Delay of openSUSE 12.2 RC1
On monday Stephan Kulow wrote a mail to the openSUSE-Factory mailinglist in which he express his doubts that openSUSE 12.2 RC1 will be released this week. He thinks that it might not even ready in this month. Although the live CDs work again the DVD does not. There are around 120 packages that doesn't work yet. Two major packages are WebYaST and the Go programming language tools. Quelle: openSUSE-Factory-Mailinglist

Announcing the Make Play Live Partner Network
In the wake of the announcement of the rst ever KDE powered tablet, quite a few interesting things are happening in the 3 background. One of them is the formation of a professional Partner Network for devices such as the Vivaldi tablet . Let's look at this Partner Network in more detail. The Make Play Live Partner Program is designed to build and support a collaborative business and economic network. Members work together to provide comprehensive professional service and product offerings around Plasma Active and devices such as Vivaldi. Professional support options make it easier to convince potential parties, such as users, clients, customers and partners, bringing KDE software to a larger group of users. As not all services needs are the same, a way to identify the right companies is important. The Make Play Live Partner Network therefore de nes four different types of partners: Add-ons Partner -- These participants focus on development and support of post-purchase content. You will usually nd the work of Add-ons Partners in the Add-ons app provided in Plasma Active, either in the form of apps or content, such as books, movies, music, etc. Integration Partner -- An integration partner is the "Goto-Resource" for customization and integration of technologies used in Make Play Live products. Integration partners have experience with technologies such as Plasma Active or the Mer operating system, and are the right partners to get these products running on your device or in your environment. Enterprise Partner -- If you need support for deployments in enterprise settings, such as companies, schools, (non)governmental organizations or elsewhere, talk to any of our enterprise partner about the challenges you face and how they are prepared to solve these for you. Retail Representative -- These partners form the retail backbone for Make Play Live products and services by offering sales channels between individual customers and Make Play Live. Partners may be represented in one or more segments of the program. All partners work together in a collaborative fashion that allows them to deliver more sophisticated and complete offerings than any individual partner could on their own. The partners also share a commitment to supporting the Free software communities and products behind the technologies, with a dual focus on direct contribution and the long-term sustainability of these communities.

John Blanford of VAULTechnology says, "As we do more computing with mobile devices, the long term trend is towards closed platforms where the software, the hardware and the available services are proprietary and locked down. We are headed for a future of closed platforms. Vivaldi is all about the ecosystem! Tablet development today is dominated by some of the world's largest companies. If we hope to play in this arena, to make a real difference in the world, we can only do it as a community. Alone we are small, but together as partners, we have a chance." Coherent Theory LLC, the company orchestrating the Vivaldi and Make Play Live efforts, is facilitating the creation and development of this Partner Network. Companies and groups that are interesting in participating are encouraged to contact Coherent Theory via email to partners@makeplaylive.com. The following members of the Make Play Live Partner Network have already joined: basysKom GmbH -- Integration Partner open-slx GmbH -- Retail Representative (Europe) VAULTechnology LLC -- Retail Representative (Americas) and Enterprise Partner KO GmbH -- Add-ons and Integration Partner Kolab Systems AG -- Enterprise Partner Xompu GmbH -- Enterprise and Add-ons Partner INdT

A New Font Repository
What do you need when you write some text? Content, of course. Apart from your content you need an additional piece to make it a shiny contribution: fonts! If you don't know already, we now have a new repository dedicated just to fonts. With the invaluable work and effort from Petr Gajdos, Takashi Iwai, and all the creative designers, we now have more than 13 14 100 Open Source fonts in the M17N:fonts repository. Most fonts are licensed under the OFL or other open/free licenses.

4 http://basyskom.com/ 5 http://www.open-slx.com 6 http://www.vaultechnology.com/ 7 http://www.kogmbh.com/ 8 http://kolabsys.com/ 9 http://www.xompu.de/ 10 http://www.indt.org/ 11 http://www.vgrade.co.uk/ 12 http://news.kde.org/2012/05/22/announcing-make-play-live-partner-network 13 http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/M17N:/fonts/ 14 http://scripts.sil.org/OFL

