(Words from the Dictionary of American Regional English) Summary (150 to 300 words) This article is about a dictionary that contains American regional English words. The DARE is an ambitious project because it has taken a half century of studying jibjabbing. The DARE incorporates 60,000 entries, most of them based on thousands of interviews to local people from Hawaii to Maine. The researchers asked to these people 1600 vocabulary questions. They showed them pictures of indigenous flora and fauna to get the natives words of each picture. And also, they did common activities as interact with their music and just plain chat. Another rich source of words, were the newspapers, diaries, billboards and others, editors have searched thoroughly and they have a database of each word. Often, people of US think that they speak global English, but some words wouldnt be understood in other places, that is the reason of the DARE. This dictionary has all kind of words. For example, potluck means a dinner in a bowl in upstate New York or wampus refers to real creatures such a wild horse. Also, the DARE is connect to social American history, terms used in private circles of different cultures were recollected and added. For example, waistline party mentioned in African American circles. In recent years, the impact of mass culture has been homogenizing the people, and some words have fallen out of favor. The author mentioned what makes for better a conversation is using jib-jab. Also, he criticizes that American language has become duller notwithstanding, new words spring up all the time.

I think this article about the DARE is very important because the dialects are part of each culture and they are source of many words. The DARE has various topics from social occasions, food, creatures and others. To keep alive one indigenous word is hard, thats the reason why the DARE took around 50 years, but it was an ambitious project, and now the outcome is an incredible dictionary that contains 60,000 entries. Its true that researches had to make a hard work in many places. They made interviews to locals and asked vocabulary questions, flashed pictures, interacted with its own music and just plain chat. And also, editors scoured different written sources like newspapers and diaries. But, at the end, they got a huge jib-jab database and these words wont fall out of favor. Now, words cant disappear as easily as before. I agree new words spring up all the time, as the author mentioned in the article, but there is one problem that stops it. The homogenizing impact of mass culture, and why it is stronger than years ago? We heard the same words in TV shows and Internet and we repeat them. For example, a long sandwich is called of different ways torpedogrinder-hoagie but now, some people just call it long sandwich. I think a rich jib-jab makes funny a conversation and if I heard weird words, I wouldnt understand but Ill interact with the other person to get the meaning.
