Put your thinking cap on, People! Nowadays, we shall be friendly to the term unconventional energy. This term is commonly related with shale gas (check out You Urge for Something New? Y U No Try Shale Gas?! on our previous edition), coalbed methane, shale oil, heavy oil, and even gas hydrate. Successful exploration, exploitation, and production of these energy resources wouldnt be done just by a common and ordinary way of thinking. It needs a lot of huge strides taken by companies and research centers to develop cost-effective ways in discovering and most important extracting the resources safely. The X-factor behind successful production of those unconventional energy resources is communication. Without a smooth communication between the service companies and the oil and gas companies, this brand new idea will straightly be finished. And communication means people. The right men and women are needed to control and invent new technologies that will bring us the future. Those people are the ones who will be able to innovate, collaborate, and apply the technologies in order to explore the Earth in a sustainable manner. We gotta understand that there are still many resources of energy available down there for us, without hindering our thinking by calling them unconventional. Then, how do we define unconventional? If we define conventional energy as light oil or clean gas in sandstone reservoirs with high porosity and permeability, how do we explain unconventional energy? Unconventional itself may refer to the hydrocarbons or the reservoirs. Examples of the unconventional hydrocarbons are heavy oil, sour gas, and waxy crude (Google em!), while the unconventional reservoirs stand for fractured basement, tight sandstones, shale, coal beds, and anything except highly porous and permeable sandstones or carbonates. Just like I stated before, the technologies to explore these resources are continuing to develop. We have to realize that oil and gas can be found in many places with various qualities, and they can be developed or produced in significant number. And finally, should we still call it unconventional? Prepare your self to be the future of Earths energy, TGL UGM!
