University of Central Florida presents first ever Social Media course Created by Public Relations Professor Ryan C. Sheehy ORLANDO, FLA.- ( December 8, 2011)- Coming in the fall semester of 2012. University of Central Floridas Nicholson School of Communication is pleased to inform all that they have finally created a course dedicated to teaching students the importance of social media in todays society and its role in mass communications. Everywhere you look people are constantly communicating with others electronically or threw the internet. All of this technology happened so fast that no one even stops to think of the who, what, where, when, and whys about social media. This course has been created to answer all of those questions. Some young people dont even know a life without social media and Professor Sheehy intends on teaching the students all there is to know about this relatively new form of mass communication. The instructor will review the following: basic concepts and theories, the history and evolution of social media, the current landscape, popular applications, its impact on journalism, advertising and public relations as well as ethical and the law. My main goal in creating this course at UCF is to teach my students about the history and importance of social media. I also want educate them on how fortunate they are to be able to have it in their choice of field, said Professor Ryan C. Sheehy. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to understand social media terminology and core concepts, identify how mass communication theories apply to social media, understand the history and evolution of social media, identify key figures and innovators, etc.

This MMC course will be worth 3 credit hours for all communication majors. The instructor will provide a syllabus explaining all of the grading procedures, materials needed, and a course schedule on the first day of class. It is important for all communication major students to learn how to use all of the many social media sites available. Being educated on it will give the students an advantage when applying for any job. University of Central Florida and the Nicholson School of Communication welcome all communication majors to join its new mass communications course. Thanks to professor Ryan C. Sheehy for being responsible for setting this course in motion and giving the students a chance for a far better understanding of social media.
