POLICY It is the policy of the Crescent Greenwood Limited to provide a healthy environment for all employees and to encourage a healthy lifestyle to help reduc e health risks. Employees who do not smoke MUST not be exposed to tobacco smoke. To this end, one goal should be to become totally non-smoking at Site. 2. SCOPE AND DEFINITION 2.1 The association between smoking and a number of diseases has been recogn ized for many years. These diseases include lung cancer, chronic bronchitis, hyp ertension, ischaemic heart disease, peptic ulcer and cancers of the mouth, throa t, esophagus and bladder. There is now firm evidence that those exposed to passiv e smoking are at risk of developing some of these diseases. Passive Smoking can be defined as inhaling other peoples smoke, both mainstream and sidestream. Mainstre am smoke is the smoke the smoker breathes in and then exhales. Sidestream smoke is released from the smouldering tip of the cigarette and contains many harmful/ substances e.g. tar, polycyclic monocarbons, nitrosamines and carbon monoxide, i n higher concentrations than mainstream smoke. It is recognized that it is difficult to implement the policy in one sta ge. Nevertheless, the aim MUST be restricted to specific locations and where pra cticable banned from common areas. E.g. corridors, lecture rooms, dinning rooms etc. 3. BENEFITS OF HAVING A NON-SMOKING POLICY : 3.1 The health benefits from not smoking are very significant and far reachi ng. Briefly they include reduced incidence of several types of cancer, ischaemic heart diseases and chronic bronchitis. 3.2 Reduced sickness. Non-smokers are less likely to be absent from work due to sickness than smokers. 3.3 Reduced fire risk. A significant percentage of fires in industrial premi ses arise from smoking materials providing the ignition source. 3.4 Lower ventilation and air conditioning costs. 3.5 Improved performance, recognizing 3.1 and 3.2 and with freedom from smok ing breaks, non-smokers are better placed to perform to the best of their abilit ies. 3.6 Fewer accidents accident rate among smokers is higher than that of non-s mokers. 3.7 Lower risk of losing key personnel through premature ill health, retirem ent or death. 3.8 Provides a more pleasant and comfortable working environment.
