Department of Computer Science Even/Odd Semester Examination 2012 2nd Semester Batch 2008 Basic Electronics (CS-111)
Instructions: Attempt any FIVE Questions. All Questions carry equal marks. Draw neat and clean diagrams. Hrs. Date: 21/05/2012 Max. Marks: 60 Time allowed: 3

Q1.

(a) How many coulombs do 93.8 x 106 electrons represent? (b) If 50 J of energy are available for every 10 C of charge, what is the voltage? (c) You are measuring the current in a circuit that is operated on a 10 V battery. The ammeter reads 50 mA. Later, you notice that current has dropped to 30 mA. Eliminating the possibility of a resistance change, you must conclude that the voltage has changed. How much has the voltage of the battery changed, and what is its new value?

Q2.

(a) Prove that if VT = V1 + V2 +V3 + V4, then RT = R1 + R2 +R3 + R4 (b) Determine the unknown voltage drop, V3.

(c) Find the conductance for each of the following resistance value: (i) 12 (ii) 7.5 K (iii) 15 K Q3. (a) A voltage source produces an IR drop of 40 V across a 20 R1, 60 V across a 30 R2, and 180 V across a 90 R3, all in series. According to KVL, how much is applied Voltage VT? (b) A 100-W bulb normally takes 0.833A, and a 200-W bulb takes 1.666A from the 120 V power line. If these two bulbs were connected in series across a 240 V power line, prove that the current would be 1.111A in both bulbs, assuming the resistances remain constant. (c) Calculate the power in each of the three circuits.

Q4.

(a) In the following circuit, determine the resistance R2, R3, and R4.

(b) Determine RT and the current through R4 in the following circuit if Vs = 50 V.

(c) How much resistance R1 must be added in series with a 100 R2 to limit the current to 0.3A with 120 V applied? Show the schematic diagram. How much power is dissipated in each resistance? Q5. (a) A certain current source provides100 mA to a 1K load. If the resistance is decreased to 500 , what is the current in the load? (b) Show that if the voltage in the following circuit is increased to three times its present value, the current will triple in value.

(c) Determine the total current and the current through each resistor.

Q6.

(a) What is the difference between a pentavalent atom and a trivalent atom? What are other names for these atoms? (b) Explain what the barrier potential is and how it is created?

Q7.
