Prerequisites: Two semesters of organic chemistry
Text: Nelson, D. L., and Cox, M. M. Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry (4th Edition). 2005.
W. H. Freeman and Company.
TeamBased Learning: I will be using this active learning approach intermittently throughout the
class. This teaching strategy involves dividing the class into 6 member teams. The teams will be
formed the first day of class and remain the same for the entire course. Before a given Team
based learning (TBL) session you will be given an out of class reading assignment. At the
beginning of the TBL session a short individual assessment will be given in class. This is
designed to assess your individual preparedness for the TBL session. Following the individual
assessment, the same assessment will be done as a team. Following the team assessment, we will
discuss the assessment and any issues with the content will be dealt with. Next a group learning
problem will be given to each team followed by a class discussion of the problem. Your
performance in TBL will be 12.5 % of your grade and will be based on your performance on the
individual assessments, group assessments, group learning problem and a peer evaluation of each
team member at the end of the semester. This teaching strategy is designed to help you apply the
course concepts in thinking and problemsolving. Please feel free to contact me with any
questions, concerns or comments you have about this teaching strategy and your individual
learning style.
Reading Assignments: Designated chapters are designed to reinforce, reiterate and supplement
lecture material. Reading assignments for TBL sessions are required.
Attendance and Participation: Attendance in class is strongly suggested. Exams will be based
on material covered in class and the content of the TBL sessions. A portion of your grade will be
based on your participation in the TBL sessions. If you miss a TBL you will be allowed to make
up your individual assessment but you will receive the grade for the performance of your team in
your absence.
Problem Sets: Six problem sets will be assigned and are due on Tuesday of each week. The
problem sets will be written by me and graded by the TAs. You may discuss these problems with
others and during TA led discussion sections but what you turn in MUST BE YOUR OWN
WORK. Problem sets must be turned in by 11:00 am on the day they are due. A late assignment
will lose 10 points for each day (or portion of day) that it is late.
Exams: Three 60minute exams will be given as indicated on the attached schedule. The exams
will NOT be multiple choice but consist of a mixture of problems, short answer, essay, matching,
and definitions. The exams will be based on material covered in class and will be written by me
and graded by me and the TAs. Note that the third 60 minute exam will be given during the final
examination period on June 28th from 9:0012:00.
Makeup exams/homework: Makeups for exams will only be given for extreme
circumstances/emergencies. Every effort should be made to contact me as soon as a situation
arises.
Grading:
Exams IIII 75%
Problem Sets 12.5%
TBL 12.5%
Final grades will be given as follows: 90100% = A and up, 8089% = B and up, 7079 % = C
and up, 6069% = D and up, < 60% = F. I will determine the final grade distributions at the end
of the semester.
Blackboard: I will use Blackboard to post homework solutions, grades, course documents, etc.
You should all have access to Blackboard. Direct your browser to https://courses.duke.edu and
login using your NetID. If there are any problems accessing this course with Blackboard please
let me know immediately.
TA Help Sessions: Help sessions will be held from 4:00 pm5:00 pm on Mondays, Wednesday
and Fridays in room 1009 Medical Science Research Building II (MSRB II). If no one has
shown up by 20 minutes after the start time, the session will be cancelled. The help sessions are
to help you understand the concepts discussed in class. The material will not be relectured nor
will answers to the homework given. Please come to the help session with specific questions
pertaining to the lecture or homework prepared. If you cannot attend the help sessions as
scheduled please see me or one of the TAs to arrange an alternative time for help. The TAs will
alternate the help sessions as indicated on the course schedule.
