ARTS 125: ART PRACTICES 1

SUMMER 2nd Session, July: 9AM 1PM Instructor: Lindsey Fromm Office Hours: Before or after class by appointment Email: fromm@unm.edu Course Blog: mmorf125.blogspot.com This is an interdisciplinary course, exploring the processes, ideas, and diverse media of visual arts. This course addresses the thematic concepts that are central to the nature of art making today. This first semesters assignments will investigate issues of LIGHT, FRAME, and MARK. Visual problem solving will be emphasized throughout the course in addition to an in-depth exploration of various materials and the nature of artistic meaning. A slide lecture, an assigned reading, and a short written response will accompany each project.

COURSE EXPECTATIONS
Complete all assignments by due date Attend all classes and arrive on time Work, draw, and read at least 8 hours outside of class time each week Engage seriously with each project and push yourself to grow creatively Actively participate in class discussion and critiques Act responsibly in the studio with regard to your own safety and that of your peers

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
During this course students will demonstrate the ability to 1. Produce creative works that explore, interpret, and/or question light, frame and mark, in relation to the creative arts 2. Utilize the elements and principles of design to structure 2D space 3. Incorporate various materials, processes and spatial concepts into the creation of objects 4. Integrate research into content based reasoning during the development of creative works 5. Critically analyze personal, contemporary, and historical works of art, as well as the artworks created by peers, for both aesthetic and conceptual quality, verbally and in writing. 6. Revise personal creative works in response to constructive critique of personal creative works by instructor and/or peers

CLASS REQUIREMENTS
Blog
Our class blog will have all of our readings and visual materials, as well as any notices, updates, important information, etc. It is required that you visit the blog site on a daily basis. You will be responsible for materials posted on the blog through reading discussion and journal entries.

Readings
All readings will be available on our blog, and will be PDF form. Our texts will allow you to engage deeper with contemporary art and critical discourse. They will be integral to our in-class discussions and writing assignments. For our course, you are not required to purchase the usual class text In the Making: Creative Options for Contemporary Art, by Linda Weintraub. However, in Art Practices II you will be reading from this book, and will most likely be required to purchase it. I leave this to your discretion. Available at the UNM Bookstore.

Necessary Materials
Sakura Pigma Micron Pen Set of 6, Black: includes sizes 005, 01, 02, 03, 05, 08: $16.00 (available online at Walmart, DickBlick, Utrect, or at local art stores Artisans, Michaels, Hobby Lobby. Mixed sizes of paint brushes, hair or synthetic: multi-brush sets are available at the bookstore, Walmart, Artisans, Michaels and Hobby Lobby: $12- 40+ (depending on quality) A paper portfolio to transport work: this can be purchased at the above mentioned stores, or one can easily be made with tagboard. Pencils and eraser: suggestedvaried hardness of graphite, 6B, 4B, 2B, B, HB, 2H, and kneeded eraser, available at Artisans, Michaels, Hobby Lobby. Other useful items: Masking tape; X-acto knives, personal set of acrylic paint (suggested: magenta to mix a true purple) OPTIONAL**: Basic Toolbox (or 125/126 Art Kit is available at the UNM Bookstore) Includes: Scissors Basic acrylic paint set Box cutter with extra blades 5 pencils and a good eraser an assortment of paint brushes glueelmers and rubber cement thumb tacks metal ruler small tape measurer sketch book (at least 8.5x11 with unruled pages)

Lab Fee
These fees will provide you with materials for various projects, these materials include building supplies in the Blue Box, drawing paper and limited acrylic paints, as well as five laptops, a scanner, digital cameras and digital projectors. At the beginning of each project we will discuss where/how these objects can be obtained.

Attendance
Attendance is a requirement and will be a significant part of your grade. You will be allowed ONE excused absence for the entire semester. Example: family or medical emergency. In order for an absence to be excused you must speak to me about it BEFORE class. Frequent lateness will lower your grade. You must be in attendance on the day of the critique or you will receive a zero for the project.

Class Participation and Preparation

For each class period, you are expected to have carefully read the required assignment, finished any assigned assignment, and be prepared to work with appropriate materials and tools. You are required to be an active participant in class discussions. You are required to bring materials to work on your project. You are required to bring in your sketchbook every day.

Attendance, participation and preparation will be 10% of your grade.

Safety
Even in the design studio there are numerous ways that unintentional injury can occur. These guidelines must be followed. Wear appropriate work clothing Wear gloves when necessary Where eye protection when necessary Clean up after yourself The studio must be clean before the class ends. No one may be excused until this has been achieved

GRADING
Each category will be evaluated on a scale of 5 to 0: 5: Excellent work 4: Good Work 3: Satisfactory Work 2: Low-quality work 1: Poor work 0: Did not complete or turn in assignment Each project will be evaluated under the following 5 categories, through the defined criteria: 1. Artful Design Demonstrate an understanding of the elements of art and what makes them effective in solving specific art problems and realizing artistic intentions. (color, form, line, shape, space, texture and value) Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of design and what makes them effective in solving specific art problems and realizing artistic intentions. (balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, proportion, repetition, rhythm, unity and variety.) Analyze and apply a variety of materials, tools, and techniques to create well-crafted artwork. 2. Content Apply art concepts to communicate ideas about self, communities, cultures and the world. Synthesize the analysis of art elements and design principles into the process of creating art work. Demonstrate conceptual depth, willingness to take risks, and progressive growth of ideas Synthesize idea-gathering processes, art elements and design principles with subject, theme and content to express personal experiences and create meaning in art. Combine art concepts to communicate simple and complex ideas. Select and integrate historic or cultural visual and aesthetic concepts (enduring ideas and processes) by creating an original work of art. 3. Technique Show skill, confidence and sensitivity in applying knowledge of art media and techniques to the production of artwork. Demonstrate an increasing level of competence in using processes, media, and techniques to create experimental display-quality works of art. Produce an artwork that represents both diversity and effectiveness of selected mediums, techniques and artistic concepts for communicating an idea. 4. Critical thinking Interpret and evaluate the qualities and characteristics of your artwork, that of your peers, and that of the artists presented in class. Examine and analyze works of art from diverse world cultures, and discuss ideas, issues and events of the culture that these works survey Explain the visual and other sensory qualities in art and nature, and their relationship to the social environment.

Investigate, analyze and reflect on various writings, viewpoints and opinions about art. Identify the characteristics and purposes of the historical and cultural contexts of selected pieces of art. 5. Participation and something else You regularly participated by making sketches, writing, taking photographs or discussing your work and the work of other students in the class during class time. You engaged thoroughly in class discussions and critiques.

Grades are assigned as followed: 20-25 = A range 15-19 = B range 10- 14 = C range 5- 9 = D range

A. Student produces excellent work, demonstrating outstanding commitment and ambition, while thoroughly engaging in class discussions and critiques B. Student produces very good work, demonstrating commitment and ambition, while engaging in class discussions and critiques C. Student produces satisfactory work, demonstrating some commitment and ambition, while engaging somewhat in class discussions and critique. D. Students work barely meets requirements, with little commitment or ambition, and fails to participate in class discussions and critiques. F. Student fails to meet requirements, does not complete, or turn in assignment.
