SUNCOR ENERGY

History
The skeptics said Canada's oil sands could never be developed commercially. In 1967, Suncor Energy proved them wrong. Our people their perseverance, dedication and innovation turned vision into reality. Today, Suncor is Canadas premier integrated energy company, the fifth largest North American energy company and has a place on the global stage as one of the largest independent energy companies in the world. We provide thousands of well-paid jobs, put millions of dollars into Canadian businesses every year, take action on environmental issues, and support our communities by funding local initiatives. Our track record as an oil sands pioneer is both cause for celebration and inspiration for the future. Look to Suncor to continue leading the way expanding our oil sands operations to one of the worlds largest positions, developing renewable energy and investing in new technologies to improve our environmental performance. We're still making history.

Oil Sands

Our oil sands operations are the focus of Suncors business. We were the first company to develop the oil sands, creating an industry that is now a key contributor to Canada's prosperity. Suncor holds one of the largest positions in the oil sands. We are committed to delivering safe, low-cost production, and to being leaders in growth, technical innovation and environmental sustainability. Near Fort McMurray, Alta., Suncor recovers bitumen from oil sands through its mining and in situ operations. The bitumen from both operations is then upgraded to refinery-ready feedstock and diesel fuel. Suncor remains committed to responsible development of the oil sands as we expand our operations generating the crude oil consumers need while working to minimize our environmental footprint and contribute to the well-being of the communities in which we operate.

Process

Oil sand is a mixture of bitumen, sand and water. Because it does not flow like conventional crude oil, it must be mined or heated underground before it can be processed. Our oil sands business recovers bitumen through surface mining and steam injection technologies and upgrades it into refinery-ready crude oil products. Suncor produces bitumen in two ways: 1. Surface mining. We use large trucks and shovels to extract the oil sands. Only 20% of all oil sands are close enough to the surface to be mined. The reclamation process begins as soon as mining operations are completed. 2. In Situ. Using techniques that are similar to conventional oil production, we inject steam into the reservoir to heat the bitumen so it can be pumped to the surface. Suncor extracts and upgrades bitumen using the following process: Hot water is used to separate the bitumen from the sands. This step is called extraction and is not required for in situ bitumen. Bitumen is heated and sent to drums where excess carbon (in the form of petroleum coke) is removed. The superheated hydrocarbon vapours from the coke drums are sent to fractionators where vapour condenses into naphtha, kerosene and gas oil. The end product is synthetic crude oil. It is shipped by underground pipelines to refineries across North America to be refined into jet fuels, gasoline and other petroleum products.

Upgrading
Suncors Upgrading operations process bitumen into higher-value synthetic crude oil and diesel fuel using two upgraders at its oil sands site in Fort McMurray. A third upgrader, jointly owned with Total E&P Canada, is under construction. Suncor also operates upgrading assets at its Edmonton refinery. The third upgrader, known as Voyageur, will add 200,000 barrels per day of upgraded product capacity including premium synthetic crude oil, ultra low sulphur diesel and low sulphur diluent. The new project will feature new technologies that will enable our business to grow while also minimizing the impacts of our growth on the environment and our communities.

Air quality. Project plans target approximately $800 million to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions from our third upgrader.

Water. We plan to invest $225 million to improve water management. As a result, we did not seek an increase in our Athabasca River water licence for the new upgrader. Housing. Temporary construction workers will be housed in camps to reduce pressure on Fort McMurray's short-term housing market. Roads. An interchange on Highway 63, which opened in 2008, connects the new upgrader site with Suncor's existing operations while allowing safe traffic flow on the highway.

Mining

The Millennium site, located near Fort McMurray in northern Alberta, is the focus of Suncors current oil sands mining operations. Suncor also has the North Steepbank, Fort Hills and Voyageur South mining leases. Suncor and Total will focus on jointly developing the Fort Hills and Joslyn oil sands mining projects. Suncor holds a 40.8% interest in the Suncor-operated Fort Hills Oil Sands Project, currently in development with partners Total and Teck Resources Ltd. It is estimated to contain more than four billion barrels of bitumen resource. Suncor also holds a 36.75% interest in the Total-operated Joslyn mining project, which is expected to have a production capacity of 100,000 barrels per day.

