Underground Cable Laying Works Set to Commence

Following the preliminary installation of duct banks at selected locations along the cable route, ElectraNet is set to commence laying the new underground electricity transmission cable. The Adelaide Central Reinforcement program is a major expansion of the electricity supply to the Adelaide CBD to ensure continued security and reliability of supply and facilitate the long-term growth and development of Adelaide and the South Australian economy. This development represents an investment of nearly $200M and is part of ElectraNets $1billion five year expansion plans for South Australia. This major infrastructure development includes the establishment of a new substation at Keswick Terminal which will be supplied with high voltage electricity from Torrens Island via a new underground transmission line and connected to ElectraNets communications network via a new underground fibre optic cable.

ElectraNet has commenced construction works for the new substation at Keswick Terminal. This substation will transform high voltage electricity coming from the transmission network at Torrens Island

into low voltage electricity able to be distributed to homes and businesses by ETSA Utilities. The visual design of the substation will complement the style of the surrounding area including future commercial developments and current buildings while adopting urban design and landscape architecture principles to reflect the desired character for the local area. The site will also be screened and landscaped with suitable native plant species to enhance the appearance of the substation. ElectraNet is conscious of the need to maintain access along

Railway Terrace and to businesses within the local area. A comprehensive traffic management plan has been prepared to keep traffic and parking disruption to a minimum during construction.

Communications Fibre Optic Cable

The new underground communications fibre optic cable installation along the road reserve of Greenhill Road and Hutt Street has been completed. The fibre optic cable will connect the new substation at Keswick Terminal to ElectraNets East Terrace substation. Directional boring and other techniques were used to minimise disruption to the community and to avoid damage to tree roots and other existing infrastructure.

Community Engagement
Lesley and Matt, our dedicated Community Liaison Coordinators, have been actively engaging with members of the community and businesses along the construction route. As part of this engagement process, benefits have been gained from feedback received from key stakeholders and the community, allowing ElectraNet to reinforce our efforts to minimise impacts such as noise and traffic disruption wherever possible.

Community Benefits Program

ElectraNet proudly supports local community initiatives such as the Grey Mangrove Revegetation on the causeway leading to Torrens Island, an initiative of the Australian Marine Wildlife Research and Rescue Organisation. The project aims to increase the sustainability of intertidal habitat for the Grey Mangrove which spreads in a corridor from the Port River up to Port Wakefield. Since European settlement, pollution and fragmentation have become threats to this habitat.

This program, in partnership with the Australian Marine Wildlife Research and Rescue Organisation (previously Project Dolphin Safe), will also generate educational material and community awareness on the impact of activities such as bait collection on the local marine ecology. Additionally, through ElectraNets sponsorship of the Australian String Quartet, an educational, workshop style performance is planned for October for music students, their parents and teachers from schools in the Western suburbs. Interested schools are encouraged to call 1800 890 376 for more information.

Thank You!
ElectraNet wishes to thank all residents, business owners and staff, commuters and key stakeholders along the cable route for your continued patience and support during construction works.

Underground Transmission Line

Installation of the underground transmission cable using the direct lay construction method is set to commence in September 2010 on Grand Trunkway and in the following months along some sections of Port Road as outlined in the map above. Preliminary excavation to install duct banks on Port Road and selected road crossings will continue as required in preparation for the final cable installation. Where the direct lay method is used, the trench is excavated and the cable laid directly in the trench before it is reinstated. With the duct bank method, conduits are placed in trenches which are then reinstated before the cable is pulled through the conduits at a later stage. Most of the works to date have been completed using the duct bank method. To ensure public safety, extended speed limit restrictions and lane closures will be in place around all construction sites and in some instances car parking may also be affected. ElectraNet is working closely with the Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure, local councils and the community to minimise traffic disruptions wherever possible.
