So, Today we are discussing a big question (Is India really incredible??). Today we are discussing on the devil of dowry. Lets welcome our guests. Mr. Nipun president of national human rights commission (NHRC), Mr. Yash a professor , dept. of social studies , Amity University, Mr. Akshay from Jamshedpur village , Jharkhand So, Mr. Nipun, What do you think about this social evil?

Excess of everything is bad. So is the case in dowry system. If parents dont give anything to girls on the occasion of marriage it shows there lack of care. We know that even on small occasions, parents love to give something to their children. Giving to children is a source of pleasure for parents, but when it is demanded, the problems start. Dowry, which was a status symbol in the past, has become an evil practice today. There are huge demands. In some communities, the rates are very high. It becomes very difficult for the parents of girls to manage this amount. Thus today it has become evil practice.

Sumedh (caller) - good afternoon RJ Dhruv, here Sumedh? I want to ask Mr.
Nipun about some measures one must know to curb this problem.

Hi Sumedh, very good question, what we can do is More and more debates or sweet plays can be appreciated in the schools as well in colleges also Anti-dowry laws should be made strict. The boys should be brain washed at young age itself against dowry. Also, last but not the least the boys can take the initiative by telling their parents not to demand.

Dhruv (RJ) so Mr. Yash, why this system of dowry was originated?

Yash- Actually, dowry system was initiated in India so that a bride could have a
little financial back-up and foothold in her in-laws' house. This was done in order to protect her from harassment and ill-treatment .This was considered as the advantage for giving dowry. However, as years progressed, this turned out to be the biggest disadvantage for the

bride as her greedy in-laws began to thrash her for more and more dowry, ultimately leading to numerous dowry deaths, suicides and divorces.

Akshay- <interrupting> what r u saying?

I agree that its difficult for parents to manage huge amounts of money but it is an important ritual in Indian society, it was a generous thought by our ancestors. Money and other things of utility safeguards girls future and strengthen s her image in front of her in- laws. For some parents its a pleasure but some feel burdened but have no choice.

1. Payment of dowry demonstrates that the husband-to-be is capable of caring for and supporting a wife. 2. The dowry system is a safeguard to the stability of marriage. 3. Payment of the dowry satisfies a deep longing for justice and legality in the eyes of the families involved. 4. Perhaps most important of all, dowry is understood to be an evidence that the man is serious about his intentions to make the marriage stable.

Would you mind sharing your views about the cayclation of dowry system with the girls security in her in-laws house?

Sumedh- hi sir, its good to hear you and the issue you have raised/escalated is
of reasonable concern. I dont think dowry can at all, be a provider of security. I

think only a perfect mate can create an aura of security &comfort for a girl .Because I believe there is no end to greediness.

Dhruv (RJ) So Mr. Akshay, after listening to Mr. Souravs views, do you still think this practice should be continued?

Akshay- yeah, I would like to add on this, as I think rather than embracing their
daughters with a huge sum of money and a no. of utilities , what the payments should follow is bless their daughters with their teachings so that they can spread them with lots of love in her-in-laws-house. I think the lesson of love can better work as a dowry for a girl, because money would be finished a day but the values learned from her parents would help her to retain love & respect for others throughout her life time.

Yash- yes, an appreciable point of view

Mr. Akshay what I think is. What is important is that all concerned are satisfied that the young man is ready to be a faithful, loving, dependable, and capable husband to the girl. This is the spirit that underlies the dowry system when properly administered. I dont think that there is any argument in the favor of this system. It degrades the woman to the status of a commodity being sold and bought and It makes marriage to become primarily an economic relationship in which the choice of a wife depends on one's ability to pay rather than on mutual respect and love between bridegroom and bride. The deep need for a foundation of legality and justice in marriage is better satisfied by the public vows of love and fidelity under God, witnessed and approved by family and friends.
