Observation Proper

The class we have observed was the second year students, section A of the Constancio E. Aure Sr. National High School (CEANHS) which is formerly known as the Asis National High School in Mendez-Nuez, Cavite, with their Biology subject teacher Mrs. Josephine G. Martinez. We have noticed that the classroom environment is very conducive to learning. The room is well-ventilated and organize. As we have entered the room, the students were quiet and wellbehaved. The day was started by a proper greeting to the teacher. The students looked ready for that days lesson. It was evident when most students were eagerly took some notes so they can keep up with the flow of the teachers discussion. The teacher recalled the lesson they have previously discussed before moving in to the next topic. There was class interaction with the teacher. Most students were actively participated and they really did well in the subject which justified their enthusiasm towards the subject Biology. Because of their so much enthusiasm, we have observed that they sometimes answered collectively most of those times even though the teacher didnt require them to do so. The lesson was well-organized and continuous. The lesson had gone smoothly because of guide questions. After the lesson, a ten-item evaluation was given and we have seen that the results were very good. The subject was ended by the teacher by giving the students their assignment about their next lesson.

Strategies of the Teacher

Mrs. Josephine G. Martinez used Direct Instruction or Classroom Demonstration as her teaching strategy. She did well in the execution of her topic. She was able to achieve her objectives as stated in her lesson plan (she showed us her lesson plan beforehand). At the beginning of her discussion, she has done recalling the lesson they have previously discussed. After the recall, she started her new topic by a motivation. As part of her motivation, she introduced her lesson by showing pictures to her students. The pictures are related to their next topic. She then asked her students questions about what they have observed in the pictures. After her motivational activity, she started the new topic. The teacher used visual aids. We have

noticed that her visual aids did not contain any lectures in sentence form and only included illustrations about the topic. When we had a chance to ask her why she taught that way, she said that she knew that her students were visual learners. She used jokes while teaching which made the class lively and interactive. Mrs. Martinez engaged her students to guide questions and that caused the students to participate actively. We have observed that Mrs. Martinez gave her students hints or clues for them to easily share their ideas. After every subtopic, she asked her students if there are questions and other follow-up questions. She didnt gave all her knowledge about the topic to her students and she let them to ask questions if they want to know more and thats the time she will be discussing her lesson detailed. When the discussion was ended, she asked her students to summarize the topic she has presented. After that, she gave the students a ten-item evaluation to sum up what they have learned. They checked the paper and after the checking, she gave the students their assignment about their next topic. The method used by the teacher was able to create a large amount of information her students need. It was able to cover everything planned for that day. The teacher was noticeably enthusiastic discussing her topic which persuaded students to have enthusiasm towards the subject too.

III.

Approaches to Positive/ Negative Behaviour

Mrs. Martinez has a very good approach towards students behaviour. She has shown her students of her high expectations of them which made the students more motivated to learn. As we have observed, she used praises to the positive behaviours of the students. She used to say words like very good, yes, and ok as sign of her appreciation if the students had answered her questions correctly. Mrs. Martinez didnt show any approach to the negative behaviours of her students, simply because the students were well-behaved that time but she has some actions and facial expressions when the students was not able to answer her questions (shell just shook her head and then ask someone else to provide a different answer). After the class, when we had our chance to talk to Mrs. Martinez, she told us that she didnt tolerate her students irresponsibility. If her students didnt answer her questions, she asked them to remain in a standing position as her punishment. In instances that students cant give an answer to a

difficult question or were just plain confuse, she will give hints and coax the students to try and answer. Most of the time, that method becomes effective and return students eagerness to actively participate in class merely because she didnt reject any answer from her students and considers every answers as a nice trial. To lighten up the mood of the class, she inserted humour, so they wont be pressure to answer.

Reflection/Insight

The environment of the classroom we have observed is very ideal. There is an interactive learning inside the classroom. The strategy of the teacher really motivates the students. We have realized that though the method used by the teacher is a traditional one, it still depends on how the teacher presents it so the students can learn. Mrs. Martinez always engages some guide questions which motivates the students to think what the topic is all about. In her discussion, there was the vividness of the topic she had been discussing. She helps students to their learning difficulties because if her students are not able to answer, she gives clues and hints in order for them to easily catch up with the flow of the topic. The classroom interaction we have witnessed was due to the fact that Maam Martinez has a very good strategy. According to the Myths of Motivation, it is not the teacher who motivates students but his/her teaching style. Maam Martinez justified that the phrase teacher motivates students is a myth. We, the observant have appreciated the way she knew the weaknesses of her students. A teacher should show interest to her students by knowing them and this was exhibited by Maam Martinez during our observation by knowing what kind of learners her students are. By knowing their strengths and weaknesses, we would be able to draw out an effective strategy that would enable our student to learn effectively. The classroom became more interactive for the teacher inserted humour in the topic but these humours are still related to the topic and does not made the discussion out of the topic which other teacher does when they insert some stories making the subject different and far from the main idea. The students are very competent inside the classroom. They have excellent standings maybe because they were trained to do so. According to the Expectancy Theory of Motivation of Victor Vroom, learners becomes more motivated to learn if he/she has a high expectation of him/herself or other people also has a high

expectation of them. Because Mrs. Martinez has shown her students of her high expectations of them, the students became more motivated to study. The students enthusiasm towards Biology evidenced that the principle of motivation Learning is more effective when an individual is ready to learn, that is when one wants to know something is true. Mrs. Martinezs lecture, though it is the most commonly used strategy in teaching, was able to present it in a way that the students were also able to give their input. We thought that the atmosphere was not tense and the lesson plan was designed to have a continuous interaction between the students and the teacher, which is a very good thing. When it comes to the approaches of Maam Martinez to the positive behaviours of the students, we can say that what she has done is very effective in motivating learners because the best reward that the teacher can give his/her students is through praises and appreciations. She had also told us that she uses some punishments toward the negative behaviours of the students. In our view, giving students punishments is a best way to change their studying habits and personality and this can also make other students learn from the results of the negative behaviour of their classmates. We can connect this to one of the classifications of Social Learning Theory of Albert Bandura which is the Vicarious Learning which states that a person can learn by seeing or hearing the consequences of someone elses action. We, as observant was able to see things that we cannot be easily seen during a discussion as students. The teacher is the one responsible of imparting lessons but it doesnt stop there. It is also the teachers task to make sure that the students can understand those kinds of lessons. One characteristic of a good teacher we have noticed from Maam Martinez is her effectiveness and efficiency and teaching which should be possessed by all the teachers for a better teachinglearning process. That is what we have observed during our visit in CEANHS, Mendez-Nuez, Cavite and we can say that what we have witnessed is very useful for us as future educators, when we are already in the field of teaching Biology. Our experience there will be so unforgettable. Observant: Peji, Erwin P. Daileg, Josuel Jon A. Rofuli, Cesar G. Jr. De Guzman, Charlene II-A BSBT II-A BSBT II-A BSBT III-B BSITE
