What is CCS?
CCS is a sequence of technologies capture, transport, storage which has the potential of preventing large quantities of CO2 from being released in the atmosphere. One of the leading technologies directly related to CO2 emissions mitigation.

Has the potential to reduce the overall cost of emissions mitigation plan.
Has been rated among the priorities of the European Research Council. Has been officially contextualized through the introduction of the DIRECTIVE

2009/31/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council.

Has been identified by the IPCC as vital part of a portfolio of options to mitigate global climate change. Has been identified by the IEA as a technology for a more sustainable energy future.

CCS technologies Capture Options

All capture approaches are technically proven and viable.

All three capture options can be utilised for CCS with CO2 capture rates up to 90%.

CCS technologies Transport Options

Transport by Pipeline

Transport by Land (rail, truck tankers)

Transport by Shipping

Of the three available options, transport by pipeline is the most likely to be used in a commercial scale. 6,000km of pipelines have been safely transporting CO2 in the USA for the last 20 years
5

CCS technologies Storage Options

Geological Storage Options Depleted oil and gas reservoirs Use of CO2 in enhanced oil an gas recovery Deep Saline formations Use of CO2 in enhanced coal bed methane recovery Deep unmineable coal seams Other suggested options (basalts, oil shales, cavities)

Deep saline reservoirs and depleted oil and gas fields are the most suitable for CO2 storage, as their storage mechanisms are relatively better understood.
CO2 storage for EOR, presents additional economic benefits.
