Fall 06 08/10/06 Explanation of the Figures Attached to Illegal Dumping: The Biggest Terror Plot Against Africa. Preliminary: The literature that goes along with this presentation is very important. But, most important is to understand the message I am trying to communicate along with the graph/s that go/es with each slide. Def: Illegal waste: Defined as any substance that can cause harm to humans/environment. I. Fig.A. Shows the Geographical map of Africa. On this island, Bioko, Equatorial Guinea, I was raised. Also, here we have the mainland, Rio Muni. Equatorial Guinea (EG) is about the size of Maryland. On the other hand, we have Somalia and Ivory Coast on this map. These two countries are the best examples that I chose to talk about in my presentation.

Fig.1. Shown in this figure is the long way traveled by the ship that dumped the waste in Ivory Coast between two month ago (August 19-22). The ship is normally used to transport crude oil. So, after every operation, the company that owns the it is required to clean it up from toxic chemicals and other waste derived from oil. The ship had delays in one of the port that it was stationed and the company did not want to be charged for further delays. So, the easiest solution they found was to dump the waste in Ivory Coast. Also, the regular process of getting rid of the waste that the ship was transporting would have cost the company a lot more expensive than the normal price this company was willing to pay after the multiple delays.

III.

Fig.2. Waste was dumped secretly at night in places normally traveled by commuters. None of the residents In Ivory Coast was aware of the situation until they got poisoned the next morning by the horrible smell coming out of the oil sludge.

IV.

Fig3. Illegal dumping, like any other business, has its contributors. Also, there are lots of people who benefit from it.

Illegal dumping is normally not seen as a bad business by those people who conduct it. They would not do it instead. In fact, the company that owns the ship that dumped the waste in Ivory Coast still reluctant to accept its responsibilities for causing this humanitarian crisis.

Fig.4. Shown here in this figure is one of the many lagoons that surround the city of Ndjamena, the capital of Ivory Coast, where most of the waste was dumped. Fig.5-6. Two pictures of the ship that transported the waste to Ivory Coast. The ship Probo Koala is chartered by the Holland-based oil trading firm Trafigura. Fig.7-8. These figures depict the humanitarian crisis that emerged in conjunction with the scandal in Ivory Coast.

VIII. Fig.9-10. Shows the desperate situation that the victims of this tragedy experienced, which, as usually, are women and children the most vulnerable to suffering in The stupid History of the Human Race. IX. Fig.11. Shows the extend of the political crisis in a country troubled by multiple wars. There is the war against the countrys former colony, France, initiated short after three French citizens were killed by one of the rebel organization that takes part in the conflict that is currently ruining this countrys development. In retaliation to this incident, France destroyed the Ivorian Navy back on November 6, 2004. Also, there is the political war between the president and its opponents. The other war going on in Ivory Coast is the struggle of reconciliation between the diverse cultural groups that inhabit this rich nation after they were alienated in the Colonial Era by the French colonial administration through the French Rule.

Fig.12-13. Here in this figure, we observe the street protest by many of The Children of the Struggle. The young boy wearing the mask is actually crying. He does not seem to understand what is happening and why he has to be wearing a mask. Fig.15-17. Somalias Chernobyl. The days after the December 26 tsunami. The figure almost explains it all. However, I will add that if well preserved, Somalia could be one of the worlds biggest tourist destination resources in

XI.

East Africa. Also, its position relative to the Indian Ocean, could made Somalia a good reference point to study the monsoon currents, which would benefit the world.

XIII. Fig.19. The ongoing crisis in Darfur, Sudan, is a mirror image regarding to Africas domestic and foreign policies in dealing with its own neighbors and its partners in the developed countries. XIV. Fig.18 & 20. Given in this figures are two monuments commemorating the appreciation of the national heritage in both in Mali and in Ghana. The point I want to address here is the idea that peace and stability are the key to lead the progress of one nation. No country in the world could be developed under conditions of war and other hostilities among its duelers. J.Talin.
