Official programme

Welcome to the Games

Welcome to the fourth prestigious St Thomass Community Games - a year of sporting excellence and civic pride. It is wonderful to see the community working together to make these games possible in a year where sports and communities are so important with the Olympic and Paralympic Games just around the corner. This years St Thomass Community Games will be taking place at the same time that the Olympic torch passes through Dudley on June 30, and actually through the St Thomass ward itself. Our torch bearers Preston Baynham-Hughes, Dominick Cunningham, Ceri Davies, Gavin Ellis, Ross Ensor, Michael Galloway, John Glover, Megan Hems, Ben Hudson, Dominic MacGowan, Chris Platts, Rebecca Port, Becky Robinson, Dennis Sanders, Rita Vanes, Jackie Webb, Dave White and Nicki Yates will be playing their part in this historic occasion when they carry the torch through Dudley on its way to London for the start of the Olympics. And while our own sporting talent showcase their abilities in a range of local events and activities, our boroughs sporting hopefuls Helen Scott, Kristian Thomas, Jessican Varnish and Jordanne Whiley will be competing for medals in the Olympic and Paralympic Games. This summer gives our local sporting stars that excellence to aim for and a once in a life time opportunity to share in the national and global inspiration. Our own games, which are already nationally acclaimed, are also an opportunity to highlight and celebrate our communities and volunteers who make these events possible. This is possibly our most ambitious games since they were launched in 2006 and a once in a life time opportunity to be part of something truly inspirational. On behalf of the St Thomass Community Games Organising Committee thank you for your support and participation in these events and building on the success of previous years - be proud of being part of something very special. Councillor Shaukat Ali Chairman, St Thomass Community Games Organising Committee

2. Stick with it
Try to keep your challenge up for at least 4 weeks so that you see the benefits - youll have more energy, be more cheerful and relaxed, have more confidence and look good. The longer you keep your challenge up the better! We all find it difficult to stay motivated sometimes, but the more people who get involved, the easier it is. Motivational Tip Have a challenge buddy - whenever you are lacking motivation help each other to feel motivated again. 3. Celebrate and share your success Sport teaches us how to learn from our setbacks and celebrate our successes. Completing a challenge is something to be proud of - so celebrate! While youre feeling good, why not sign up for another challenge? Reward Yourself Tip Do something fun when you finish your challenge, like treat yourself to your favourite magazine, invite friends round, listen to music, or play your favourite game. Make it healthy! - dont spoil all the hard work youve been doing by overeating on chocolate and crisps! Come and visit the Public Health stand at the Opening Ceremony and learn more about how to stay fit and healthy whilst having FUN! Tell us about your challenge and we will enter you into out Olympic competition with the chance to win some great prizes!

1. Choose your challenge

Make sure its realistic and achievable... which will also help make sure its fun. If its too big, you might find it hard to keep going because it will take too much time and energy to make it happen. Challenges could include: Eat an extra piece of fruit or portion of vegetables each day Do an extra 10 minutes of physical activity each day Walk to school one more time every week Try a new vegetable each week for the next 4 weeks Do a new activity with your family or friends Turn off the TV for hour and do something together with your family or friends Drink an extra glass of water each day Eat breakfast more often Spend less on snacks and treat yourself to a magazine or a trip to the cinema Have a go at a new sport Do something to help a family member or friend e.g. wash the car, help with the shopping Find out where your nearest green space is and go for a walk Top challenge tips Before you make a decision, ask yourself: Why are you doing it? - to feel good, help others etc. When will you do it? - make sure you have enough time. Who are you going to do it with? - on your own or do you need someones help?
