Sightseeing tour showcases history

See one of the Great Lakes, a national park, an international wildlife refuge, a naval air station where a former president once trained and a historic home that belonged to one of the nations most controversial military leaders all in one day. The new Southeast Michigan Sightseeing Tour features those sites and more when it kicks off at 12:30 p.m. today from the Hometown History Tours office, 150 Maple, Wyandotte. The tour showcases the rich history, abundant natural resources and numerous recreational opportunities found on Grosse Ile and in the communities spanning the Old Hull Highway from Wyandotte to Monroe. The narrated tour follows the twists and turns of the Detroit and Raisin rivers and recounts the parts those important waterways played in the regions development. People will be amazed by the interesting social, military and industrial history which occurred here, said Karin Risko, Hometown History Tours founder and tour guide. In addition to history, we show off our unique natural resources and new greenway developments, which include biking and hiking trails, as well as wetlands and one of the best spots in eastern North America to see the autumn migration of more than two dozen species of raptors such as eagles, kites, falcons, owls and vultures. The tour runs from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. and includes a short break in Monroe. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children and can be purchased online at www.hometownhistorytours.com or by calling 1-734-642-5712. Advance sales are recommended as motor coach seating is limited. Two additional tours are scheduled for July 22 and August 19. The Southeast Michigan Sightseeing Tour was developed in part with a grant from Downriver Linked Greenways and Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan.
