LATE S.N. MUDBIDRI
Committed to impart knowledge with values.....
S.N.M. POLYTECHNIC
S.N.M. POLYTECHNIC BOYS' HOSTEL
A Home away Home
Focused to discover your world.....
I am delighted to place before you our annual magazine for the year 2011-12.
This magazine mirrors various academic and non-academic activities at a
glance performed during the whole year. This magazine also helps us convey
information of where we stand to the stakeholders.
Technical education has become a challenge to all concerned. Mere possession
of infrastructure and assets cannot predict the performance of any educational
institution. The performance mainly depends on how these facilities are put to
use by personnel working in it. Educational Institution is a system in which
inputs are transformed into outputs through a teaching learning process. For the process to be effective the
institutions need to utilize the resources optimally in transforming the inputs in the form of students into pass
outs for gainful employment. Skilled and talented human resources in any educational institution can ensure
efficiency and equip students with the essential knowledge, skill and attitudes needed at the world of work.
The upgraded Polytechnic curriculum in Karnataka is developed emphasizing skill acquisition by students
besides subject expertise. New courses such as Communication and Skill Development Programme, Basic
Management Skills and Indian Constitution are introduced in order to make students aware of the requisite
knowledge before entering into the corporate world.
At S N M Polytechnic efforts have been made to exploit the adequate resources to the best of our ability in
transforming the aspirants into employable engineers. This is apparent in the campus selections held and
the number of placements our students have obtained in the recent past. Team SNMP is working very hard
towards fulfilling the vision of our founders. Students from all walks of life, most of them from rural regions
are trained and prepared to face the challenges of tomorrow. This has resulted in having our alumni spread
across the country and abroad. During the past 28 years this Polytechnic has grown gradually and we feel
contended of our achievements. We still have a long way to go ahead in making this Polytechnic a model
Polytechnic. I am sure with the support of my colleagues, students and well wishers and with the backing of
our Management we will definitely reach our goal.
I congratulate all the achievers of our Polytechnic during this academic year. Congratulations to all our
deserving students selected in various campus hiring drives. I appeal to all the present students to strive
hard and excel in their studies. Make best use of the facilities provided to you and try to develop yourself
with the assistance of your teachers.
I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the office bearers of student council, all the outgoing and
present students of our Polytechnic, our staff members, both teaching and non-teaching for their unstinted
support and for shouldering responsibilities. I sincerely thank the President and members of our Management
for providing excellent ambience to work here. I will be failing in my duty if I do not express my thanks to
Mr. S P Gurudas and the entire editorial committee for the hard work put in to bring out this beautiful
annual magazine.
Happy reading.......

GEO - STATIONARY SATELLITES OF INDIA
Asha, IVth Sem. DEE
A satellite, which appears to be stationary with
respect to earth is called a geostationary satellite.
The geo-stationary satellites which are placed in an
orbit about 36,000 km over the equator are used for
telecommunication, television broadcasting, tele-
medium, meteorological
servi ces etc. Indi a
establ i shed the geo-
stati onary satel l i te
system, namel y Indi a
National Satellite (INSAT)
system in 1983. INSAT
i s one of the l argest
domestic communication
satellite systems in the
Asia Pacific region with 5
satellites - INSAT-2C,
INSAT-2DT, INSAT-2E,
INSAT-3B & INSAT-3C in operation. Besides these
satellites, INSAT-ID which was launched in June
1990 is used for meteorological imaging and few
other services even after eleven years of operation.
INSAT-2B was launched in July 1993, but was
decommissioned from regular services during the
year and now it is still used for satellite aided research
and data relay services and two of its transponders
are used for scientific experiments.
Master control facility (MCF) at Hassan in
Karnataka monitors and controls all the geostationary
satellites of ISRO, including initial orbit raising phase,
MCF controls INSAT-2C, INSAT-2E, INSAT 3B and
INSAT-2DT. MCF is monitoring GSAT-1 whenever
the satellite is within its visibility. Besides supporting
INSAT missions, MCF also provides orbit-raising
support, in orbit payload testing and interference
testi ng servi ces to
international missions.
INSAT Services:
India space research
programme i ncl udes
INSAT servi ces for
telecommunication, T.V.
Broad-casti ng and
meteorological services
and the IRS for resource
centres are the
outstanding services for
the communication development.
Tele-education:
One of the major problems in India is illiteracy.
Some 350 million of Indians cannot read and only
about 13 percent of whole population goes to high
school. India has hard plans to fill this gap with the
help of satellite technology starting with literacy
programme based on satellite instructional television
education project in 1975 & then with the INSAT-3A
communication satellite. These services were
shifted to the dedicated satellite for education -
EDUSAT launched in 2004. EDUSAT is first
28
interactive satellite based on distance education
system for the country through the audio visual
medium with direct to home quality broadcast. This
satellite has multi-spot beams with both C-band &
Ku-band transponders to cover different parts of
country. Main purpose of EDUSAT is to connect
classrooms in remote areas of India.
Tele-Medicine:
Another important application is tele-medicine.
Tele-medicine is exchange of video audio and data
information between doctors and patients separated
by distance to improve the quality of health care.
Because of advantages of space based
communi cati on over other channel s of
communication, tele-medicine over satellite is one
of the most attractive applications of new-technology
in developing world. India has initiated several such
health projects. One of these connects 60 remote
hospitals to 16 super speciality units in cities.
Earth Sensing:
Another application is in the regions, which are
frequently hit by natural disasters. India made use
of its space assets to help relief activities in the
effected areas. ISRO has established video
conferencing to provide connection for tele-medicine
through VSAT technologies and it is also used for
satellite mobile service.
News gathering:
Satellite news gathering using INSAT system
enables real-time news coverages, Prasar Bharathi
is procuring outdoor - broad cast to cover important
events in different locations for transmission via
satellite to a central station at Delhi for rebroadcasting
over Doordarshan channels. INSAT provides a
reliable high fidelity through radio-networking.
Meteorology:
Meteorol ogy data provi ded by INSAT i s
processed by the INSAT meteorological data
processing system of India. Upper winds, sea
surface temperature and precipitation index data are
regularly obtained by it. INSAT-VHRR are used by
Doordarshan duri ng news coverage & by
newspapers as part of weather reporting. At present
repetitive weather system observation over India
ocean from geostationary orbit are available only
from INSAT system.
Indian National Satellite system (INSAT) is multi-
purpose operations Satellite system for domestic tele
communications, meteorological observations & data
rel ay nati on wi de di rect satel l i te tel evi si on
broadcasting and radio, television programme
distribution. The system is a joint venture of
Department of Space (DOS), Department of
Telecommunications (DOT), India Meteorological
Department (IMD), All India Radio (AIR).
On Sunday evening, March 11, 2007 India
successfully launched another communication
satellite, the INSAT - 4B. It is equipped with
24 communication transponders and will mainly
boost direct-to-home television services in India.
Thus the INSAT' s have brought about a
communication revolution in India, enabling people
living in far-flung areas to talk to earth other.

