Summary The Rama 8 Cable Stayed Bridge which is currently under construction will provide a new crossing of the Chao Phraya River in central Bangkok . The main bridge is a 475 m long cable stayed structure supported by a single 160 m asymmetric tower . The struture is an interesting hybrid structure which utilizes a composite steel concrete main span and a cast in place post tensioned concrete land span . The design of the main cable stayed bridge is described herein . Keywords : cable - stayed bridge , camposite construction , precast concrete , post - tensioned concrete box girder , long span . 1. Introduction The Rama 8 Cable Stayed Bridge located in Bangkok Thailand , is currently under constuction. The new bridge has been named Rama 8 in commemmoration of the King ' s elder brother . The bridge over the Chao Pharaya is located in central Bangkok near the palace , between the exisitng Somdetch Phra Pinklao Bridge and Thonburi Bridge . The Rama 8 bridge will be an important component in a new east - west link in central Bangkok and a key part of the on going initiatives to improve the flow of traffic throughout the Bangkok metropolian area . The main bridge is a cable - stayed bridge with a total length of 475 m The bridge has a main span of 300 m . over the Chao Phraya River . It provides a low lover crossin with a 10.4 m vertical clearance over the 100 m wide navigation envelope . Construction of the main bridge and associated approach viaducts is being consturcted under a design - build contract between the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration ( the Owner ) and the CPB Joint Ven - ture .

2. General Description The main bridge is a 475 m long asymmetric stucture supported by a single tower . The general arrangement of the main bridge is show in Figure 2 . The main river span is 300 m in length . The land span consists of two 50 m back and a 75 m anchor span .

The main span deck is 29.2 m in width , accommodating two triffic lsnces each way witch a 5.3 m wide sidewalk for pedestrians and cyclists on each side . The main span deck is composite steel - concrete deck .

The anchor span deck is 28.4 m in width , accommodating three lenes of traffic each way , allowing for exit and entry ramps in the viaduct just beyond Pier 45 . Between Pier 42 and Pier 41 the roadway width tapers from three lanes each way to two . The deck is 27.7 m wide from Pier 41 to the face of main tower .

The pedestrian walkways on either side of the bridge end at Pier 41 and Pier 39 with stairwaynto ground level . The anchor and back span consist of 9.25 m and 2.5 m deep single
