at the Diamond Jubilee concert at
Buckingham Palace last month.
Laura, who sings under the
name Elsie, was a backing singer
for Sir Tom Jones at the star-
studded event.
Laura also had the chance to
meet the likes of Kylie Minogue,
Sir Elton John and Sir Paul
McCartney backstage.

New site for Normandy memorial
A new location has been unveiled for
ellesmere Ports normandy Veterans
Stone following discussions with The
normandy Veterans Association.
The stone will now be situated around the
corner on Stanney Lane, with the move
forming part of major works to improve
and widen the whitby Road/Sutton way/
Stanney Lane junction in the town, which
includes carriageway widening and footway
works.
Local member Councillor Justin Madder
said: The redesign of the area around
the crossroads needed to form part of the
improvement works and be in keeping
with the great new developments currently
taking place in ellesmere Port.
This is now a key junction for the newly
built west Cheshire College and the
University Church of england Academy
building and I am pleased that our towns
future can sit alongside, and complement,

The green fngered efforts
of youngsters at Little
Sutton Ce Primary School
have taken them all the
way to Britains most
prestigious horticultural
event, the RhS Chelsea
Flower Show.
The school was one of
more than 300 across the
country to take part in a
learning journey challenge
to grow fowers or fruit
and vegetables, run by
Scotts Miracle Gro.
Three schools from
the ellesmere Port area
were delighted when the
competitions judges chose them - with St
Bernards and Childer Thornton primary
schools joining Little Sutton at the show.
Scotts Miracle Gro selected produce
grown by just 30 schools to bring together
and create two gardens, one featuring
fruit and vegetables and the other
concentrating on fowers. The displays
were united with a red, white and blue
Jubilee theme, and the children and
organisers were thrilled to be awarded a
silver medal for each garden.
Compost, containers, grobags and
seeds were all provided for the schools to
produce over 30 different crops. And, for
the ellesmere Port schools, Burleydam
Garden Centre also got involved giving
weekly talks and plenty of support to
enthuse the children.

represented the school at the
show along with the head
teacher, Jo Pitchford and
parent, Graham weston. The
girls loved handing out leafets
and talking to visitors about
the gardens, but said that the
real highlight was meeting
some famous TV gardeners.

covert security cameras were stolen from a 25
acre wooded area of private land.
Church lane A man was seen on CCTV
cameras breaking into an unlocked blue Toyota
Auris and stealing loose change.
Foxall Way - Youths jumped in front of a car
and tried to steal a handbag from inside but
fortunately the car was locked and the female
driver was able to drive away.
Heath lane Thieves broke into a Scout hut.
hollywood Car Sales, Little Sutton - A vandal on
a bicycle was caught on CCTV ripping the wing
mirrors from a white Ford Transit and throwing
them into a garden.
Rossall grove - An 87-year-old man was the victim of a distraction theft. he allowed
a man into the house to settle payment for roofng work but the man is accused of
stealing 500 from a wallet in the bedroom.
Huxley Court The number plat was stolen from a silver and black honda 1000
motorbike.
THIeVeS broke into headquarters hair salon, on woodland Road, whitby three
times within the space of two weeks, stealing beauty products and cash.

LoCAL amateur drama group Stage Fright
returned to Little Sutton Library in ellesmere
Port for their latest show, following on from last
years sell-out success.
The companys production, entitled Amongst
the Library Shelves, is a comedy and drama
that takes place in a fctional library setting.
Most of the stories are written by members of
Stage Fright.
Stage Fright is a community-based and
independent amateur drama group whose
main focus is to promote wellbeing and bring
people together in a friendly and fun activity,
regardless of experience. Stage Fright meets
every Thursday at ellesmere Port Fire Station
in the community room at 7pm.

This young all white male cat came to us as a stray. Can you offer him his ideal
home? He is very friendly and loves attention. An experienced cat owner is
needed as he sometimes gets overexcited and will give you a little nip but
usually it is only in play. Because of this we would not consider homing him with
a family with young children
Bex is about two years old he is neutered, vaccinated and micro chipped.

