The Rehoboth Beach Historical Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging and promoting public knowledge of and participation in the preservation of the history, culture, architecture and special character of Rehoboth Beach.

Our New Exhibit

The Society is proud to announce its upcoming exhibit: SKIMMING THE SURFACE: SURFING, SKIMMING AND FLOATING OFF THE DELMARVA COAST. Featuring vintage surfboards, skim boards, and rubber rafts, the exhibit will examine the evolution of surfing and wave sports in the area. We have vintage long boards from a local surfers, a few photos of surfers from the 60s, and we will be receiving wet suits, fins and other surfing memorabilia. We are in touch with Skip Savage, who owned Surf Shop East here in the area. We are also pleased to announce that we will screen the documentary Waves of Reflection by Will Lucas, which features surfers Bill Wise and Skip Savage. The photos shown here, of Bill Wises Surfer Express and Skip Savage in front of his shop, are as seen in the documentary. We are gathering more items, and if you have anything to contribute to the exhibit, wed like to hear from you. Go through those old photo albums and lend us photos of you hanging ten!

Society Welcomes New Board Members

Steve Elkins & Judy Mellen
Steve Elkins is Executive Director of CAMP Rehoboth, an LGBT Community Service Organization which seeks to build safe and inclusive communities with room for all. In addition to the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society, Steve is a commissioner on the Delaware State Human Relations Commission, a board member of Equality Delaware, and an election official with the City of Rehoboth Beach. Steve is also a member of the chancel choir, the praise team, and the hand bell choir at Epworth United Methodist Church. Steve, and his partner Murray Archibald, have lived in Rehoboth Beach for 20 years. A native New Yorker, Judy has lived in Delaware since 1968 and has been a Rehoboth home owner since 1988. She retired as Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Delaware and remains a very active participant in the ACLU as well as many other community organizations, primarily involving justice, equality and the rights of children.

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE:
Dear Members, 2010 was a great year for the Society and The Rehoboth Museum. The Averys Rest exhibit was a big hit with both locals and out of town visitors and will continue to be open through April 8th of 2011. The annual Beach Ball in August raised over $49,000 net to go towards educational programs and events as well as to day to day operations of the museum. Please mark your calendars: the 2011 Beach Ball is scheduled for Saturday, August 6th. This fall we finally opened the new boardwalk and overlook behind the museum, facing the canal. The funds for this construction were generously made available through grants from the City and the State. And finally, two talented residents, Judy Mellen, and Steve Elkins, consented to be new members of the Board of Directors of the Historical Society. 2011 looks to be another great year for the Society right out of the gate. In the fall of 2010 the museum received a substantial pledge of $50,000 from two local gentlemen who have chosen the opportunity to name the West Exhibit Gallery in memory of their mothers. In addition, these two have acquiesced to allowing this generous pledge to be used as the start of a new matching gift program for the year 2011. Already we have received over $28,000 in pledges for the matching program and will surely meet the match prior to the deadline in December 2011. Thanks to the diligent work of one of our new board members, Linda Darr, the museum started an additional fundraising activity late in 2010. The new semi-oval bench that was constructed on the patio this past year will be adorned with name recognition bricks. There is space for a little over 150 bricks that will be placed on the inside of the bench facing the museum and will have names of individual donors and local businesses. If this might sound interesting to you as an opportunity to donate to the museum and recognize an individual, a family or a local business, please contact the museum as soon as you can make that decision. We already have over 75 of the bricks spoken for and hope to have them installed early this summer. Our Executive Director, Nancy Alexander, has a couple of great exhibits in store for this spring and has already made a lot of progress towards establishing the dates for the openings and planned activities, as well as securing many of the various artifacts to be exhibited. First, Nancy plans to have a textile exhibit and some activities in late April that will entail both a display of various examples and a judged competition with the items coming from many different local residents. Our annual exhibit, which will open in late May, will focus on the history of surfing on the Delmarva Peninsula. This exhibit should attract visitors of all ages due to the fact that there has been an active local surfing community for over 50 years. Nancy has already been involved in conversations and meetings with a variety of sources of information and artifacts. We hope to get the local Surf Riders foundation involved as well as many local businesses, which were started as far back as the sixties to promote the local industry. We have already had many locals and a few former residents volunteer their time, efforts and artifacts towards the exhibit. Averys Rest Exhibit Came to Life at the Museum