BURJ KHALIFA (Incredible Tower)...
Over 45,000m
3
(58,900 cu yd) of concrete,
weighing more than 110,000 tonnes were used to
construct the concrete and steel foundation, which
features 192 files burried more than
50m (164ft) deep. Burj Khalifa's
construction has used 330,000m
3
(431,600 cu yd) of concrete and
39,000 tonnes (43,000 ST 38,000
LT) of steel rebar and construction
has taken 22 million man-hours.
Exterior cladding of Burj Khalifa
began i n May 2007 and was
completed in September 2009. The
vast project involved more than 380
ski l l ed engi neers and onsi te
technicians. At the initial stages of
installations the team progressed at
the rate of about 20 to 30 panels
per day and eventually achieved as
many as 175 panels per day.
The tower accomplished a world record for the
highest installation of an aluminium and glass facade
at a height of 512 metres. The total weight of
aluminium used on Burj Khalifa is equivalent to that
of five A 380 air crafts and the total length of stainless
steel bull nose fins is 293 times the height of Eiffel
tower on Paris.
In November, 2007, the highest reinforced
concrete corewalls were pumped using 80Mpa
concrete from ground level; a vertical height of 601
metres. Smashing the previous pumping record on
a a building of 470m on the Taipei 101; the world's
second tallest tower and the previous world record
for vertical pumping of 532 metres for an extension
to the Riva del garada Hydroelectric power plant in
1994. The concrete pressure during pumping to this
level was nearly 200 bars.
Mohammed Naufal, VIth Sem. DCE
The amount of rebar used for the tower is 31,400
metric tonnes laid end to end. This would extend
over a quarter of the way around the world.
Building a global icon:
Excavation work began for
Burj Khalifa in January 2004 and
over the ensueing years to its
completion, the building passed
many important milestones on its
goal to become the tallest man
made structure the world has ever
seen. In just 1,325 days since
excavation work started in January
2004, Burj Khalifa became the
tallest free standing structure in the
world.

The world is indeed a small place - this saying
stands correct in todays ever growing and changing
world order. It would not be wrong to say that todays
world is the world of information
and tel ecommuni cati on.
Everyday new technology and
inventions are being made in the
area of information processing
and travelling. There is hardly
any area which has not been
affected by this. At the one hand,
al l these di fferent ways
of tel ecommuni cati on and
i nformati on exchange have
highlighted the necessity for
multipurpose development and
growth of information technology
and on the other the easy access
and use of it has boosted the
network of information exchange.
All this has been possible through
i nformati on technol ogy l i ke
telephone fax, telex, computers, internet, E-mail,
photocopies scanner, printer, cellular phones, pager,
videophone, digital camera, multimedia etc. In reality
information technology is a generic technology which
is constituted of 3 components i.e hardware, software
and peopleware.
Cellphone : Cellular telephone or cell phone is a
2 way wireless communication system that gives
access to a person who is on the move. The
connection between the instrument and mobile
exchange is established via an intermediate station
called base station (BS), where a transmitting tower
is created.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Rashmitha S. Shetty, IVth Sem. DEC
E-mail : Electronic mail (E-mail) involves non-
interactive communication of information between
the sender and a receiver. The transfer of information
from one computer to another
is made using telephone lines,
which uses Packet Wwitched
Data Network (PSDN)
technique.
Fax : Facsimile transfer of
messages, i.e Fax, is used for
transmission of weather charts,
engineering drawings and even
hand wri tten notes. The
equi pment i n whi ch the
document is placed is POTS.
Voice mail : If someone wants
to enj oy the benefi ts of a
telephone, without actually
owni ng one, he shoul d
subscribe to voice mail.
Electronic data interchange (E.D.T.) : It enables
usually a customer and supplier to exchange routine
documents such as purchase orders and invoices
using standard electronic form and their own
computers, linked through a service provider.
Video Conferencing : It allows persons sitting in
different parts of the city, country or world to meet
face to face without being there. This is possible with
the help of special types of cameras attached to
computers. Anyone with a web browser can read
the papers and posters at leisure.
Multimedia : It stands for integration of or more
media. It is one of the most recent information
31
technology that is popular world wide due to its multi
dimensional approached uses. These utilised some
of the applications of electronics which help for IT
3.5G mobile.
IT 3.5 G-mobile : The next ramp-up in the mobile
industrys speed road map to India around the corner.
The swedish telecom leader, Ericson, which is also
the largest supplier in this country of cellular base
stations the ground equipment behind mobile phone
network has demonstrated the fist ever test link of
what is popularly known as 3.5G.
3.5G magic in India : India will soon join the elite
club of countries that have 3G mobile services with
Mahanagar telephone Nigam (MTNL) setting up
Indias first 3G network in Delhi and Mumbai. The
network will have a capacity of 4 M lines and will be
operational by next year. The total investment in the
project will be of Rs.11,000 crore. 3G services have
already become popular in Japan, U.K., Hongkong,
Australia, Sweden and Denmark.
Worms: A computer worm is a self contained
program that is able to spread functional copies of
its segments to other computer systems, unlike
viruses, worms do not need to attach themselves to
a post program. There are 2 types of worms-host
computer worms and network worms. Host computer
worms are entirely contained to other countries. Host
computer worms where the original terminates itself
after launching a copy on another host.
Conclusion: The world is indeed a small place,
this saying stands correct in todays ever growing and
changing world order. One need not raise his
eyebrows if the word distance sounds ironical in
the present enchanging era of information and
telecommunication.
WHY ARE AEROPLANES NOT AFFECTED BY LIGHTNINGS ???
Manjuprasad C., IVth sem. DEE
Clouds are made of water droplets and dust in the
atmosphere at altitudes of 1 to 16 k.m. While travelling
through air, due to friction, the water droplets get electrically
charged.
Lightning occurs due to sparking between oppositely
charged clouds. A high voltage spark rushes towards the
ground (at zero potential) through moisture - filled air.
If any ground based structure is on the path of the spark, the top of that structure is excited to a
high electrical potential while its bottom (in contrast with the ground) remains at zero voltage, This
high potential difference sets a very high current in the structure causing sudden heat generation in
the material and destruction. But in flying aeroplanes there is nothing like a ground point which
remains always at zero voltage.
Hence even if hit by a lightening, the planes entire surface acquires the same high potential
and due to lack of potential difference there is no current and hence no destruction.

