains in new and original ways: along long cross country skiing trails through great, silent forests, or on sleds drawn by huskies. But perhaps the most comfortable option is just shopping and enjoying an aperitif in one of the charming mountain villages. www.adamelloski.com

The stall holders offer local products, curiosities, clothing and crafts. At the same time, art exhibits, cultural events and historical and religious revocations are organised. The market takes over the entire city centre. www.comune.brescia.it Antiques markets are held in Desenzano, Gargnano, Lonato, Brescia, Toscolano Maderno and in various other towns. Antique paintings, furniture, medals, jewellery, little objects of yesteryear, working utensils and commonly used tools: you will find everything youre looking for. Start rummaging!

BAGOLINO CARNIVAL February is the month of the Bagolino Carnival. The Carnival began in the sixteenth century and has many unique features. The festivities begin on Sunday, when a group of dancing ballerinas, masked figures and allegorical floats parade through the town streets. The next day the dancers begin their first dance, but Tuesday marks the real Carnival day, with dancing until nightfall. There are two distinct stages to the festivities: first, the dancers (balar), dressed in embroidered jackets and knee breeches, stockings, white shirts and black ties, with a shawl of vividly coloured silk, dance below the homes of friends and relatives and especially those who have donated the gold, ribbons and jewellery used to decorate their festive hats; then the masked figures (mascher), dress as old men and women and speak to the tourists in falsetto voices, making silly jokes without their true identity ever being recognisedthe festivities are spontaneous and there are no rules! What doesw it mean? It means that you can expect jokes and tricks of every kind. Indeed, the Bagolino Carnival maintains its independent spirit and the originality of its ceremonies. The entire town participates in this unique event which is well worth experiencing. www.bagolinoinfo.it
