Five-Frame

Fun!

Directions: Cut and laminate the strips and talking bubbles. Put the strips in a math bin along with numeral cubes {that have the numbers o-5 on the sides} and unifex cubes or counters for the students to use to cover the white squares. Also place the talking bubbles in the math bin so students have a reference for how they should be talking. (The purpose of this math bin is for students to understand and verbalize the different ways you can make five.)

Students should play this game in pairs. Each player should pick one color of unifex cubes or counters to use to cover their squares throughout the game. The goal is to fill up as many five frames as possible. FOr every five frame you fill, you earn one point. The player who fills up the most five frames, WINS!

The way you fill up a five frame is by rolling the numeral cube and covering all of the white squares. If you roll a 3,

you cover up three white squares and then say, I have three, I need two more to get to five. In order to fill

this five frame, students MUST then roll a 2. (You cant roll a one and then another one.) Players take turns rolling would take another five frame out and place four counters or unifex cubes on that frame. They then say, I have four, I need one more to make five. Player number one now gets to roll. If player number one rolls a ONE, they makes five.

the numeral cube attempting to fill a five frame. Lets say in the same example the second player rolls a four. They

can complete the five frame their friend started and earn a point. They must then say, I have one: four and one

I have included a recording sheet for students to use during this activity. When students fill up a five frame they red and one square yellow.)

should color in the number combination in two different colors.. (Player number one could have colored in four squares ((This game was inspired by Debbie Dillers game from Math Work Stations))