ARTIFICIAL SATELLITE
Tarique Anjum, IVth Sem. DEC
Man had been told for many centuries that the
moon is earth's satellite. As scientific knowledge
increased, man's hunger to know more about space,
more about the happenings on earth at various
places also increased. As a result of these inquiries,
artificial satellite took birth.
Artificial satellite is a man
made mechanical devices.
With the help of rockets these
were launched in space in
predetermined orbits. These
artificial satellites while revolve
around the earth in a defined
orbit would send to earth the
col l ected and recorded
pictures. With these satellites
communi cati on woul d be
established from one corner of
the earth to another remote corner. Information
about rain, weather, thunderstorms and mineral
opulence on earth could be gathered and fed on the
earth.
In October 1945, an article published by one
Author C. Clark, a renowned writer at scientific
developments in the popular English weekly
'Wireless World' created a commotion in the scientific
world. It was stated in the article that a satellite could
be stationed at one particular place in the sky and
messages sent from one place of the earth could be
relayed from that satellite to another place on the
earth. Everyone at that time had thought that it was
only a imagination. But subsequently it did prove to
be a reality. The cold war between America and
Soviet Union played an important role in Astronomy.
America, in 1955, under the stewardship of John
Hagen, a renowned scientist, established a research
centre & got involved fully in the building of artificial
satellites. Russia too, under the stewardship of
Anatoli and Poloskov got involved in their research
day and night. In this competition Russia astonished
the world on October 4th
1957 by launching an artificial
satellite named Sputnik. This
was the first artificial satellite
being 58 cm in diameter and
having a weight of 82Kg and
was going round the earth in
every 96 minutes at a height
of 226 to 940 km from earth.
This being an experimental
satellite was placed in its orbit
with the help of rockets. After
a period of nearly a year,
having being successful in its mission it retired from
its services on January 4, 1958 by entering the
ocean.
Shaken by the Russian achievement, America
too tried to launch a satellite which was lighter than
Sputnik-1 with the name Vanguard - 1. But it was
unsuccessful. Going one more step forward, Russia
launched Sputnik-2 on November 3, 1957, along with
a dog Lyka in it. That dog was healthy and alive, till
the satellite returned to earth. With this trial it was
ascertained that living beings could undertake space
travels and also got sufficient records about the rays
of radiation present in the earth's atmosphere. But
in America the situation was different. It attempted
to launch another satellite in Vanguard series on
December 6, 1957. After rising about 3 feet, the
33
rocket exploded. Again on February 5, 1958 another
rocket exploded after rising to about 6.5Km height
everyone in America including the President lost
hopes and were deeply worried. Subsequently, the
team of verner Van Brown, who took over the
stewarship of the research centre succeeded in
launching an artificial satellite named Explorer - 1 on
January 31, 1958. This satellite of only 14 kg weight,
displayed the Van Allen felt which had surrounded
the earth. Inspired by this America, on March 17,
1958 launched successfully one more satellite in
vanguard series. This satellite having reached its
orbit successfully, displayed that earth is flat at its
poles and also the earth's path of orbit is elliptical
but not round as had been presumed earlier.
Russia also launched another huge artificial
satellite named Sputnik-3 in May 1958. This carried
out many experiments in space with the help of the
laboratory it had carried. In all, seven Sputnik
spaceships were launched in this Sputnik series. In
April 1961 Uri Gagarin of Russia became the first
person to have undertaken a journey in a spaceship
and to have come back to earth safe. In turn, America
on July 20, 1969, sent Neil Armstrong and Edvin
Aldrin to the Moon by spaceships, Apollo-11 having
walked on the moon successfully they returned to
the earth safe.
On March 19, 1975 India launched its first
satellite named Aryabhata, in memory of the famous
scientist of Astronomy. This assisted in transmitting
news, weather reports etc. Later on, on June 7, 1979,
the second satellite Bhaskara was launched. By this
satellite, information regarding landscape, water
resources, forests, minerals, etc. could be collected.
These satellites were launched with the assistance
of Russian technicians. Subsequently, many more
satellites were launched by India for launching these.
India had been using imported rockets all along. But
on August 10, 1979, India launched one more
satel l i te wi th the name Rohi ni -1, usi ng the
indigenously built rocket SLV-3, from Sriharikota in
Andhra Pradesh. Presently, by using Indian made
Cryogenic engines in the rockets other satellites are
being launched.
The Indian Space Research Organisation in
Bangalore has undertaken to build rockets for Indian
space research centre.

