Lesson Plan EDTECH 541 Dana Fredwell Graphing with technology Introduction:

Students will learn the parts of a graph, how to read a graph and how to build bar graphs and pictographs using excel spreadsheets. Students will print their graphs and present them.

Content Area and Grade or Age Level of Students: Math and College Career Readiness 3rd-5th grade Objectives: Students will be able to name the parts of bar graphs and pictographs. Students will be able to collect data and display it with a drawing. Students will then use Microsoft Excel to build a spreadsheet. Students will use the chart tool to turn their data into a bar graph and a pictograph. Standards Addressed: (Common Core)

CCR1 Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects based on focused questions, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation. 3.MD Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories. Solve one- and two-step how many more and how many less problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs.
Relative Advantage: Students want to work through the process so

they can make a complete and illustrated project using technology. Students will feel accomplished being able to use the same computerbased tools employed by professionals.
Timeline: Four 50-minute periods. Day 1- graph overview and practice reading graphs, Day 2- Brainstorming, data collection, and hand drawn graphs. Day 3- Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet

overview. Day 4- Building spreadsheets and graphs. Materials: Students will need copy of the pictograph directions. Students will also need computers from the mobile computer lab loaded with Microsoft Excel. Grouping Strategies: Students will each have their own computer but this can easily be adapted to work in groups of three or four. Learning Activities: Students will collect class data and label a bar graph anchor chart for future reference. Students will answer questions using bar graphs, and pictographs. Students will come up with their own question and collect data from all of the 3rd-5th grade classes. They will pass around data sheets and other students will use tally marks to fill them in. Students will sketch a rough draft of their bar graph using their collected data and label it. Students will build a spreadsheet entering a header (title), entering column and row headings, enter their data, using the chart wizard to build a bar graph, and then use clip art to build a pictograph. Assessment: Completed bar and pictographs with data and rough drafts attached. Adaptations for Learners with Special Needs: Students can pair up or work in small groups with the teacher while other students are building their spreadsheets.
