Brothers and sisters, I have good news: We will see the kingdom of Godhere on earth. We often hold an otherworldly image of Gods kingdomone that is distant and far-offor one that we will only experience after death. But the truth is, the kingdom is God is something that we will see here on earthand whats more, we do see it. The trouble is, sometimes we dont expect to see it or recognize it when we do. And this is one reason that Jesus speaks to us in parables. They give us an idea of what to expect in terms of Gods kingdomand how to recognize it when it might be right in front of us. This morning we read two parables: the parable of the sower and the parable of the mustard seed. For me, this morning, the parable of the mustard seed especially provides a powerful image of the kingdom of God. Most of us are very familiar with the traditional teachings of this parable: the smallest seed in the world grows into the largest garden plant, and offers relief from the elements. From this, we assume that the Kingdom of God starts off small, but will grow into something big...something obvioussomething glorioussomething that will comfort and care for usand we are waiting for that to happen. This might be a familiar take on this parable, but there is an alternative interpretation that might not be so familiar. This interpretation looks at the characteristics of the mustard plant. This interpretation looks at the Kingdom of God as less glorious and more intrusiveas offering less relief and comfort...but hope and new ways to live. When Jesus told this parable, his disciples were familiar with the mustard seed, but not many of us are. The mustard plant is not considered a garden plant. Rather, its a wild bush found in uncultivated fields. A wild mustard plant grows so large that it chokes out the plants around it. It leaves cultivated gardens useless. Its dangerous. Its a nuisance to farmers seeking to live off the land.

The kingdom of God is like a mustard seed. Its a nuisance. Its dangerous. Its invasive. It leaves little space for other things to grow around it. It takes over. This interpretation of the parable challenges us and invites us to live differently because we know what the kingdom of God is like. The kingdom of God is like a mustard seed. It creeps into unexpected parts of our wellmanicured lives. The kingdom of God is like a mustard seed. It takes root and grows so large that there is little room left for anything else to flourish. The kingdom of God is like a mustard seed. Its dangerous. As it grows, it redirects our attention from the things the world tells us are important, to the things that actually are important. Its dangerous because as it grows, it shifts our focus from what the world wants us to see, and allows us to recognize God in our midst. Its dangerous because as it grows, everything else gets pushed to the side, so that we might fully participate in Gods kingdom. And Gods kingdom is based on compassion, justice, peace, hope, wholeness, and love. Every time we see something or someone that exudes Gods love, we see Gods kingdom. Every time we see God in our midst through a kind embrace, an act of compassion, justice served, peace made, hope shared, or love expressedwe see Gods kingdom. Brothers and sisters, we see Gods kingdom on earth everydayeven if we might not be looking for itor even when we might be looking for something we think is more important. Gods kingdom is not so far off. Its not so distant. It is here among us, growing. And thanks be to God for that. Amen.

En el nombre del Creador, Sustentador, y Redentor, Amen. Hermanos y hermanas, les tengo buenas nuevas: veremos el reino de Diosaqu en la tierra. A menudo tenemos una imagen que el reino de Dios es de otro mundoun imagen que es distante y lejoso uno que solamente experimentramos despus el muerto. Pero la verdad es, el reino de Dios es algo que veremos aqu en la tierray lo que es mas, lo vemos. La problema es, de vez en cuando no tenemos la expectativa a verlo o reconocerlo cuando lo vemos. Esto es un razn que Jess hblanos en parbolas. Ellos nos dan una idea de qu esperar en trminos del reino de Diosy como podemos reconocerlo cuando podra estar justo en frente de nosotros. Esta maana leemos dos parbolas: la parbola del sembrador y la parbola de la semilla de mostaza. Para mi, esta maana, la parbola de la semilla de mostaza nos provee una imagen poderoso del reino de Dios. La mayora de nosotros estamos familiarizado con las enseanzas tradicional de esta parbola: lo mas pequeo semilla se crece a lo mas grande planta del jardn, luego, se ofrezca descanso de los elementos. De esto, asumimos que el reino de Dios empieza pequeo, pero crecer a algo grandotealgo obvioalgo gloriosoalgo que se dar confort y cuidado a nosotrosy estamos esperando por esto por pasar. Esto podra ser una interpretacin familiar en esta parbola, pero hay una interpretacin alternativa que no podra tan familiar. Esta interpretacin alternativa considera los caractersticas de la planta de mostaza. La interpretacin se considera el reino de Dios que es algo menos gloriosa y mas intrusitacomo algo que no se ofrezca descanso y confortpero esperanza y nuevas maneras a vivir. Cuando Jess comparti esta parbola, sus discpulos supieron las caractersticas de la semilla de mostazapero no muchos de nosotros. La planta de mostaza no es considerado una planta del jardn. Mas bien, es un arbusto silvestre se encuentran en campos sin cultivar. Una planta silvestre de mostaza se crece tan grande que ahoga las plantas a su alrededor. Se deja jardines cultivado intil. Es peligroso. Es una molestia para los agricultores que tratan de vivir de la tierra. El reino de Dios es como un semilla de mostaza. Es una molestia. Es peligroso. Es invasivo. Lo deja poco espacio por otra cosas a crecer de su alrededor. Se toma el relevo. Esta interpretacin de la parbola nos interpela y nos invita a vivir de otra manera porque sabemos como lo que es el reino de Dios. El reino de Dios es como una semilla de mostaza. Se arrastra en partes inesperada de nuestras vidas bien mantenido. El reino de Dios es como una semilla de mostaza. Se echa races y crece tan grande que hay poco espacio por nada mas para florecer. El reino de Dios es como una semilla de mostaza. Es peligrosa. A medida que crece, se vuelve a dirigir nuestra atencin de las cosas que el mundo nos dice que son importantes, a las cosas que realmente son importantes. Es peligrosa porque cuando crece se mueve nuestro

atencin de lo que el mundo quiere que nos ve, y nos permite a reconocer Dios entre nosotros. Es peligroso porque cuando crece todo la de mas, es empujada al lado, para que podemos participar completamente en el reino de Dios. Y el reino de Dios es basado en compasin, justicia, paz, esperanza, plenitud, y amor. Cada vez vemos algo o alguien que emana el amor de Dios, vemos el reino de Dios. Cada ves que vemos Dios entre nosotros a traves de un abrazo, un acto de compasin, justicia servido, paz realizado, esperanza compartido, o amor expresadovemos el reino de Dios. Hermanos y hermanas, vemos el reino de Dios cada dia aqu en el mundoincluso si no estamos buscandoloo incluso cuando podramos estar buscando algo que nos parece mas importante. El reino de Dios no esta tan lejos. No es tan lejano. Es aqu, entre nosotros creciendo. Y gracias a Dios por eso. Amen.
