Queens Visit to Ballymoney 1953 Princess Elizabeth ascended to the throne as Queen Elizabeth II on 6th February 1952 and was crowned on 2nd June 1953.

Born on 21st April 1926 Princess Elizabeth of York was not immediate Heir to the throne, in fact she was third in line of succession after her uncle Edward, Prince of Wales and her father, The Duke of York. After the death of her Grandfather, her uncle Edward ascended to the throne, however this was to be short lived as he decided to abdicate to marry Mrs Wallis Simpson. Her father, the Duke of York ascended leaving Elizabeth the next in line and the spotlight of increasing media attention.
In 1952 while on tour of the Commonwealth Elizabeth learned of the death of her Father and her own accession to the throne. The Coronation took place in Westminster Abbey on the 2nd June 1953. Afterwards the now Queen Elizabeth began a tour of the UK. It is during this time that the Queen visited Ballymoney. For half an hour, on the 3rd July 1953 the picturesque town of Ballymoney in the North of Antrim ground to a standstill and became the focus of media attention. The Royal train, which coincidentally was driven by a Ballymoney man, pulled into the small railway station and the Queen along with her husband the Duke of Edinburgh stepped out. They were greeted by thousands of North Antrim people. Children screamed and adults waved and cheered as the Queen made her way along the crowd meeting the people in the packed station yard, where every space and possible vantage point was filled. Mrs Grace Leslie, of Leslie Hill, presented her majesty with the Queens Book which traced her links back to the Ancient Kings of Dalriada. However brief the visit was it was a very memorable part of the Royal couples coronation tour of Northern Ireland.
