NASA SAFETY SYSTEM STEERS PILOTS CLEAR OF CLOSE CALLS

Overcrowded airports mean overcrowded runways, taxiways and

ramps. On-the-ground collisions at the nation's airports are
occurring more frequently, but NASA engineers have developed a way
to keep aircraft on track and away from dangerous encounters.

It is an advanced cockpit display system, developed at NASA's

Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA. The Runway Incursion
Prevention System, or RIPS, would give pilots and air traffic
controllers an early warning if another plane or ground vehicle is
about to intrude onto the runway.

Note To Editors: NASA and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport

plan to offer media tours of the NASA 757 aircraft and its
advanced cockpit display systems late Wednesday afternoon, Oct.
25, at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. Interested media
should arrive at American Airlines Hangar #2 (W. Airfield Dr. and
21st St.) in time for a 5:30 p.m. briefing. A video news release,
which includes simulator, flight test and airport operations
footage and pilot interviews, is available. It is also scheduled
to air on NASA Video file Oct. 24 and 25.

NASA ADMINISTRATOR REACTS TO FY 2001 APPROPRIATION

The following is a statement by NASA Administrator Daniel S.

Goldin concerning the
FY 2001 VA-HUD-Independent Agencies Appropriations Bill.

"The President has received from the Congress the FY 2001 VA-HUD-
Independent Agencies appropriations bill, and is expected to sign
the measure in the near future.

"Thanks to the efforts of key members of the House and Senate, and
with the support of the Administration, this measure provides an
excellent budget for NASA. Our supporters in the Congress faced
considerable difficulties in reaching this outcome, and we should
all be very grateful for their championing of the Nation's civil
space and aeronautics program."