Thanks a lot to all! This repository contains fonts like the previously mentioned Exo typeface , the famous Linux Libertine , 17 or fonts from the Google Web fonts page to name a few. With all these fonts available at your hand, you have many choices to make your text readable and attractive as you like, be it on the Web or in print. Previous to openSUSE 12.1, all the fonts had a terrible naming convention: some contained a fonts pre x, others did not. Now all fonts follow a naming convention to make it easy to nd. So don't be surprised when your font package has been 18 renamed. If you need further information, check out my original idea from FATE#3130359 . Packagers will probably nd 19 the article about Packaging Fonts in the openSUSE Wiki helpful. The new M17N:fonts repository collects all fonts now and in the future. New fonts will appear and be developed there. To use it, add the repository to your list: zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/M17N:/fonts/openSUSE_12.1/M17N:fonts.repo Currently, the supported distributions are openSUSE 11.4, 12.1, Evergreen 11.1, 11.2, Factory, Tumbleweed, as well as SLE11 SP1 and SP2. Have fun and be creative with the new fonts! Source: thomas schraitle

Linus Torvalds' opinion to SecureBoot

While the community has sparked a debate about how to proceed with Secure Boot and it's one-time fee of $ 99, Linus Torvalds doesn't not understand the fuss. Not least because the fee doesn't go to Microsoft but to Verisign. He thinks that Fedora's step to pay the fee was the right thing to do, as long as it is possible to deactivate SecureBoot. He said, that he might use it himself if his hardware supports it. But he also warns about possible security problems since there might be some clever hacker who can abuse the system. Remote Desktop Options for Linux
Ask any long-term Linux enthusiast, and they'll be the rst to tell you there isn't much you can do with another operating system that you cant do with Linux. Oh sure, there are always going to be those legacy applications that some may people depend on. For the most part though, everything you need is readily accessible with today's modern Linux distros. One of my favorite examples of desktop Linux readiness is the various options available to control a computer remotely. Despite what newer Linux users might think, there are indeed a number of open source and closed source options available for remote PC access. In this article, I'll be exploring the best of both options from each sector of software licensing. Source: Datamation

printerd aims to be a modern print spooler for Linux

Red Hat developers Tim Waugh and Richard Hughes have announced what they call a "modern print spooler" for the Linux desktop. The printerd daemon is PolicyKit-enabled and uses D-Bus to communicate with other applications. Waugh points out, that as a design decision, printerd will only accept PDF les as input. So far, printerd only consists of a basic spooler framework and a simple command line tool. It is modelled on the Internet 32 Printing Protocol (IPP) but is not actually compatible with it. Waugh says that the team plans to implement an IPP server 33 on top of D-Bus as a separate tool but that existing CUPS drivers and backends will work with the daemon. The README le of the software also points out that since this is a new project, there is no SELinux policy for the service yet, so users compiling and running the software will have to set SELinux to permissive mode if it is included on their system. 25th Birthday of X-Window

Now we can celebrate two important things. First the 25th Birthday of X-Window Systems (X11) and the new X-Window Release 7.7. One of the important features in X11R7.7 is the support of Multitouch for Touchpads and Touchscreens. This 37 are realized through using the X.org Server 1.12 combined with the Extension Xinput 2.2. Also a great success is the modernizing of the X.org dokumentations, so the last library and protocolspeci cations was 38 converted to DocBook XML. And last but not least there are different other features and bug xes in the drivers, and 39 the XCB Libraries. All Changes you can read in short

New or updated Software for Linux

Perl 5.16.0 released
The new version 5.16.0 of the scripting language Perl is now available. The development from version 5.14.0 to the latest version took around a year. It aims to be fully compatible to the old version, altough there are now some functions marked as deprecated. A few of the changes and additions are an extension for the "use" statement, a modi cation of the substr function and more. It supports now standard case folding. Another additions is that __SUB__ now returns a reference to the current co-routine to make it easier to create recursive functions. It's now possible to use Locale and Unicode together. Another improvement with Unicode was made with the regular expressions. Quelle: h-online

Linux 3.4 released quickly, after smooth development cycle
Just over two months after its last major release, Linus Torvalds has posted the newest version of the open source Linux kernel, which supports new graphics processors from Nvidia and Intel, improves le system functionality and comes with a new security module. Torvalds, who oversees input from thousands of programmers, commented on how smoothly work on this release proceeded. "I think the 3.4 release cycle as a whole has been fairly calm. Sure, I always wish for the [release candidates] to calm down more quickly than they ever seem to do, but I think on the whole we didn't have any big disruptive events, which is just 59 how I like it," he wrote, in an email announcing the release . "Let's hope the 3.5 merge window is a calm one too." Source: Computerworld
