Recensie verscheen maandag10 oktober in De Gelderlander: Oer-Hollands volksfeest bij Nick & Simon Vorig jaar klonk er nog Roxanne van The Police, dit jaar zong het Gelredome mee met Rosanne. Symphonica in Rosso was nog nooit zo oer-Hollands. Nick & Simon weten drie uur lang te boeien, ook al is hun muziek duidelijk niet gemaakt voor een stadion. Arnhem kleurt rood zaterdagavond. Het is Nick & Simon gelukt om het Gelredome maar liefst vier keer uit te verkopen. In totaal bezoeken straks meer dan 120.000 mensen de Symphonica In Rosso-concerten. De concertreeks is eindelijk weer oerHollands na drie achtereenvolgende jaren met internationale sterren. Respectievelijk Lionel Richie, Diana Ross en Sting vulden de afgelopen jaren het Arnhemse stadion. Maar na het Roxanne van Sting klinkt er nu Rosanne. Veel Hollandser dan Nick & Simon bestaat haast niet. En veel populairder lijkt ook niet te kunnen. Jong en oud is op het concert afgekomen, aan het verzoek om iets roods aan te trekken is door velen gehoor gegeven. Er wordt spontaan meegeklapt, enthousiast meegezongen en geregeld staat het publiek op de banken van blijdschap. Het decor is magistraal, rood natuurlijk, met een constructie die vanaf het podium langs bijna het hele dak golft. Over een soort drietand kunnen de twee Volendammers het publiek in. Het orkest is groot, luid en soms op het bombastische af. Je kunt moeilijk zeggen dat 120.000 Nick & Simon-fans het allemaal verkeerd horen en niemand zal dan ook teleurgesteld zijn vertrokken na afloop. Toch valt er genoeg aan te merken op het concert. Veel van de nummers en ook de stem van Simon Keizer zijn te dun voor een stadion, ook in een nieuw strijkersarrangement. Dat valt gelijk op als de 3Js spelen of wanneer Het Regent Zonnestralen van Acda en de Munnik klinkt, plots komt er dan twee keer zoveel pit in het concert. De muziek van Nick & Simon mist vaak een climax, vocaal lekker uithalen zit er bijna nooit in. De hoofdpersonen van de avond komen juist in de rustiger nummers als Blind Voor Mijn

Ogen, Hoe Lang? en Pak Maar Mn Hand veel beter uit de verf. Daarnaast is alles uitgedacht, waar te gaan staan, wat te zeggen, het draaiboek is heel strak, veel ruimte voor spontaniteit is er niet. Geregeld duiken Nick & Simon op verschillende plekken in de zaal op. De laatste nummers, De Soldaat, Rosanne en Pak Maar Mn Hand worden achterin de zaal op een klein podium gespeeld. Lippen Op De Mijne, met een kus voor Kees Tol in het publiek, en Steeds Weer vormen de toegift. Het is knap hoe Nick & Simon overeind blijven in het Gelredome. De fans kunnen voldaan naar huis en wie het duo zorgvuldig mijdt, was ook door dit concert niet bekeerd. Iedereen tevreden. Alleen Nick & Simon zitten met een probleem. Want hoe moeten ze dit ooit nog overtreffen? I went to a concert called Symphonica in Rosso by Nick and Simon on the 16 th of October last year, 2011. The concert took place in a football stadium, called Het Gelredome in Arnhem. The stage image was amazing. On the right side of the stage the orchestra was settled and the singers, Nick and Simon, were everywhere on the stage and in the total area. They used modern media during the concert. Like, sometimes there were short movies and the background on the stage was a moving diagram. They had different parts, each part they play numbers of a certain group. The voice of Holland part, in which they both sang a song with Pearl Jozefzoon. The part of the American Dream in which they sang Hotel California, Jailhouse Rock and Listen To The music, the part of the 3Js in which they sang songs with the 3Js and a part with duets with Thomas Acda and Paul de Munnik. During the concert they did several songs different than the original songs, like repeat the refrain and improvise a lot of things. The concert can be classify into the music genre Nederlandstalige muziek, because almost every song the sang was in Dutch, except from the American Dream part ( English songs) and the duets with Pearl Jozefzoon (Simon and Pearl sang in English, Nick and Pearl sang in Italian). You can classify this genre into Palingsound. Palingsound is a word that we use to express a classic, typical Dutch style in the pop music, which is only being made in Volendam. I mostly recognise the typical Dutch thing, because their songs are typical Dutch songs. The different numbers they sang, do not have any connection with each other, all the songs have their own main subject. Although, almost every songs is about love. All their songs tell a story. This is express in the lyrics and mostly in the music (happy music by a happy song, slow, dramatic music by a more serious song). The basic function of the concert was to amuse the people who came to their concert. I felt involved with the music, because I really like the songs and I can feel the lyrics. During the concert there was communication between them and us ( the audience). Like they let us sing some parts of the songs and ask us questions. The stage image definitely had a role in the performance. Like I said before, the background was a moving diagram. For example when there was a song about being in love (butterflies), there were flying butterflies on the background diagram. When I went to the concert, I was expecting a great show with songs of their (then) new album and old known, familiar songs. I did go to a concert of them before so I knew a bit what I could expected. It was even a greater show then I expected! I really enjoyed it.

The thing that had made the most impression on me was when Simon sang the song Vaderdag. He wrote and sang this song for his dad, who died when Simon was 15 year. When he sang this song, the whole area was quiet and took out their lighters or mobile phones. The show was absolutely amazing! I am a big fan of Nick and Simon and I know almost all of their songs behead so I could sing-along with them. And that was exactly what we did. This was, I think, the biggest concert I have ever been to so it made a big impression on me. The place the concert was held was perfect for this concert. Everything was well organized and everything went very well, without any troubles. A typical Symphonica in Rosso thing is the colour red. This is why there were a lot of people wearing red.