The Rehoboth Beach Historical Societys exhibit, Captain John and Sarah Avery: a 17th Century Family on Delawares Frontier, has graced our gallery for nearly a year now. A number of programs have been held to help members and friends better understand how the objects on display would have been used and by whom. In addition to the lecture by Charles Fithian of the Delaware Office of Historical and Cultural Affairs, the museum hosted a Colonial Games Day in July for children. In October, the Society sponsored a trip to the Preservation Forge in Lewes, Delaware, and a trip to the Nanticoke Indian Museum was taken in November. The Rehoboth Beach Museum also partnered with Clear Space Theater to stage a family-friendly interactive experience that introduced visitors to members of the Avery household, including daughter Sarah, a worker on the Averys farm, and the fiery Captain Avery himself. This was a fun and easy way to learn about life in Delaware in the late 1600s. Finally, in February, we hosted a book discussion led by Sherry Chapelle. The group shared reactions to and information about the books A Mercy by Toni Morrison and The Help by Kathryn Stockett. The idea for the discussion came about as a result of research about workers on the Avery family plantation, which included slaves and indentured servants. We hope to have more discussion of books as our exhibits evolve. These programs were sponsored, in part, by the Delaware Humanities Forum.

Textile Day Rounds Out Averys Rest Programming

On a sunny day in December, fans of needlework gathered at the Museum to see demonstrations of textile and needlework techniques. Dolores Andrew, a member of the National Academy of Needlearts, treated those gathered to a reading of a historically accurate but fictional journal of an Englishwoman moving to 17th Century America, bringing her needlework with her. Ann Horsey, a curator from the Delaware Office of Historical and Cultural Affairs displayed Victorian era quilts for the states collection, and members of the Thistledown Fiber Arts Guild demonstrated weaving, spinning, and Bobbin Lace by members Alice Guerrant, Gladys Shaw, Marian Guerrant and Mary Hill. Frances Lukezic presented a summary of the project known as the Plimoth jacket in which an interpretation of a 17th century womens jacket with crewel stitching authentic to the time period was created. All present were enthusiastic and promised to continue to gather to discuss needlearts of all eras.

Fall Luncheon Featured Education and Recognition

Members and friends of the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society gathered at Kings Creek Country Club this past fall to learn about the history of African-Americans on the Delmarva Peninsula and to recognize the City of Rehoboth for the renovation of the citys historic boardwalk. On Saturday, November 13, guest speaker Dr. Clara Small, professor of History at Salisbury University, shared her extensive research on the history of African-Americans on the Delmarva Peninsula. Her article, Abolitionists, Free Blacks, and Runaway Slaves was included in the book, A History of African-Americans on Marylands and Delawares Eastern Shore. Dr. Small graciously gave a copy of her book to the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society. Dr. Smalls lecture was sponsored, in part, by a grant from the Delaware Humanities Forum and by generous matching donations from Burt Dukes, Hal Dukes, Jr., and Butch Emmert. The lecture was given in conjunction with the exhibit Captain John and Sarah Avery, a 17th Century Family on Delawares Frontier which is on display at the Rehoboth Beach Museum through April 8th. The annual Preservation Award was given to the City of Rehoboth Dr. Clara Small with Beach for the RBHS President Paul Kuhns preservation of the historic boardwalk. Extensive repairs were made to the boardwalk, which was first built in the 1880s and which has been rebuilt many times, either due to storms or the Citys decision to upgrade one of its favorite attractions. The mayor and commissioners were each given pieces of the previous boardwalk with plaques commemorating the award. The Society was fortunate to have two Cape Henlopen High School students attend the luncheon. The students were from teacher Sue Comorats advanced placement history class.

Rehoboth Beach Main Street Presents Awards to the Rehoboth Beach Museum
This is the 14th year that Rehoboth Beach Main Street has been awarding area businesses and homes with a yearly ceremony and a plaque, which encourages building, renovating and restoring within preferred resort town designs. The Annual Cottage & Town Awards recognize residential and commercial property owners who contribute to the charm, beauty and ambiance of Rehoboth Beach through preservation/restoration, new construction and landscaping. The aim is to celebrate and thank those who make significant contributions to our community. In the category of Commercial Preservation the committee gave the award to the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society for its very reserved and careful reconsideration of an especially iconic Rehoboth landmark, the Rehoboth Beach Museum most especially given its position at the citys entrance flanking Grove Park and its immediate neighbors. The design committee recognized Bill Bahan, Harvey Waltersdorf, and Paul Kuhns of the Historical Society, who were involved in the design process of the Rehoboth Beach Museum.

