So, when I saw the woman holding the sign, I had to introduce myself to her.

She told me she was Lillie Holliday, the mother of Omar Shariff Thornton. I explained to Ms. Holliday that I had closely followed Omars story when it first happened, and as the police investigation continued. We spoke about the racist, hostile environment at Hartford Distributors in Manchester, and we spoke about the police investigation that was, in my opinion, shoddy at best, and steeped in the racism that Manchester, and its police force (like most police forces across the country) are so famous for. Ms. Holliday spoke with passion about the son she held so dear in her heart, and of the racism that his supervisors at Hartford Distributors allowed to continue unabated. I told Ms. Holliday that I firmly believed that Omar was not a monster, as many wanted to claim, but rather a man who was a victim of institutionalized racism who decided to fight back. Omar Shariff Thornton was a modern day Nat Turner, standing strong against racism. It is unfortunate that he lost his own life while fighting the battle. The system of white supremacy in this country was to blame for what happened August 3, 2010. Yes, racism KILLED Omar Shariff Thornton! Can someone please tell me WHY it took the Klanchester police A YEAR to look through Omars cell phone and come to the conclusion that there were NO PICTURES of the racist graffiti he had seen at work and SHOWN to friends and family? Could it be they were wiping away the evidence? And really, how can anyone claim with a straight face that there was no evidence of racism yet ADMIT that employees of Hartford Distributors saw a picture of Barack Obama with a noose around his neck at the job site? Ummm lets see Omar said he saw a picture of a Black man being

Remembering Omar Shariff Thornton

By Joanna Iovino Back in March, while at a rally for Trayvon Martin, who was killed by racist George Zimmerman, I saw a woman with a sign that said Racism killed my son! On the sign was a picture that I knew very well, a picture of Omar Shariff Thornton, a man who was subjected to racism on his job, and whose concerns were not taken seriously by his employers; a man who felt he had no other choice than to take matters into his own hands; a man who killed eight co-workers who he described as racists; a man who I cannot help but to see as a hero.

lynched. Barack Obama is a Black man, and nooses are typically used to lynch people, yet the police want to say that the evidence did not back up his claims?? It is hard for me to have any sympathy for the so-called victims in this story. To me, the people who were killed were predators. They knew that they could get away with racist graffiti at work. They knew they could mistreat Omar Shariff Thornton without repercussions. They felt secure in their belief that they could be blatantly racist on the job without consequences. And for a long time, they got away with it. The management of Hartford Distributors did NOTHING for Omar Shariff Thornton when he complained about the racist environment he was subjected to. None of Omars co-workers stood up for him against those who were practicing racism. So, Omar took things into his own hands. What other choice did he have? Omar Shariff Thornton was psychologically attacked on a regular basis, and decided to fight back when it was clear that his tormenters were going to go unpunished. Frankly, my first thought when I heard about the shooting at Hartford distributors was Well, that is eight less racist pigs in the world. Omar Shariff Thornton was a warrior, and deserves to be honored as such. Ms. Holliday will be holding a memorial celebration in honor of her son Omar at Vibz Uptown at 3155 Main Street in Hartford. The event will be held on August 3, 2012 from 7:00 pm2:00am.There will be food, entertainment and speakers. Featured guests include Willie Hodge and Shihan Willie Mack. Kunstler in Jacksonville, FL on Nov. 5, 1970

The definition of "terrorism" is fluid. A person who is classified as a "terrorist" by some can be identified as a "freedom fighter" by others. Someone who performs "terroristic acts" is often redeemed by history as time goes by and their cause is triumphant. Nelson Mandela was classified as a "terrorist" for many decades. It was not until the rest of the world came to its senses and recognized the evils of (official) apartheid that Nelson Mandela was heralded as a hero. To the British who held sway over the colonists in the years leading up the American Revolution, those who fought against their oppressive policies were "criminals", they were "lawless"- they were "terrorists." Individual acts of aggression have their place in any struggle for freedom and equality. People want to claim that what makes something a "terrorist" act is that it is unprovoked and innocent civilians are killed. Which, of course, makes all of the soldiers who fought in the numerous American imperialistic wars of aggression and killed thousands of innocent civilians "terrorists". But, no, we define soldiers as American patriots. It is OK for them to kill in cold blood, because they have the backing of the American government and are part of an organized military. We classify people from so called enemy nations who dare to fight back against American acts of aggression and imperialism as "terrorists" instead. It is interesting that Palestinians are defined as terrorists, while Israelis are not. Israel perpetrates far more acts of violence upon the Palestinians then vice versa. Of course, in this day and age, only Muslims are seen as "terrorists" and the Qur'an is looked upon as a training manual for "terrorism" (while the violence throughout the Bible is considered acceptable). No one wants to comprehend that most acts that are labeled as "terrorism" are DIRECT responses to the acts of violence, oppression and imperialism the US has been engaged in for centuries. Instead, they want to claim that "terrorists" hate "freedom". Meanwhile, in most cases they are fighting FOR freedom: freedom from American imperialism, freedom from the oppressive policies of US supported governments, freedom from occupation by foreign armies. Americans are quick to label any act of aggression by a Muslim as a "terrorist" act. If a Middle Eastern person expresses sympathy for

Who are the REAL Terrorists?

Terrorism has a place. It always has. I am not sure that now is the time for it, because my reading of history always indicated that it was best used when there was a chance for transfer of power: such as the Israeli's used in Palestine in 1945 and 1946, doing such "nonviolent" things as blowing up the Kind David Hotel, among others. The Algerians used it in the streets of Algiers in 1954 and 1955.The American colonists used it from 1766 to 1776 and beyond, and other countries and other societies have used it, but always at a time when it was to be successful, when

someone who commits violence in protest of acts of war by Americans, they are considered a "terrorist sympathizer". Yet, we do not label acts of violence perpetrated by whites, especially white "Christians" as terrorist acts.

Unless, of course, they commit acts of revolutionary violence in aggression and oppression. Then, they MIGHT be labeled

solidarity with the struggles of victims of American imperialism, terrorists. Or, more likely, they will just be called brain washed, even redeem themselves by running back into the arms of the

misguided or be given the label of mentally ill. Maybe they can white collective and claiming that they were kidnapped and had Stockholms Syndrome ahem does the name Patty Hearst ring a bell? If standing up against the corrupt system and fighting for

freedom for all oppressed people is terrorism then terrorists are HEROES. The ACTUAL terrorists, the white folks who are sword, and therefore, deserve to DIE by the sword. As for oppressing people all over the world, have chosen to live by the innocent victims? In this white supremacist world, there ARE no innocent white people. Silence is complicity. A white person who does not stand up AGAINST the system in its entirety is PART of the system, and thus is the enemy of any struggle for freedom and justice. Choosing to NOT take sides is choosing to side with throughout the world. So, I ask. Who are the REAL clear.

(US backed Israeli soldier accosting Palestinian child.)

Timothy McVeigh, who is responsible for the Oklahoma City bombing, killed 168 people. Until 9/11, his act was unprecedented in the sheer number of victims. Yet Homeland Security says that Timothy McVeigh was NOT a terrorist. After all, he was a white Christian, and that just does not meet the American definition of terrorist. Nope, he was just an ordinary guy who was angry at the government and decided to murder innocent civilians without provocation. Now what was that definition of terrorism again? I guess it should be amended, because as far as I can see, the ONLY thing distinguishing McVeigh from those labeled as terrorists by our government is his status as a white (Christian) man. If you look at the record, arent white so-called Christian men

the enemy. And collectively, white folks are the enemy of freedom terrorists??? I think the answer to THAT question is abundantly

Where are our men?

How are the Children?

The Book of ABE 5:149 (Bryan) By Alphonso McGriff III When all is said and done, the final question will always be How Are the Children? What is your contribution? If the Children are not evolving and making progress, we have failed at life. So . . . How Are the Children?

Some believe we should fight for freedom, civil rights, human rights, equal rights, land, natural resources, power, money, positions, titles, and prestige. After were finished fighting for this stuff, How Are the Children? People believe we can get to the moon, mars, Saturn, black holes, stars, and other planets and celestial entities. When we finally get there, How Are the Children? People are trying to get to church, college, Heaven, the mall, the movies, award shows, the club, the game, the glory, and the life of wonderment and grandeur. Once we get there, How Are the Children? After everyone has been awarded and rewarded, How Are the Children? People die everyday because of religious beliefs, out of control emotions, and the desire to control others. How is it working for us? How is it working for the Children? How are the Children? Some of us are in love, done with love, looking for love, and spreading love. Where is the love for the Children? At the end of each second, each minute, each hour, and each day, if the Children are fucked up, so are weand everything we claim to believe in. We will not live forever. The state of the Children will always determine the state of the future. What is the future looking like?