AUTOMOBILE - "A COMFORTABLE & IMPORTANT LOCOMOTIVE"
Collected by Santhosh, IVth Sem. DAE
An 'Automobile' 'Autocar' 'Motor car' or 'car' is
a wheeled motor vehicle used for transporting
passengers, which also carries its own engine. The
1st automobile vehicle ran on India's roads in 1897.
Until the 1930, cars were imported directly, but in
small number.
Now a days 'Automobile industry' in India is one
of the largest in the world & one of the fastest growing
globally. India's passenger & commercial vehicle
manufacturing industry is the 7th largest in the world
with an annual production of more than 307 million
units in 2010.
According to the recent reports. India is set to
overtake brazil to become the 6th largest passenger
vehicle producer in the world, growing 16-18 percent
to sell around three million units in the course of 2011-
12. In 2009 India emerged as Asia's 4th largest
exporter of passenger cars behind Japan, South
34
Korea & Thailand. As of 2010 India is frame to 40
million pasenger vehicles.
More than 307 million automobile vehicles were
produced in India in 2010 (an increase of 33.9%)
making. Our country is the 2nd fastest growing
automobile market in the world. According to the
Society of Indian Automobile manufactures, annual,
vehicle sales are projected to increase to 5 million
by 2012 & more than 9 million by 2020 & more than
25 million by 2050. The country is expected to be at
the top of the world in car volumes with approximately
611 million vehicles on the nation's roads. The
majority of the India's car manufacturing industry is
based around three cluster in the South, West and
North. The Southern cluster near Chennai is the
biggest with 35% of the revenue share. The western
hub near Maharashtra is 33% of market. The
northern cluster is primarily Haryana with 32%.
Gurgaon & Manesar in Haryana form the
northern cluster where the country's largest car
manufacturer, Maruthi Suzuki is based. Maharashtra
is the western cluster with companies like General
motors, Volkswagen, Skoda, Mahindra & Mahindra,
Tata motors, Mercedes, Benz, Land rover, Fiat &
Force motors, having assembly plants in the area.
Aurangabad with Audi, Skoda and Volkswagen also
forms parts of the western cluster. Another emerging
cluster is in the state of Gujarat with manufacturing
facility of General motors in Halol & further planned
for Tata Nano at Sanand. Ford, Maruthi Suzuki and
Peugeot - citroen plants are also set to come up in
Gujarat, Kolkata with Hindustan motors, Noida with
Honda & Bangalore with Toyota are some of the
other automobile manufacturing regions around the
country manufacturers.
The Indian Automobile Industry manufactures
over 11 million vehicles and exports about 1.5 million
each year. The dominant products of the industry
are two wheelers with a market share of over 75%
and passenger vehicles with market share of about
16%. Commercial vehicles & three wheelers share
about 9% of the market between them. About 91%
of the vehicles sold are used by house holders &
only about 9% for commercial purposes. The
industry has a turnover of more than USD $ 35 billion
& provides direct & indirect employment to over
13 million people and on the other hand, India has a
well - developed tax structure.

HISTORY OF THE AUTOMOBILE
Mohammed Arif I.D., VI Sem. DME
The internal combustion engine and early gas-
powered cars.
The very first self-powered road vehicles were
powered by steam engine and by that definition
Nicolas Joseph Cagnot of France built the first
automobile in 1769 recognised by British royal
automobile club and the automobile club de France.
Daimler and Benz invented highly successful and
practical gasoline powered
vehicle that ushered in the
age of modern
automobiles. Daimler and
Benz invented cars that
looked and worked like the
cars we use today.
History of internal
combustion engine (the
heart of the automobile) An internal combustion
engine is any engine that uses the explosive
combustion of fuel to push a piston within the cylinder
the piston movement turns crankshaft that turns the
cash wheel via chain or a drive shaft. The different
types of fuels commonly used for car combusion
engine are gasoline (or petrol), diesel and kerosine.
The importance of Nucolaus Otto
One of the more important landmark in the engine
design comes from Nicolaus August Otto who in
1876 invented effective gas motor engine. Otto built
the first practical four stroke internal combustion
engine called the "Otto cycle engine:" as soon as he
had completed his engine, he built it into motorcycle.
Otto's contributions were very historically significant,
it was his four stroke engine that was universally
adopted for all liquid fueled automobiles going
forward.
The importance of Karl Benz
In 1885, German Mechanical Engineer, Karl Benz
designed and built the world's first practical automobile
to be powered by internal combusion engine. On
January 29, 1886, Benz reserved the first patent (DRP
No. 37435) for gas fueled car. It was a three wheeler.
Benz built a first four wheeled
car in 1891. Benz the
company started by inventor
Benz became the world's
largest manufacturer of
automobiles by 1900. Benz
was first inventor to integrate
an internal combusion engine
with a chassis in 1885, Gottlick
Daimler (together with his
design partner Wihelm May back) took Otto's internal
combusion engine a step further and patented.
In 1885 Daimler - May back designed on engine
which was small, light weighted, first used a gasoline
injected carburetor and which had a vertical cylinder.
The size, speed & efficiency of the engine allowed
for revolution in car design. On March 8, 1886
Daimler took a stage coach and adopted it to hold
his engine, there by designing the first four wheeled
automobile in the world. Daimler is considered the
first inventor to have invented a practical internal -
combusion engine.
In 1889, Daimler invented a V - slanted two cylinder,
four stroke engine with mushroom shaped valves.
Just like Otto's 1876 engine, Daimler's new engine
set the bases for all car engines going forward and
used today.

A TEACHERS ROLE IN MOULDING THE STUDENTS
A Teacher teaches.
A Good teacher explains.
A Better teacher
demonstrates.
A Great teacher inspires.
Yes, indeed teaching is
the nobl est of al l
professions and the teacher
i s the nobl est of al l .
A teacher is the one who
shows the way and leads us
from darkness to l i ght
through a thi ck j ungl e.
Teacher is the priest and
school is the temple of learning.
"Gurur Brahma, Gurur Vishnuh,
Gurur Devo Maheshwarha,
Guru sakshath Prabrahma,
Thasmai Sri Gurave Namaha"
This should be the devotion and veneration of a
student towards a teacher.
The foundation of a child is laid in the school.
A good school background helps in building the
character and career of a student. A well groomed
child is able to contribute more towards the society.
If an aggressive child is not corrected by the teacher
at a young age it can turn out to be an adult of ego,
frustration and impatience. A talented student, if not
encouraged by a teacher may not be able to bring
out his/ her talent in any course of life.
Teacher is the builder of a nation. He should
posess a high degree of knowledge. A doctor with
Mohammed Faheem Patel, VIth Sem. DCE
insufficient knowledge
may ki l l a man but a
teacher with imperfect
knowledge may damage
the whole nation. When
we speak of role models
we thi nk of Swami
Vivekananda, Mahatma
Gandhi , Jawaraharl al
Nehru etc. But why don't
we speak of the role model
who is right in front of our
own eyes.... our teacher.
Mad rush of schools
towards commercialisation has destroyed the
society. High tech culture, passion for pleasure has
made students to get diverted. Teachers role in such
a situation is to make students realise the importance
of discipline. Teacher is one who brings the students
from wrong path to the right one.
The teachers work within four walls silently, in
modest surroundings far from dust and dine, among
people who have not yet broken the shell of
innocence. And later someday he is confronted
with someone whose face he can't recognize,
whose name he can't recall. But still his joy has no
bounds when he hears "Do you remember me, Sir?"
This is the richest reward a man can get. Years roll
by, people grow in age and status but still they
remember their teachers who tried their best to mould
them, to give them a purpose and direction. We are
absolutely right in celebrating a teacher's day.

ENTHUSIASM
Enthusiasm has never been a part of a negative cult.
The world belongs to the enthusiast who can keep
themselves cool. Enthusiasm builds a fire within a
person. But he must not allow uncontrolled anticipation to run away
with judgement or reason. As for me I believe that enthusiasm is
"Spice of life". Nothing can be achieved without enthusiasm.
So many people are not really living, they are pathetic & unhappy lacking dynamics & motivation. The
reason is they are short of enthusiasm.
Enthusiasm can make a vast difference in a persons life. It will improve your personality, never let you go
down in your life, makes hard days good days, makes you come alive, away from your worries and tensions,
solves your toughest problems, builds power under your difficulties.
It has been said that every tomorrow has 2 handles, one of anxiety other of enthusiasm. You can hold any
of them. Choice of handle determines the character of your multiplying days. As per my experience
enthusiasm can be perpetual. It need never run down, it is a great big, wonderful fact. It keeps you young
in spirit, mind and body too.
How does one can have enthusiasm in life? Cultivate the habit to love, love people, love the sky under
which you live, love beauty, love God. The person who loves becomes enthusiastic, filled with sparkle and
joy of life.
Enthusiasm will cease to bother you in fear of people and this is a big worry to many ; you must get rid of it.
What is there to be afraid of ? Why should anybody go through life sulking like a rabbit -? The good lord
told us he will be with us & help us, why not take that as face value look the world in the face & hit it really
hard !!!
ART OF SMILING
Ashwini A. Shetty, IInd Sem. DEE
A smiling face is our greatest personal asset. A perfectly plain face becomes
attractive when it is lit up with a radiant smile. Mentally and socially too, smiling is
of great value. The mental attitude of hopefulness produces the smile which in turn
stimulates and purifies the process of thinking. Smiling awakens friendly feeling
among people to whom it is directed. It prepares the ground for healthy relationship.
There arises certain tension between the two human beings when they meet as they are two different
individuals. A smile helps to ease this tension. The man who gives the smile eases his way into the human
relationship. The man who receives the smile is put at ease and secures a certain uplift to his ego.
A smile can enrich our own lives and the lives of people with whom we come into contact. It is the most
natural and most effective exercise for the face. Your secret of success and popularity in life is a warm
intimate smile which breaks the hardest attitudes and evokes immediate response.

LISTEN TO YOUR INNER VOICE
Shiny M.D., IV Sem. DEC
Millions of men and women listen to the outer
voice of the others, but do not listen to the inner voice
of their own mind, soul, conscience or whatever you
may choose to call it.
If you listen to your inner voice at all times and
follow it, you can do no mistakes, Mahatma Gandhi
always listened to his inner voice and that is what
enabl ed hi m to wi n
independence for India,
when the sun never set on
the Bri ti sh Empi re.
Listening to your Inner
voi ce means si gns of
perpetual mental health.
Refusing to listen to inner
voice leads to chronic
diseases of both mind and
body.
"It's important to listen
to ourselves" says New
man and Borkowitz. Most
of us l earn to tune
ourselves out....
Tuning in again takes practice:
We have to encourage ourselves to speak up.
If we've stopped listening to our own voice for a long
time, that voice may become very faint ! It may have
half given up. It may also be pretty angry for having
been shut up so long. But its there ; we have to give
it a chance. If we learn how to listen, we will find out
a lot and we hear some wonderful things.
As Karl Barth said in the world of God and the
world of man, "Conscience is the perfect interpreter
of life"
Ours is the world of nuclear giants and ethical
pigmies ; and the people are suffering today as Omar
N. Bradley said, in his Armistick day address in 1948,
"The worl d has achi eved bri l l i ance wi thout
conscience". It is like milk without cream. Albert
Einstein expressed the formula of conscience
scientifically "Never do anything against conscience,
even if the state demands it."
As Dr. Samuel
Johnson said, "That every
man should regulate his
acti ons by hi s own
conscience, without any
regard to the opinion of
the rest of the world, is one
of the first percepts of
moral prudence."
James Joyce said in
the portrait of the artist as
a young man, "Welcome
life ! I go to encounter for
the mi l l i onth ti me the
reality of experience and to enforce in the smithy of
my soul the uncreated conscience of my race."
As Henry Lloyd said "Churches come and go,
but there was ever been but one religion. The only
religion is conscience in action."
Voltaire wrote to Frederick the great on April 6,
1767, "In the midst of all the doubts which we have
discussed for 4000 ways, the safest course is to do
nothing against one's conscience." With this secret
we can enjoy life and have no fear from death.
As Emmanuel Swedenborg said, "Conscience
is God's presence in men."