Society Receives Third Challenge Pledge

For the third time in as many years, the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society has received a $50,000 challenge pledge. Gifts and pledges of $1,000 or more will be matched up to $50,000. Pledges can be paid over a period of two years. To date, $28,000 has been raised toward this challenge. The Society has successfully met both previous challenges, but it can only do so with your help. Remember, some companies match employee gifts, even those of retirees. If you belong to a civic organization that supports local organizations, please consider helping the Society make a request. Donations will be matched and the community will benefit from your generosity what a wonderful return on your investment! We will be sending out our spring appeal for donations soon. The Rehoboth Beach Museum has a limited number of engraved bricks for sale. The bricks will be placed on the permanent seating wall located directly behind the Museum. Over half of the original 150 bricks have been sold at a cost of $200 per brick, which is 100% tax deductible. The wall is to be completed this summer. The limited edition Museum brick is a wonderful way to celebrate a life, honor a friend or family. New Annual Needlework Exhibit

Inspired by the Museums Textile Day, the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society will host its first annual Needlework Exhibit April 15 through May 8, 2011. Both adults and juniors are eligible to participate, and there are nine categories of needle arts accepted. A certified National Academy of Needlearts judge will award ribbons, but all should feel welcome to submit a needle work. If you are not a needleworker, stop by the exhibit to see the wonderful work submitted. Its a great way to celebrate the Mothers Day weekend.

Society Board of Directors Thanks Docents at a Canalside Gathering

The Board of Directors of the Society hosted the docents at the museum for an end-of-season gathering to thank them for the many hours of volunteer time they have donated. Docents lower the Societys administrative costs, and are the public face of the Society. We are truly fortunate to have these wonderful folks helping the Society. If you are interested in becoming a docent, please call the office at 227-7310. The time commitment is not large and the rewards are great. 9

The United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., is a symbol of the American people and their government, the meeting place of the nation's legislature. The Capitol also houses an important collection of American art, and it is an architectural achievement in its own right. It is a working office building as well as a tourist attraction visited by millions every year. Construction of the U.S. Capitol began in 1793. In November 1800, the U.S. Congress met in the first completed portion, the north wing. In the 1850s, major extensions to the North and South ends of the Capitol were authorized because of the great westward expansion of our nation and the resultant growth of Congress. Since that time, the U.S. Capitol and its stately dome have become international symbols of our representative democracy. The U.S. Capitol Visitor Center is the newest addition to this historic complex. At nearly 580,000 square feet, the Visitor Center is the largest project in the Capitol's more than two-century history and is approximately three quarters the size of the Capitol itself. The entire facility is located underground on the east side of the Capitol so as not to detract from the appearance of the Capitol and the grounds designed by Frederick Law Olmsted in 1874. Built in 1873 and restored in 2009 following a fire, Eastern Market is Washington DC's oldest continually operated fresh food public market. Located in the heart of the historic Capitol Hill neighborhood, Eastern Market is DC's destination for fresh food, handmade arts and crafts, and community events. Every day of the week, South Hall Market buzzes with activity as these indoor merchants sell the finest meats, poultry, seafood, produce, pasta, baked goods, flowers, and cheeses. Outdoors, visitors enter a plaza filled with handmade arts crafted by some of DC's best local artists. Eastern Market's arts and craft vendors are made up of painters, sculptors, independent designers, woodworkers, jewelers, potters, and photographers. Bus leaves from the Milton municipal lot at 8:00 am and departs Washington at 4:00 pm. The cost of the trip is $40 for Milton/Rehoboth Beach Historical Society Volunteers and Members and $45 for Non-Members. Price includes transportation and tickets for the U.S. Capitol Tour. Please be advised that the day includes an extended element of walking. Lunch is on your own. Please call 302-684-1010 for reservations or any questions. Summer Garden Party

With the completion of the canal overlook, the museums first phase is now complete. To celebrate this wonderful stage in the development of the museum, we invite you to join us for a garden party by the canal, to be held May 21, 2011. Please see the invitation to the party in this newsletter and come help us celebrate the start of the season in our beautiful setting by the canal.

Plans are already underway for the 2011 Beach Ball. Last years Beach Ball was a tremendous success raising more than $49,000 for the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society. This years event will be held Saturday, August 6th at Kings Creek Country Club and we will be celebrating with a surfing theme. Well have great decorations, great food and dancing to the music of the 60s. Mark your calendars!