Voyageur South is a longer-term project to extend Suncor's mining operations. It is expected to produce 120,000 barrels per day of bitumen during its estimated 40-year operational life. These growth projects are projected to produce a reliable, long-term energy supply while leveraging technology to minimize environmental and social impacts of resource development in the Athabasca region.

In Situ
Approximately 80% of Canada's oil sands are too deep to mine and must be tapped using in situ production, which is similar to conventional oil production. Increased in situ production is a key part of Suncor's plans to increase bitumen supply while reducing costs and our impact on the environment. At MacKay River and Firebag (named after the traditional bags Aboriginal Peoples once used to carry fire-starting flints), Suncor uses steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD): Parallel pairs of horizontal wells are drilled: one for steam injection and one for oil recovery. Recovered bitumen is sent by pipeline to our upgrading facility. MacKay River began producing oil in 2002, while Firebag stages 1 and 2 began producing oil in 2004 and 2006 respectively. Suncors growth plan includes the development of Firebag stage 3 through 6, as well as the development of a second stage of the MacKay River in situ project.

In situ development has important benefits: Resource access. In situ technology opens up the potential to recover large reserves that can't be reached economically by traditional mining methods. An independent evaluation of Suncor's in situ leases estimates recoverable resources with a potential to produce about nine billion barrels of crude oil. Staged growth. In situ technology has the advantage of being well-suited to development in smaller increments, making costs and schedules more manageable. Reduced environmental footprint. MacKay River and Firebag use recycled water in a closed system for steam generation. No additional surface or groundwater is required and no tailings ponds are created. In situ development disturbs only about 15% of the surface land in the development area. Potential for lower costs. In situ technology is a proven, but relatively young, technology. As Suncor gains experience with operating MacKay River and Firebag, and

as we continue to invest in research and development, we believe there is potential to reduce the costs of recovery.

In Situ Technology
In situ development uses horizontal wells to reach the oil sands ore. The top well injects steam to heat the reservoir, allowing the bitumen to flow to the lower well where it is collected and piped to upgrading facilities.

Monthly Oil Sands Production

On a monthly basis, Suncor Energy reports production numbers from its oil sands operation in order to provide stakeholders with a more timely review of operational performance. These numbers include upgraded sweet and sour synthetic crude oil and diesel, as well as nonupgraded bitumen sold directly to the market, from all Suncor-operated facilities. They do not include Suncors proportionate production share from the Syncrude joint venture. These numbers are preliminary and subject to adjustment. Monthly totals may differ from the year-to-date total due to rounding, the impact of sales and changes in inventory. Quarterly Production volumes will be confirmed in Suncors quarterly reports to shareholders.

Innovative Technologies

For decades, the oil sands were considered too expensive to develop on a broad scale. But technological advances in the 1990s improved energy efficiency, reduced operating costs and enhanced environmental performance. Suncor is a pioneer of technological innovation building a new industry from the oil sands that many said could not be developed economically. And we're proud of our track record of innovation. Our ability to meet past challenges gives us the confidence to meet the challenges we face today. Suncor continues to innovate: Carbon capture and storage. Suncor is a leading participant in the Integrated CONetwork (ICON), a group of 19 companies developing a framework for large-scale application of carbon capture and storage technology. Tailings management. We're hard at work to accelerate the reclamation of our oil sands tailings ponds a by-product of the mining and extraction process. Suncor has developed a new approach to tailings management, which promises to help accelerate tailing ponds reclamation. Zero Liquid Discharge. Suncor uses a zero liquid discharge process at our MacKay River in situ facility to achieve maximum water reuse by recovering waste water from produced bitumen. Geothermal energy. Tapping geothermal energy could provide a low-emissions alternative to natural gas. We're working with industry to explore this option.