HONESTY
T.K. Kaushal Rao, IV Sem. DEE
To tell the truth, to be fair & straight forward, and to lead a life of honour and dignity.
"Honesty is the 1st chapter of the book of wisdom" - Thomas Jafferson (3rd President of U.S.)
THE EMPEROR'S SEED
There was once an old emperor in the far east who knew had to choose a successor even though he
had no children of his own. He assembled all the young boys in the kingdom and gave each of them a seed
to grow. He told these boys to go home, plant the seed and come back to place in one year. He could then
judge the plants that they brought and choose the next emperor. One of these boys was named Ling, & he
went straight home to tell his mother the whole story. She helped him to get a pot & plant the seed.
Everyday, Ling would water his seed, but it never grew. Even after 6 months, when the other boys were
talking about the plants they were growing. Ling's seed did nothing. He felt like such a failure. After an year
passed,it was time to show the emperor the plants. Ling was scared to take his empty pot, but his mother
encouraged him to be honest about what had happened. When Ling arrived, he was amazed to see at all
the beautiful plants grown by the other boys. Sadly, he stayed in the back with his empty pot. When the
emperor arrived, he surveyed the room, saw Ling in the back and called him to the front to ask his name. He
looked at Ling and then announced to the crowd, "Behold your new emperor ! His name is Ling."
The emperor said "I gave everyone here a seed to bring back 1 year later. But the seed I gave you
was boiled and could not be grown. All of you, except Ling, have brought me plants that were substituted
for the one I gave you. Ling was the only one with the courage and honesty to bring me the pot with my
seed in it."
Honesty is.... Telling someone the truth, even if it's not what they want to hear.

BEST FRIENDS
Mohammed Faheem Patel, VI Sem. DCE
Once two friends were travelling in a desert.
They started quarreling over a silly matter. One of
the friend turned over to the other and gave him a
slap. The other one did not reply anything but in
return he sat down and wrote on the sand, "Today
my best friend gave a slap on my face".
Then they continued their journey and reached
an oasis. They thought of relaxing for a while and
did so. When they were crossing the desert, the
one who had been slapped saw a river and thought
of swimming and jumped into it. He did not know
that the river was deep and he began to drown.
His friend without any hesitation jumped into the
river and saved him from the mouth of danger.
Once recovered from the fear of death, he sat
down near a large flat rock and began to carve that
"Today my best friend saved me"
The other one was anxious to know about the
behaviour of his friend and asked him that "Why
did you write in sand at first that I slapped you and
when I saved your life why did you carve it on the
rock?"
He replied him "When the best friend offended
me. I wrote in the sand which changes in time and
gets erased, but when a best friend takes the risk
of his life to save his friend's life, I am sure that
time doesn't erase it and forget it."

PLACE OF WOMEN IN SOCIETY
Manjula, II Sem. DEE
In anci ent Indi a,
women enj oyed a
pl ace of pre-
emi nence. They
were equal partners
of men. Some of
them were great scholars and were held in high
esteem. It is aid that many of the hymns in the vedas
were written by women. Even during the periods of
the Ramayana and the Mahabharatha there lived
women of greater virtue, wisdom and responsibility,
thus we had women like Sita, Savitri, Gargi, Draupadi
and Damayanti.
It was however, during the medieval period that
women were pushed behind the purdah. Not long
ago, they had to live within the four walls of the house.
They were deprived of education and all opportunities
of progress. They had to do all the menial chores of
the house and live like slaves. Where as the western
women had long ago won their right to vote liberty
and education. Indian women still wallowed in
illiteracy, ignorance and squator. At the most they
were treated as objects of enjoyment. They had no
voice in their husbands mundane activities. Only
shyness and subservient submissiveness was their
ornament. They had no right to choose their own
partners, particularly in the rural areas, women were
prohibited from wearing fashionate clothes.
Independence has brought about a vi rtual
emancipation to at least the urban women in India,
now they do not lag behind men in any field. Indian
women have got equal rights and march shoulder to
shoulder with men. There are women teachers,
doctors, nurses, scientists, engineers, officers, sports
women, journalists, magistrates, architects and even
pilots and drivers. Who can forget the women world
leaders like Mrs. Indira Gandhi, Mrs. Margaret
Thatcher, Mrs. Bandarnaike, Mrs. Goldameir,
Mrs. Vijayalaxmi Pandit and others.
In the field of education, women out do men. There
are more women in higher educational institutions
than men. Most of the top positions in all university
examinations are bagged by women. Even in extra-
curricular activities, women do not lag behind men.
Now Indian women are conscious of their rights.
Their voice can no longer be suppressed. They raise
their voice in choosing their life partners and in the
choice of profession of their liking, they mix up with
men freely and participate in political competitions,
musical concerts and even express abundantly their
debating skills. They no longer believe in purdah or
seclusion. They even learn Judo and Karate to
ensure security.
It must, however, be admitted that some women
cross the limits of decency. They read morbid
literature and are fond of erotic songs and films. They
thus misuse their liberty. Most of the women in rural
areas, particularly those belonging the lower castes,
are illiterate, ignorant and superstitious.
Although something has been done for women, much
remain to be done. Let us not forget 1991 the year
of the girl child.

