COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING Since its establishment in 1977, the College of Engineering (COE) has grown and matured into

a respectable engineering school. COE offers eight (8) tertiary programs, six (6) of which were recognized by the Commission on Higher Education as Centers of Development in SY 1999-2000 for three years and four (4) of these programs are currently accredited by the Accrediting Agency for Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP). In addition, it also offers three (3) masters degree programs and three (3) doctoral programs. The College of Engineering consistently has very high passing rates in board examinations in various fields. Its graduates are much sought after by industries not only in the area but throughout the country. METALLURGICAL ENGINEERING Metallurgical Engineering is a broad field that deals with all sorts of metal-related areas. The three main branches of this major are physical metallurgy, extractive metallurgy, and mineral processing. Physical metallurgy deals with problem solving: youll develop the sorts of metallic alloys needed for different types of manufacturing and construction. Extractive metallurgy involves extracting metal from ore. Mineral processing involves gathering mineral products from the earths crust. As a Metallurgical Engineering major, youll learn the fundamentals of all three fields, as well as the basics of engineering in general. We need metals to make our society functionmetals make up important parts of cars, bikes, planes,

buildings, even toothpaste tubes. Your knowledge of the production, design, and manufacturing of these metals and mineral products can be rewarding and exciting. OBJECTIVES The BSMetE program is offered to produce graduates: 1. who are capable of meeting the needs of mineral and metal processing industries; 2. who are capable of conducting ore separation studies, and analyze and interpret mineral processing from diagrams; 3. who can interpret photomicrographs of basic metal structures and relate them with the process involved; and predict metal properties under service conditions; 4. who can support their immediate supervisors in the analysis of metal extraction process requirement; 5. who can conceptualize, formulate and implement solutions to metal forming problems, designed and activities; 6. who are prepared for higher studies and research; 7. who are skilful in technical communications; 8. who have the ability to easily adjust and adapt to the real world environment; 9. who will qualify for licensure examination; 10. who are knowledgeable in the application of the computers in the industry; and 11. who can formulate process designs in ore separation, metal extraction and metal forming.

CAREER PATHS Metallurgical engineers can be employed as production engineers, sales engineers, researchers, managers or consultants in industries involved in mineral processing, metals extraction (metal refineries) and metals forming. May also engage in entrepreneurial endeavours related to mineral and metals processing/forming activities.
