CRITICAL COAL VOTE COULD COST MILLIONS OF DOMESTIC JOBS AND CAUSE ELECTRICITY RATES TO SOAR
WASHINGTON, June 19, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --The U.S. Senate will soon hold what is likely to be the most important energy vote this year: an up-or-down vote on Senator Jim Inhofe's resolution (S.J. Res. 37) to overturn the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) onerous Utility MACT rule. This may be Congress' last chance to stand up to the EPA and stop this rule, which is the most expensive power regulation in American history. It remains unclear how several coal state Senators will vote on the legislation. Senators Warner and Webb of Virginia, Senator Casey of Pennsylvania, Senator Rockefeller of West Virginia as well as Senator McCaskill of Missouri and Senator Tester of Montana are all under intense pressure to support the legislation but have not publicly indicated how they will vote. Senator Inhofe recently commented, "the vote on my resolution will likely be the one and only opportunity to stop President Obama's war on coal - this is the one chance for my colleagues to show their constituents who they really stand with. Which of my colleagues will vote for the only real solution?" Finalized by the EPA in February 2012, Utility MACT has the stated goal of reducing mercury emissions at U.S. power plants. However, the real aim is to fulfill the President's promise that under his Administration, "if somebody wants to build a coal plant, they can, it's just that it will bankrupt them." Studies have shown the EPA's approach will force power plants to close across the country, force electricity prices to spike by an average of 12% nationwide, and cost the economy well over a million jobs. Inhofe continued, "EPA has consistently misinformed the American public on the subject of the true economic impact of its new (UMACT) rules. This Administration's War on Coal needs to be stopped." About Count on Coal: Count on Coal is dedicated to educating communities about the value of coal to America and to enlighten lawmakers about how coal keeps our electricity rates low with America's most abundant and affordable energy resource. We must keep fighting against the War on Coal! Is this email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser.

Thank you! American Commitment activists like you lit up Capitol Hill and helped turn what could have been an obscure issue into a high-profile showdown yesterday on the floor of the United States Senate. Together we sent over 70,000 letters to the Senate urging them to VOTE YES to stop Obama's war on coal.

Unfortunately, we came up just 4 votes short, with the Inhofe Resolution to stop the War on Coal failing 46-53.

We cannot stop the fight. American Commitment is launching an aggressive effort to hold senators who betrayed their states accountable. Please support this effort by clicking here to donate right now.

Five Democrats voted Yes: Mary Landrieu (La.), Joe Manchin (W. Va.), Ben Nelson (Neb.), Mark Warner (Va.), and Jim Webb (Va.). Five Republicans voted No, including all four from New England - Kelly Ayotte (N.H.), Scott Brown (Mass.), Susan Collins (Maine), and Olympia Snowe (Maine) - and one from, of all places, Tennessee.

Too many ignored us and betrayed their states. Just a few examples:

Lamar Alexander: 3,687 letters from Tennessee constituents ignored. Electric bills in Tennessee will jump 13.5 percent for homes and businesses. Bob Casey, Jr.: 3,424 letters from Pennsylvania constituents ignored. He gave a green light to the EPA bureaucrat who recently said he wants coal communities in Pennsylvania to "just go away."

Claire McCaskill: 2,778 letters from Missouri constituents ignored, raising electric bills in Missouri 23 percent. This incredible hypocrite actually has the nerve to say this on her official campaign web site: "Claire hasnt been afraid to break with members of her own party to protect Missouris coal-fired power plants and fight back against unnecessary EPA regulations." Yeah right.

We cant let them and the others get away with it, but they will if you and I dont redouble our efforts to expose and stop them. Please support American Commitments aggressive effort to hold these senators who betrayed their states accountable by clicking here to donate right now.

We lost yesterday's vote, but we won something very important: we put every United States Senator on the record on Obama's war on coal. Now we must hold the senators who identified themselves as soldiers in that war accountable so we can stop Obama's plan to make our electricity bills "necessarily skyrocket." Please donate today.

Yours truly, Phil Kerpen President American Commitment