Life is to be fortified by many friendships to
love and to be loved is the greatest
happiness of existence.
Have you ever wondered how
certain people are able to draw
others to them and gain the
admiration and affection of friends ?
Such people may or maynot appear
particularly wealthy, witty or
buttressed with an expensive
education. But somewhere in their
personalities is an ingredient causing
them to be respected and admired.
It is called friendship factor.
Friendship is the spring board
to every other love. Friendship splits
over onto the other important
relationships of life. People with no friends usually have
diminished capacity for sustaining any kind of love.
On the other hand, those who learn how to love their
friends tend to make long and fulfilling relationships.
Work well on business teams and enjoy their life ...
It is an interesting fact, women have more
friends than men. Most men have had neither
practice in the art of intimacy on role models to point
the way. Little girls can walk to school hand in hand,
hold each other up starting laugh and cry and say
You are my best friend. I need you, I like you, boys
wouldnt dare.
People with deep and lasting friendships may
be introverts, extroverts, young, old, dull, intelligent,
homely, good looking, but the one characteristic they
always have in common is their lack of facade. They
have a certain transparency, allowing to see what is
in their hearts. By cultivating transparency we can
deepen our friendships.
For fear of seeming sentimental, many of us
hold back expressions of warmth and thereby
missout on rich and profound friendships. We say
Thanks when we mean God bless you It would
add immeasurably to the amount of love abroad if
we would be fewer in declaring our affection. Done
to talk about our affection is the one more rule for
deepening our friendships.
THE REWARDS OF FRIENDSHIP
Abhilash P.K., VI Sem, DEE
The best friendships
have all weathered
mi sunderstandi ngs and tryi ng
times. Some people assume that
because they are the object of
someones wrath, the relationships
is over, if we realize that every long
term relationship will have its
difficult times, we will not be as likely
to jump ship when our friendship is
yawing and pitching.
People who apologize are not
vacillating. We must have a certain
moral certitude to admit when we are
wrong. Because relationships are
the most difficult things we attempt in this life, of course
we will make mistakes in them. And when we do, we
can save ourselves considerable misery by
apologizing.
It is perhaps the most powerful thought anyone
can have when we remember the primacy of love and
believe in our almost unlimited capacities for giving
and receiving it, life can take on a rent joyfulness.
Someday, after we have mastered the winds
and the waves, the tides and gravity, we will hanker
for god the energize of love and then for the second
time in the history of world .....

Discipline is a training or a way of life aimed at
self control and conformity. It plays a very important
role in the life of a student. It is a training to obedience
and order. Parents are the beginners of discipline in
their children. It is but natural that the child catches
all the good and bad qualities of its parents. It is
said that The hand that rocks the cradle rules the
world, in other words, whatever the mother and
father offer the child, the child accepts, keeps and
develops. Here comes the need for discipline in
parents.
Along with the mothers milk, every child accepts
without questioning the mothers love and attitudes.
Therefore, a disciplined mother brings up a disciplined
child. The father by nature is a stranger element in
fostering and maintaining discipline in a child.
Disciplined parents in normal circumstances are
blessed with disciplined children. The schools are
only the watch-dogs of discipline of the students, who
are entrusted to the school authorities by their parents.
The child starts his social life within the four
walls of the class room. The teacher is thus his model
of life. He or she impresses with all the good and
the bad qualities possessed, (by them) upon the
children. It goes without saying that the teacher is
the maker of a student. The parents entrust their
beloved ones to the care of the teachers and so
without any compromise, teachers have to be the
examples of discipline. Only then they can transform
young minds into the disciplined assets of the society.
Very often a disciplined teacher is a successful
teacher and naturally the students who go out of his
or her hands carry with them the precious gift of
THE IMPORTANCE OF DISCIPLINE IN THE
LIFE OF A STUDENT

discipline which they cherish through
and ti l l the end of thei r l i ves.
Therefore an educational institution must and should
be the nursery for the formation of disciplined citizens
of tomorrow. Anyone who loves, cares and is
interested in the future of a student cannot at any
cost compromise with discipline.
A student makes in his life more and more
improvements, like to be polite, honest, hard-working,
charitable, forgiving, co-operating and above all
loving if he wishes to be good disciplined student.
Everyone expects a student to be good, polite, gentle,
helpful whereas disciplined students enjoy love,
compassion, support from others, whereas an
indisciplined student will be a burden for the society
and he will be badly treated by the others.

The modern idea of success is comparatively
wider and deeper than the idea of our ancestors. A
successful person is integrated and is controlled from
within. He acts as his heart tells and ignores the
thought that mind says !
A successful person is organized, reasonable,
and he lays in a fiduciary position. This lets him to
achieve great heights. A optimistic thought will
always help us to remember our duty of being happy
and also fetches us the happiness of doing such duty.
Only our faith stimulates us to be powerful and
determines the will of our success. A person can be
ambitious in three different ways. Firstly being, the
desire to attain the goal sent in life, which makes us

WHAT DOES FAILURE MEAN ???
Roshan Jameer, VIth Sem. DCE
Failure does not mean I'm a failure ;
It does mean I have not yet succeeded.
Failure does not mean I've accomplished nothing
It does mean I have learnt something
Failure does not mean I've been a fool ;
It does mean I had enough faith to experiment
Failure does not mean I've disgraced ;
It does mean I've dared to try ;
Failure does not mean I don't have it ;
It does mean I've something to do in different
Failure doesn't mean I am inferior ;
It does mean I am not perfect
Failure does not mean I've wasted my life ;
It does mean I have an excuse to start over

India is famous for its natural resources,
festivals & much many things as well as corruption.
Corruption is the misuse of public office for private
gain. The corruption mainly takes place in following
places like Panchayaths, Taluk Offices, Police
stations, Govt. hospitals etc. According to many
statistics India stands No. 2 in corruption.
To break the nasty road of
corruption, the youth workers
should take the lead. The most
possi bl e force to control
corruption is the youth and they
should take responsibility to
launch anti-corruption campaign.
It is generally said that
Youth is that spark which needs
no ignition. No man is born as
corrupt. The most common
cause to corruption is poverty or more specially, large
economic and social inequalities. On the other hand,
people believe that corruption is the only way to
achieve things and since everybody is corrupt.
Youths are the new bricks to make the building
of nation Making the brick strong is the responsibility
of the brick maker otherwise, those raw bricks
devastate the building itself. So it is needed to make
the brick strong before it is used in building
construction. Likewise we should shape the mind of
youths before they go to combact with corruption. If
they are muscular they will undoubtedly win the war
against corruption. Shaping the mind of youths by
guiding knowledge of anticorruption.
In today's world youth is highly attracted
towards evil sources. As a result a huge destruction
is occurring all over. It is true that youth is highly
ROLE OF YOUTH IN CONTROLLING CORRUPTION
amenable, but one must show the
guts to take up the challenge to guide
the youth to correct path as Socrates.
Swami Vivekananda and other eminent people.
The educational reform is the key to close the
door of corruption house. If students are given
the right knowledge of anti
corruption in the high school :
they may not do corruption in
their life span. The role of youth
is unavoidable to control the
corruption in nation building,
until the stumbling blockage of
corrupti on i n the way of
development wont reach its
destination.
There are some points that
our youths must follow which may help to control
the corruption
1. Refuse to pay bribes / or report requests for
bribes from public officials.
2. Send articles on corruption to the media or start
a news letter by youth.
3. Bring the concept of social hates to the
corrupted people in society.
4. Form anti-corruption clubs in schools / colleges.
These four points may say the role of youth for
corruption control and they should fight with
corruption and pull out the root of it from the society.
Conclusion: It is a difficult task to control corruption
and it is not possible to control by youths only. They
should take the support of other people to make
corruption free nation.

