B. Introduction:
Teachers Activities Students Activities

Okay, now class, get a piece of paper together with your pencil. After getting your paper and pencil, go and find a partner for our first activity this day. Does every one of you have a partner now? Now, our activity for today will be called Paint Me What I Thank For. Does anyone of you have an idea of how this activity is done? Thats correct. Each of you will be interviewed by your partner for two minutes answering the question: What are you thankful for? After the both of you have shared your answers, you will then have to draw the things that your partner had told you in the piece of paper that I told you to get. I will be giving you ten minutes to finish your interview and drawing. Is the direction clear?

(Students will comply with the teachers directions: firstly, get their paper and pencil then find a classmate to be their partner.) Students in chorus: Yes, Maam.

Maybe, we will draw things that our partners have and to which they are grateful about.

Students in chorus: Yes, Maam.

(Each pair will face each other and start the interview. After gathering the thoughts of their partner, each student will then draw what theyve heard from their partner.)

Now, who would like to show us what he/she had drew and explain whats on it.

I drew a happy family because my partner said that shes thankful for giving her the best family shed ever have.

Very good to the both of you. Who else would like to share? My partner said that hes thankful about today so I drew a sun that is smiling. He said that, not everyone has been given the opportunity to continue living so hes thankful for this day. What youve just shared is really inspiring.

D. Raising of a Motive Question:

Teachers Activities Students Activities

Does someone have to give up when he/she had failed?

No, Maam.

If you strongly believe that man should not lose his/her hope when he/she fails and since this poem could be talking about it, what then will we find out in this poem?

Maybe, we will find out the reasons why we should not give up.

E. Unlocking Difficulties:
Teachers Activities Students Activities

Before we proceed in reading and studying our poem for this day, let us provide the meaning of these unfamiliar words that I will show you. (Teacher will post the list of unfamiliar words on the upper part of the board. At the bottom of these, the teacher will post words which are synonymous with the unfamiliar words above.) Unfamiliar words: Reminisce Manna Fondly Triumphed Opportunity

Their synonyms: (Should be jumbled) Recall Gift Lovingly Won Chance

Let us read first the list of unfamiliar words and then followed by the list of words that will help us determine the meaning of each unfamiliar word.

(Students will start reading the two sets of words.)

To be able to know what does each unfamiliar word means, I will read a sentence containing each unfamiliar word and tell me the word synonymous to it from the second list of words. Am I understood?

Students in chorus: Yes, Maam.

My sentence for the word reminisce is: I tried to reminisce what had happened yesterday in the party. What do you think does the word reminisce means? Choose a word that will define it from the second set. Thats right. My sentence for the word manna is: My mothers manna for me is a gold necklace. What do you think does the word manna means? Choose a word that will define it from the second set. It seems like the word manna means gift. Reminisce could mean recall.

Thats correct. My sentence for the word fondly is: The mother fondly hugs her new-born son. What do you think does the word fondly means? Choose a word that will define it from the second set. You guess it right. My sentence for the word triumphed is: We have successfully triumphed against the other team in basketball. What do you think does the word triumphed means? Choose a word that will define it from the second set. Very good.

Fondly means lovingly.

It looks like the word triumphed means won.

My sentence for the last word opportunity is: I was given the opportunity to represent our class on the contest, not everyone could have that.

What do you think does the word opportunity means? Choose a word that will define it from the second set.

I think, opportunity is synonymous to the word chance.

Your answer is correct.

Now that we know the meaning of the unfamiliar words that can be found in the poem, let us proceed.

F. First Reading of the Poem

Teachers Activity

(The Teacher will be the one to read the poem first. The students will listen attentively to their teacher.) I will be the one to read the poem first so that, when its your turn, youll avoid pronouncing some words incorrectly. Okay, listen and try to understand the message of the poem.

What Is Good About Today? By: E.M. Dallo What is good about today is that

Today you can fondly remember yesterday, Happily reminisce about glorious past. With Dutch courage you bravely faced challenges And you triumphed through them all.

What is good about today is that

You need not have cold feet for all the tomorrows, For sorrows which you think will certainly break your heart, Problems that you think have no answers Will definitely be solved, no matter how difficult.

What is good about today is that

With animal spirits you can boldly face challenges, Easily plan for tomorrow, and seek opportunities, For tomorrow is like a deeply hidden treasure, That you must patiently search for to fulfill your dreams.

What is good about today is that You can enjoy life and all the happiness it brings, Merrily gather all the manna from heaven, Appreciate the beauty and wonder of life itself And thank God for what is good about Today.

G. Intellectual Discussion
Teachers Activities Students Activities

Earlier, there were questions raise that we tried to answer. Now that I have read the poem, what did you find out from the poem?

I think, one of the messages of the poem is that, we should not keep grudges from our broken past and should seize the day, life to the fullest.

That is a wonderful reflection of the poem. I think, we should not be afraid of falling because Who else would want to add something? all of us fall. We should not fear the challenges hence, we should be optimistic in overcoming them. Very well said. So, based on the poem, when No, because what had happened was already done. a man fails, does he have to give up? We could not undo it, but we can still make our future better if only well live with God today and if well believe in ourselves. Giving up means, cutting the line for the better future.

H. Second Reading of the Poem

Students Activities

(The students will now start reading the poem in chorus. )

I. Aesthetic Discussion
Teachers Activities Students Activities

Now that youve read the poem, whats your favorite line of it? And why?

I love the line: Problems that you think have no answers Will definitely be solved, no matter how difficult. It tells me not to worry much about things because everything will be okay.

The line: Today you can fondly remember yesterday, Happily reminisce about glorious past. Tells that Im here because Ive surpassed the past, the same thing that I should do to make it to the future.

All of you had picked the best lines. And its good that you learn to like the lines and the poem itself.

J. Valuing
Teachers Activities Students Activities

From the poem, what do you think is the main purpose or the message of the poem as a whole?

For me, it says that, we are lucky to live in the present so we have to be grateful about it through living happily and positively.

The poem teaches me to stop thinking of that past so that youll be able to enjoy the present. And be able to have the best future. I must say that the poem had really touched your lives. It is good that youre able to decode and appreciate the purpose of the poem.

K. Grammar Lesson
Teachers Activities Students Activities

From the poem, you have encountered the words: fondly, happily, bravely, and boldly. To what part of speech do these words fall into?

These words fall into the group of adverb.

Thats right. They are adverbs. An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Adverbs are words that help us add details to sentences and express the exact meaning of what we want to say.

Like adjectives, adverbs have three degrees of comparison: positive, comparative and superlative. Regular adverbs use er added to the comparative degree and est to the superlative degree after one-syllable words. Examples are fast, faster fastest and soon, sooner and soonest. Can you give another example? Late, later and latest could be an example.

In some adverbs ending in ly, we use the intensifier ,more or less for the comparative

degree and , most or least for the superlative degree. Examples are easily, more easily , most easily and rapidly, less rapidly and least rapidly. Can someone give another example?

Patiently, more patiently and most patiently are part of the group too.

Some irregular adverbs use neither suffixes nor intensifiers. They just simply change their form. Examples are good, better, best and well better best. Can you add another example for this group? Badly, worse, worst and much more and most belong here too.

IV. Homework
Teachers Activities Students Activities
