Topics will be assigned by lottery. Groups will pick a # 1 to 8 from a hat. There will be a trading period whereby groups can trade topics. Once you have a topic decide who will be for and against your topic:

PREPERARATION & ASSIGNMENT


Assignment For Debaters: Each debater will work independently on their preparation and will complete all tasks below. Each debater will get an individual grade for his or her preparation. Before the debate, debate teams will meet to coordinate a strategy. Check List of Tasks _____1) Use a two pocket folder to submit your preparation. _____2) In the LEFT POCKET. (All of the items below must be typed, black ink, 12 font, double spaced) _____3) A brief opening statement (2 minutes long read) that has passion and outlines your case. _____4) A series of at least 10 thoughtful questions sequenced in a logical order _____5) A brief closing argument (2 minutes long read) summarizes your strengths and their weaknesses _____6) In the RIGHT POCKET of your folder _____7) A cover page: On the top of the page a) Name b) position on the issue c) class d) date (keep it simple) _____8) An outline of your major points. You must have at least 5 major points. Under each point you should have a quote, or statistics, or other evidence to back it up. You should document your evidence using the parenthetical method (author page#)

Debate Format
I) OPENING STATEMENTS The For position will make a 2 minute opening statement The Against position will make a 2 minute opening statement II) DIRECT EXAMINATION QUESTIONS The For position will have 8 minutes to question the against position The Against position will have 8 minutes to question the for position III) FOLLOW UP QUESTIONS The For position will have 3 minutes to ask follow up questions to the against position The Against position will have 3 minutes to ask follow up question to the for position IV) CLOSING STATEMENTS The For position will make a 2 minute closing statement The Against position will make a 2 minute closing statement

Debater Tasks Debater one: should make the opening and closing statements and ask the follow up questions Debater two: debater should handle the 8 minute direct questioning Both debaters must answer questions. Judges Tasks: The judge must take notes on the case and the next submit a written decision as to which side presented a better case. The decision should be two pages double spaced typed and your notes should be attached.