Stanley is three years old and very friendly. Unfortunately Stanley has the FIV
virus so must be kept as an indoor cat. He will make a very loyal and loving
companion. He follows his fosterer around everywhere and when she sits down
Stanley thinks it is especially so he can sit on her lap. Stanley is the perfect
companion, he is happiest on your knee, or on the newspaper you are trying to
read.

closure due to redevelopment works at The Port Arcades. The public conveniences
are located at the entrance to The Port Arcades car park and include RADAR key
accessible disabled toilets. The facility is open daily from 8am to 4pm.
Benefts cheats given community sentences
TWO women have been convicted of beneft fraud in separate cases brought before
Chester magistrates.
l Carolyn Edwards, aged 65, from Horace Black Gardens admitted beneft fraud
amounting to more than 10,000 in Housing and Council Tax Beneft and Pension
Credit.
The court sentenced edwards to a 12 month Community Punishment order, and
she must undertake 150 hours of unpaid work. She is also required to fully repay the
overpaid beneft to Cheshire West and Chester Council and the Department for Work
and Pensions.

guilty to three offences of beneft fraud amounting to 7,500. She failed to report
changes in her circumstances in order to claim Housing and Council Tax Beneft and
Jobseekers Allowance.
Chester Magistrates Court heard she failed to declare earnings when she
commenced employment and was overpaid beneft totalling 7,500, a substantial loss
to public funds. The court sentenced Fitzgerald to a Community order and she must
undertake 60 hours unpaid work. She is also required to repay the overpaid beneft.

Te fnancial services sector, due to the
Financial Services Authority (FSA), is clamping
down on the many retail products on ofer, such
as payment protection insurance, sub-prime
loans and endowment mortgages.
Solicitors adopt an open approach to the way
they deal with clients, keeping them updated
on the progress of their case. Te Law Society
recently issued a practice note to members
about complaints handling.
We are seeing this raising of the bar in terms
of standards developing in the work of estate
agents too. Te introduction of the Consumers,
Estate Agents and Redress Act in April this year
is encouraging estate agents to join one of the
government-backed voluntary schemes designed
to codify standards for agents.
Te Ombudsman for Estate Agents is one of
those schemes and its code of practice makes
specifc reference to the handling of conficts of
interest. Keeping buyers, sellers and everyone
informed seems to be order of the day. Tis can
be difcult in practice though.
Solicitors have been tightly regulated for
many years, but estate agent regulation is new,
gradual and still fnding its way. Tere is no
overall regulator of estate agents, bar the generic
watchdogs such as the Ofce of Fair Trading.
However, the Ombudsman service gives
consumers a valuable weapon by which to tackle
errant behaviour.
As well as this scheme, the law is always there
to tackle matters of confict of interest.

LanTS in fower this month include
delphiniums with their tall blue and white
spires of fowers. They tend to die off in
severe winters and get eaten by slugs as they
emerge in spring so you may need to buy new
plants in some years. Cut back the dead fowering
stems and many with give you a second fowering
in late autumn.
For those who are lucky to have moist or boggy soil,
there are some lovely plants for these situations. Purple
Loosestrife or Lythrum virgatum Rose Queen or The Rocket
provide tall spikes of pink fowers which would look good
rising up above hostas or low growing perennials.
Honeysuckle fowers in the hedgerows and it is a lovely plant that
will often fower into autumn. Try scented varieties of Lonicera
periclymenum (our native honeysuckle) such as Serotina or
Graham Thomas. They will fower best in light shade and in
conditions where the roots are shaded. Try to replicate their
natural conditions, growing through hedges with root
shaded, moist soil and fowers in sun. Too hot a position
and they get mildew on the leaves and fail to fower.
Some plants such as perennial Geraniums, Catmint and
Centaurea Montana will have fnished fowering. Cut
back the fowering stems and some of the leaves and you
will fnd that the plant will put on new growth and often a
second fush of fowers.
Continue sowing seeds of salads such as beetroot and radishes
to extend the season lettuce seeds do not like too high a
temperature for germination so sowing on a cooler series of days is
best. Also sow seeds of French beans, winter salad leaves, carrots
and turnips. Do make sure that brassica plants are netted. I
know of one person who recently lost all the newly planted
brassicas to pigeons.
New potatoes can be harvested especially if the plants are
in fower as this usually indicates the potatoes are of a good
size. Leeks should be planted in holes about 4 to 6 inches
deep to ensure the stems are blanched white. I use the
handle of a trowel to make a hole, drop the leek into it then
water in so the water puddles at the base of the hole. The
leek will grow away to fll the hole and give long white leeks in
winter.

Stage Fright a new drama group in the Port
If you have any skills to contribute or just simply want to make new friends and help
out in any way, then the group needs you. Stage Fright wants to produce material
that it can be proud of and bring entertainment and social inclusion into ellesmere
Port. The group meets at Stanney Grange Community Centre, Alnwick Drive,
ellesmere Port, and ellesmere Port Fire Station Community Room, on Coronation
