Dear Facilitator,
You may use all of the prompts we wrote out below during the video to
encourage engagement, build excitement around the workshop, keep the
group focused, and drive the debrief after the exercise is complete.
Have fun!
The Kick-O: What is Design Thinking?
Instead of just telling you about design thinking, we want to immediately
have you jump right in and experience it for yourself.
We are going to do a design project for about the next hour.
This is going to feel rushed; thats okay. Roll up your sleeves and really
lean into the project.
Ready? Lets go!
Redesign the Gift-Giving Experience
Start by gaining empathy.
Here is language to support how to facilitate these steps.
EMPATHIZE 1Interview your Partner
Your cballcngc ls to ucslgn somctblng uscful anu mcanlngful to your artncr.
1bc most lmortant art of ucslgnlng for somconc ls to galn cmatby for tbat crson.
Example: While there are lots of ways to gain empathy for someone else, a simple, easy way to do that
is to have a conversation and ask open ended questions. When was the last time you gave a gift? How
did it go? What was your favorite part? Least favorite part? Etc
2Dig deeper
1ry to ulg for storlcs, fccllngs, anu cmotlon.
Ask Why? often.
lorgct about tbc glft, hnu out wbat's lmortant to your artncr.
Example: For example, if your user mentioned that its challenging to decide on which gift to purchase,
ask why? Maybe its because they dont really know what the other person wants; or maybe its because
theyre afraid of what the gift says about THEM as the giver any answer will lead you to understand
your user (the gift giver) better. The key is to identify anywhere youre making assumptions and then ask
a question to test whether your assumption is valid.
3Capture ndings
1ry to syntbcslzc your lcarnlng lnto a fcw 'nccus' tbat you bavc ulscovcrcu, anu a fcw 'lnslgbts'
tbat you hnu lntcrcst.
Nccus sboulu bc vcrbs - tblnl about lt tbls way - ln tbc roccss of glvlng a glft, wbat ls your
user actually trying to accomplish? What does gift giving do for THEM?
nslgbts arc ulscovcrlcs tbat you mlgbt bc ablc to lcvcragc wbcn crcatlng solutlons.
DEFINE
Ideate: generate alternatives to test.
IDEATE
4Take a stand with a point-of-view
1bls ls your olnt-of-vlcw.
1alc a stanu by scclhcally statlng tbc mcanlngful cballcngc you arc golng to talc on.
t sboulu fccl lllc a roblcm wortb taclllng!
1bls ls tbc statcmcnt tbat you'rc golng to auurcss wltb your ucslgn, so malc surc lt's julcy anu actlon-
able.
Example: Maybe you found that your partner is really trying to reunite the family; or reignite a lost love;
or infuse adventure into a boring suburban existence; or reconnect with an old friend; or demonstrate
his own creativity!
5Sketch to Ideate
cwrltc your roblcm statcmcnt at tbc to of tbc agc.
Now you arc crcatlng solutlons to tbc ncw cballcngc you'vc lucntlhcu.
GO FOR VOLUME! This is time for idea generation, not evaluation.
You uon't bavc to uraw wcll, stlcl hgurcs anu sgulggly llncs arc ^-OK!
6Share solutions and capture feedback
Spend the time listening to your partners feedback.
llgbt tbc urgc to ucfcnu your lucas. 1bls ls not about valluatlon.
1bls ls an oortunlty to lcarn morc about your artncr's fccllngs anu motlvatlons
(remember: empathy)
Here is language to support how to facilitate these steps.
Iterate based on feedback.

7Reect & generate a new solution
Now, talc a momcnt to conslucr wbat you bavc lcarncu botb about your artncr, anu about
the solutions you generated. From this new understanding of your partner and his or her needs, sketch
a new idea. The solution may be a variation on an idea from before or something completely new.
^sl yoursclf. How mlgbt tbls solutlon ht lnto tbc contcxt

8Build!
Crcatc a byslcal rototyc of your solutlon.
Crcatc an cxcrlcncc or malc somctblng tbat your artncr can cngagc anu rcact to.
lccl frcc to focus tbc rototyc on onc ascct of tbc ovcrall solutlon.
9Share your solution and get feedback
Your rototyc ls not rcclous, but tbc fccubacl anu ncw lnslgbts lt uraws out arc!
Don't ucfcnu your rototyc, lnstcau, watcb bow your artncr uscs anu mlsuscs lt.

PROTOTYPE
Reection and takeaways.
Here is language to support how to facilitate these steps.
10Group gather and debrief

5. What principle, what tool, would you infuse into the work tomorrow?
After the video questions, try these exercises:
