How does Mary Shelley create atmosphere in chapter five of Frankenstein?

Mary Shellys use of effective techniques helps to create an evil, scary and horrific atmosphere in chapter 5. She does this by focusing on techniques such as characterisation, imagery, juxtaposition, dialogue, foreshadowing and narrative perspective to catch the readers attention and make them feel suspense throughout the chapter. The main point of writing the story was in 1818, when she was grieving for the death of her mother (10 days after giving birth to her) and three of her four children, she was intrigued to bring the dead back to live as a topic after she heard that a scientist calls Luigi Galvani actually brought dead tissue back to life through electricity. As most of the members in her family were dead she uses this topic to combine the story, when she gets some ideas from her own family. She also addresses some of the social-historical and moral issues of the Victorian era throughout the novel and especially in chapter five. The main story teller and the creator of the creature is victor a biological scientist. In a cold winter atmosphere the scientist start having urges to do precarious experiments. However he thought to bring a life instead to how it works. Later he collects a dead, body which was illegal in those days, and worked for several months to create a live being. Victor gets weary through-out the period while constructing the body; he did not have enough rest and time to devour I had worked nearly two years for this I had deprived my self rest and health Mary shelly has shown that the character is hard working and mentally capable when it comes to the fear of rising dead back to life. It also shows his ardour to create a life and how much passion and commitment he has. At the time of bringing the monster lifes back, Mary shelly created a dark, dreary atmosphere it was a dreary night of November. In here the word dreary means taking risk to do something or it can indicates that something suspicious can happen without knowing at rate of blink of an eye, which can lead to overwhelming. The dark and evil atmosphere has been set by cold winter theme when every single living thing becomes silent like the dead meaning complete lifeless. This also indicates the rising of evil whispers into the human mind. It also links with pathetic Fallacy; a technique that Mary Shelley used to link with the gothic genre that she used to write Frankenstein. The use of this type of atmosphere creates a melancholy image into the readers mind, leaving them tense to finding out what will happen next. However, before creating the monster the character Victor had a dream but after as he has created the monster, he realises it was completely opposite to what his expectation were the beauty of the dream vanished and breathless horror disgust filled my heart. The work which victor has done goes completely goes wrong and later he regrets the fact he was being too far with his own expectation he had before and how his high expectations had crumbled within seconds of infusing life into an inanimate body. This can also be seen as juxtaposition as the beauty of the dream turns into a horror. This is used to compare how much hatred he has to his creation and how bad the outcome has become; the effect on the atmosphere is that this creates a deep and mysterious feeling in the readers heart. From this writing technique it shows that the dream Mary shelly used to have before she gave birth to her daughter, which is she wishes that she is going to make her daughter well educated and one day she shall fulfil her dreams by making her a national story maker. But unfortunately, that dream has been demolished and she had shocking, hard hitting effect on her life after she find her daughter to be dead after couple of weeks later of her birth. Inside the novel few periods after creating the monster Victor now thinks he has been cursed because of this he presume a disaster can approach his family but as I imprinted first kiss on her lips, they became vivid with the hue of death. As victor now has earned a wrath for that wrath he is about to lose his loved ones, who is his wife. He found that via the kiss of his wife but she changes into the form of his dead mother which suggests that soon she will be dead at

the hand of the monster. This also suggests that his true love is for his Mother; as he promised her on her death bed that he would marry Elizabeth and take good care for her but he did marry her however unable to protect her from the curse he has. Mary Shelley uses the dream to foreshadow what events may occur later on in the novel. The atmosphere in here is quite mischievous and suspicious about the events that will take place later because at present the character found his love as well as the signal of death from his love ones, which links to happy ending or to the sad ending of the story. Also, this writing techniques relates to The first name given to the novel Frankenstein, which was the modern Prometheus, this is probably because Prometheus was a person in Greek legend who stole fire from the apparent Greek gods, and his punishment was that his insides were eaten out. Frankenstein could be seen similar to Prometheus as he stole life, and his punishment was the death of his loved ones. Also, we come to know about the character Henry via the written technique, which is dialogue. Henry is a really good trust worthy friend of victor, he is patient and sensitive. He is concerned about victor that what happens to him every year, what for gods sake, is the matter? again Mary Shelley shows the character is caring and a person who worries about person who is nearer to him, a quote from the text implies that he is so close to Victor like his own brother, My Dear Victor Henry uses the word dear to describe his friend in which this shows that Victor is an important person as Henry says Dear, if it was not someone that he loved or cared about, then he would not have used this word. Later From victor perspective he finds that the monster is evil and tries to hurt him even though the monster just wants to greet him in nice manner saying hello and wants his attention. By this victor get frightened and lose his speech. also as he see the monster he try to expresses his emotion but the face of the monster is so frustrating he get stunned in his mind how can I describe my emotion at this catastrophe finally the character weaknesses shown here that he is unable to speech seeing the monster he has created although he was feeling brave that he will raised the dead. The atmosphere in here is covered with fear as the monster stand front of him; victor can not see anything except the monsters horrible face which indicates the atmosphere must filled with monsters gruesome rage because the fact he cant get his attention. As the events continues Victor is getting in pain and regrets his wrong doing as the monster approaches him to greet him. The character victor was so afraid that he became helpless; lost his ways of what to do as he mentioned oh save me oh save me in here marry Shellie show how the character is coping with fear and how he is going through hard hitting emotion. The atmosphere is quite tense in here also it was made kind of deadly or similar description of day of resurrection as the dead, raised alive and when the bad ones approaches the good one for help according to religious point of views. however, As marry Shelly had a miserable life, we come to know that via this character she is expressed what kind of pain she has gone through when certain terrible thing approached her(getting reminded or having dreams of the dead one) during that time. In conclusion during this essay I have found that the ideas of creating this story were mainly from her life story. The atmospheres were probably set by the pain she gone through at each stage during her life and it was done to make the reader feel the pain she had. Also, to make this issue more serious to the reader she combines her fate to make it realistic. The dark dreary wintery theme was set by the winter season when she was having tenderness in her heart; the cold indicates that every living thing has begotten feeling of emptiness in their life. The morals of the story were the sin of yourselves might cause your love one to be in distress. From my point of view I think that Mary shelly gives message that the forbidden thing will keep forbidden neither anyone has the right to change it or replace it. If some forbidden things are invented by a person then they shell regret for the rest of their life. After reading this

novel the reader may think that every individuals lives may not be in distress until they cross certain limits of their own life.