Position on the War on Drugs

By Kevin Muhammad As the President of the CAAEC (CT African American

Emancipation Challenge) I have a strong position on this socalled War on Drugs, which I believe is really a War on Black, Brown and poor people. 70% of all incarceration is drug related, and less money to fund them. If we eradicated the drug problem gang violence over drug territory would still have their sons to love, nurture, send to school and produce grandchildren for them. Children would have their fathers and homes will be restored.

so if we eradicated the drug problem we would need less prisons all of these mothers who are losing their sons to street violence or

This so-called War is benefitting corrupt multi-national

corporations like Wells Fargo who laundered billions of money doing time in prison, while yet adding to the addiction cycle

from drug sales while people lost their lives physically and others plaguing this country. Corrupt judges imprisoning the innocent, corrupt district attorneys and law enforcement who disregard Black people and imprison them while suburban whites go to programs and evade jail time.

Who is going to jail? It is the Black and the Brown who sell and use sometimes less than their white counterparts. The law is to the core. disproportionately applied and America's Justice system is Racist

I am taking a personal stance and I will defend it in days, weeks and months to come. I am strongly for THE LEGALIZATION OF DRUGS BUT ONLY WITH REPARATIONS AND INDEMNIFICATION. This would stop the Black market value, regulate the drug market, stop the violence in the black community, while providing the money for jobs (black men are angry because they have no means of support to take care of a family with a felon/criminal record) and education.

Do you know 7200 kids drop out of school in America every

day???? In most communities the schools are funded by our taxes. Those who are homeowners are usually heavily tapped by their local/municipal government to pay taxes to support schools in their communities. However, there still remains a shortage of

Statistics in 2007 say that kids reported that heroin, cocaine and hallucinogens are easier to obtain now than in the 70's and the 80's. There are actually more drugs available. By Barbara Fair, Founder, My Brothers Keeper Americas longest war turned 41 on June 17, 2012. It is a war waged predominately in communities of color. On Friday, June 15, 2012 the CT African American Emancipation Challenge representing Bridgeport, New Haven, Hartford and Waterbury gathered outside the federal courthouse in New Haven with a passionate call for its end. Kevin Muhammad, CAAEC chair stated he would rather see the millions being spent to wage this war diverted to funding resources that uplift our communities. In 1969, then president Richard Nixon decided that drug abuse was Americas public enemy #1. Two years later on June 17, 1971 he declared a war on drugs sending a 5300 word message to Congress to consolidate at the highest level a full scale attack

It is interesting to read the response of those two facilities

administrators to news a public hearing is going to take place. If we look at the response historically there should be no surprise at what is now occurring, as the public hearing approaches. There are people who deny that there is any substance in what

The Hart Monitor Issue 5 July 2012

on the problem. Since 1971 it has been a war with no exit strategy and trillions being dedicated to it each year. It is a war that has made America the highest incarcerator of its citizens. Since this war was waged we have been arresting over 1.5 million people every year, 75% for marijuana possession. Over 700,000 are being recycled in and out of prison on an annual basis and drugs are cheaper, more available and more potent than when the war began. Drug arrests lead to barriers in housing, employment, higher education, loss of parental rights, voting rights and basic social services. Although Nixon initiated this war the toughest drug policy came from the Clinton administration and corporations like ALEC (American Legislative Exchange Council) pushed for aggressive public safety policies such as mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines, changes in bail industry and three strike policies. Funders to ALEC include Correctional Corporations of America established in the 1980s, the leader in privatization of prisons and building correctional partnerships with the states and feds. The war on drugs has become one of the greatest yet least challenged civil rights issues of the 21st Century. When research indicates that this war has been fought most aggressively in African American communities one has to ask the question Have Jim Crow Laws morphed into the war on drugs? The war on drugs was ushered into existence in the 70s, a decade after the civil rights gains of the 60s when opportunities for African Americans were at an all-time high. Human Rights watch research indicates that Americas drug policy has intentional consequences, is selective in its enforcement, prosecution and its decision making around who goes to prison and who goes into a program. Community activist, Shelton Tucker stated that this group is not asking that those committing crime and violence are allowed to continue doing so. What we seek is equity in how the laws are applied. Whether one goes to prison for drug crime should not be determined by skin color or socioeconomic status. LEAP (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition) has been calling for ending the drug war for well over a decade stating that Americas war on drugs is arguably the most destructive social policy since slavery. As we approach the 41 year of this war this reader asks, Are our streets any safer now that recent drug raids have removed over 100 people from the New Haven community?
