INTRODUCTION
Performance management is an ongoing, continuous process of communicating and clarifying job responsibilities, priorities and performance expectations in order to ensure mutual understanding between supervisor and employee. It is a philosophy which values and encourages employee development through a style of management which provides frequent feedback and fosters teamwork. It emphasizes communication and focuses on adding value to the organization by promoting improved job performance and encouraging skill development. Performance Management involves clarifying the job duties, defining performance standards, and documenting, evaluating and discussing performance with each employee. Armstrong and Baron (1998) defined Performance Management as; a process which contributes to the effective management of individuals and teams in order to achieve high levels of organisational performance. As such, it establishes shared understanding about what is to be achieved and an approach to leading and developing people which will ensure that it is achieved.

CONCLUSION
In a nutshell it can be concluded that rewarding and appreciating your employees' efforts ensures that the level of their performance and consequently the performance of your business is not compromised. It ensures optimum productivity, performance and maximum profitability. Evaluating and rating the performance of your employees on an individual basis is essential. This gives them a clear picture of where they presently stand, areas that they need to work on and what they are good at. This way, they can focus more on their weaknesses and work to strengthen those areas. The mere making of plans alone will not help you to run your business successfully. You must also focus on the appropriate ways to get business tasks done. One way of doing this efficiently is to involve your employees in the planning process. This will not only boost their morale and confidence, but also help you avoid any communication gaps in the process.