Due to family's pressure, the
couple quarrel very often. Though
the girl love the guy deeply, but she
always ask him" "How deep is your love for me?"
As the guy is not good with his words, this often
caused the girl to be very upset. With that the family's
pressure the girl often vents her anger on him. As
for him, he only endures it in silence.
After a couple of years, the guy finally graduated
and decided to go for further studies in overseas.
Before leaving, he proposed to the girl: "I'm not very
good with words. But all I know is that I love you.
If you allow me, I will take care of you for the rest of
my life. As for your family I'll try my best to talk them
round. Will you marry me?" The girl agreed and
with the guys determination, the family finally agreed
to let them get married. So before he leaves, they
got engaged.
The girl went out to the working society, whereas
the guy was in overseas, continuing his studies. They
enchanged their love through emails and phone calls.
Though its hard, but both never thought of giving up.
One day, while the girl was on her way to work,
she was knocked down by a car that lost control.
When she woke up, she saw her parents beside her
bed. She realised that she was badly injured. Seeing
her mum crying, she wanted to control her. But she
realised that all that could come out of her mouth
was just a sigh. She had lost her voice...
The doctor said that the impact on
her brain has caused her to lose her
voice. Listening to her parents
comfort, but with nothing coming
out from her, she broke down.
During the stay in hospital ,
besides silence cry. it's till just
silence cry that companies her.
Upon reaching home, everything
seems to be the same. Except for
the ringing tone of the phone which pierced into her
heart every time it rang. She did not wish to let the
guy know and not wanted to be a burden to him.
She wrote a letter to him saying that she does not
wish to wait any longer. With that, she sent the ring
back to him. In return, the guy sent millions and
millions of reply and countless of phone calls.. all
the girl could do, besides crying, is still crying. The
parents decided to move away, hoping that she could
eventually forget everything and be happy.
With a new environment, the girl learnt sign
language and started a new life. Telling herself
everyday that she must forget the guy. One day,
her friend came and told her that he is back. She
asked her friend not to inform what happened to her.
Since then, there wasn't any more news from him.
A year passed and her friend came with an
envelope, containing an invitation card of the guy's
wedding. The girl was shattered. When she opened
the letter, she saw her name in it instead. When she
was about to ask her friend what's going on, she
saw the guy standing in front of her. He used sign
language telling her "I've spent a year's time to learn
sign language. Just to let you know that I've not
forgotten our promise. Let me have the change to
be your voice. I love you." With that he slipped the
ring back into her finger. The girl finally smiled....

WHY ARE STUDENTS NUTS ABOUT "BRANDED STUFF"
Rashmitha S. Shetty, IV Sem. DEC
Hey....!!!
Do you have a Fast track watch, Eye wear
goggles, Adidas shoes, Nike T-shirt, Pepe jeans
pant, Puma wrist hand, Levis belt and Reebok
college bag....????
Friends, all of us know these are some branded
companies which we all are nuts about. If you see in
colleges, these stuffs are
quite common, what do
youngsters get out of
wearing it ? I don't know....
But it is true that just for a
label the students are ready
to invests 1000 of bucks. If
they walk right along the
corridor it feels as if a
branded company is
moving.
In these days the
students are very crazy
about the things which
are being shown in the ads. As soon as they got
through it, they are even ready to go to metropolitan
cities in search of it. The guys and gals both feel
that they are superior to others and want everyone
to see them. It is worth paying just for that attitude?
Are we fools to look at them ? We have come to
the colleges with great responsibilities not for a fashion
show. If we ask Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalaam on other
any great men if they had worn these branded stuffs
to reach that place ? The perfect answer is No !
Let me tell you a story which suits for the later
situation....!!!
Once there lived a king happily in a big kingdom,
but his father got some diseases, so the priests asked
him whether he could get them a fruit for Yaga. So
the king went into the forest nearby. He searched
the fruit for days and weeks but he did not get it. In
melancholy, he decided to come
back. Meanwhile, he found a hull
near a beautiful river. Beside it, animals adding to
the beauty of gay nature were absolutely charming !!!
He went there and asked the swamiji who
resided there, "Swamiji may I beg you a kind of fruit
which is being seldom used in Yaga and I must need
it anyway".
Swamiji got the idea
of it and he straight away
took the ki ng to hi s
garden and showed all
kinds of fruits and herbs
which were grown over
there. Maharaja could
find the fruit and he felt
very happy about i t.
Meanwhi l e he saw
Swamiji's daughter who
was pretty and good
looking, he was attracted
by her marveleous beauty. Besides that he was even
interested in animals. All these beautiful animals,
swamiji's daughter and overwhelming nature did not
allow him to go back. He even asked swamiji to
allow him to take his daughter and the animals to
the palace. Without permission. He took away his
daughter and animals. After he went back, swamiji
was very sad as he had lost his daughter and
animals. But the foolish king did not realise the
purpose of going there because he had forgotten
the fruit which he was in search of.
Likewise, we all have come to college in search
of fruit not for gals, guyz, cybers, brands and all those
stuff. Our parents have sent us here with great
responsibilities to bring the fruit. So we being the wise
people have to get rid off vice and become the wise.
As a friend I anticipate this attitude.
